Two centuries ago, on the site of what is now the Fort George Brewery block, fur magnate John Jacob Astor’s expedition boldly built a trading post they called Astoria—the first US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Today, we’re proud to craft the Official Bicentennial Beer of Astoria. Many West Coast brewers in the 19th century had no ice, so they improvised an effervescent beer by brewing lager yeasts at higher-than-normal temperatures. Described as a “refreshing drink, much consumed by the laboring classes,” it’s the inspiration for 1811 lager.

More flavorful than most modern lagers, and fermented at warmer temperatures, 1811 is lovingly concocted from 2 row malted barley and cracked maize; corn was a popular beer ingredient in pre-Prohibition days. 1811’s hop character gives it a distinctive Northwest style worthy of Astoria’s 200-year history.

Bottle. The pour was a hazy medium orange with a large white rocky head that had good retention, reducing slowly down to a large cap with some fair streaky lacing. The aroma of a light straw malt, floral and grass hops and a mild soapy yeast with notes of caramel, corn and citrus (grapefruit). The taste was bitter from the word go with a mild caramel sweetness and finished rather hoppy with a slight citrus peel presence towards the end. The flavor lasted a nice long time after the swallow with the hoppy bitterness left lingering on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was a few shades beyond light in body with a light dry texture and a medium carbonation. Overall a nice hoppy Lager with a smooth refreshing feel...

Draught at Oddfellows, 11/3/15.
Clear, with just a touch of glassiness. Pale blonde with some light wax tints and a moderate amount of white head with average retention.
Minerals, light herbal notes (chamomile, white pepper) from the hops and a very present corn-honey note from the malt. No alcohol or flaw.
A bit sweeter and lightly fruity, with some dry, baked bread notes from the malt, a touch of sweet corn and light vanilla. Sounds worse than it actually is, and I love corn in my beer, but I’ve had far better Pre-Pro lagers. Just needs a little more crispness on the finish, some more dryness overall and probably a better hop aroma. Moderate carbonation, watery texture, no alcohol or flaws.

Draft pour at malt and vine. Pours a golden color with a big foam head. Really nice hop fronted aroma to this. Really criso, refreshing flavor with hops and a touch of spice. Finishes a little on the dry side. Overall a good lager. Enjoyed this.

On tap at Fort George, pours access pale golden with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of corn. Flavour is smooth, with notes of corn, grass and a decent hop kick at the end. Decent lager, but nothing I’d ever drink.
