A tractor-trailer sped 2400 miles through the night to deliver American Oak barrels to the Fort George Brewery, staves still engorged with Kentucky Bourbon. Seventy-two hours after being emptied at the distillery these barrels were harboring a winter wonder, working their alchemy on the hop and barley elixir nestled within. With the addition of more hops as the beer left the barrels, North VII was born – fully aromatic and pungent with vanilla, bourbon, oak and flowery lupulin magic.

Poured from a bottle that I forgot about in my desk at work for far too long. Aroma is malty with some light alcohol spice. Moderate notes of caramel, with lighter notes of toasted bread and toffee. Some medium light bourbon notes with light oak. Moderately strong hop notes of grapefruit and pine. Some light phenolic notes. Pours a rather murky, copper-brown with a large, thick, tan head that exhibits very good retention. Moderately high lacing and medium small legs. Flavor is slightly sweet upfront and gets sweeter in the finish. Moderate notes of toasted bread and caramel with lighter notes of honey. Some light bourbon and oak notes. Medium high bitterness with some more bourbon and alcohol spice in the finish. Some light phenolics with some esters of pear, stone fruit and banana. Medium hop notes of grapefruit and pine resin. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, this tastes more like a small, American barley wine rather than an IPA. The malt presence is rather strong and the bourbon barrel doesn’t work great with the Belgian IPA qualities. Definitely a weird mess of a beer.

Bottle - Jam and fruit rind, caramel and some orange. Hazy gold with a rich white head. Apricot, orange, woody notes and lots of sweetness. Light bitterness which is balance with the sweetness and a touch of booze burn in the finish.

Hazy orange with a white head. Slightly oxidized malty aroma. Strangely muddled semi citrus taste. Bartender called it mystery beer, and I concur.

On tap at the brewpub in Astoria, OR. Aroma: malty, citrusy, and slightly skunky, with hints of banana, orange, and caramel. Taste/Palate: sweet and creamy; finishes slightly bitter. This may be the most interesting beer I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

Poured from the tap at the Brewery in Astoria. Aroma is fruity, orange like in scent. First flavor is very "wine-like" to me. Has hints of butter, cream and caramelized banana. Definitely has a Belgium after taste to it, but not your typical Belgium skunk...more like a pleasant sweet skunk.

UPDATED: NOV 28, 2014 25/X/14 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle from a trade @ The Autumn Gathering formerly known as RBBAG Mons (Gent) - BB: n/a, but pretty fresh, straight from the States! (2014-1266) Thanks to bigmanlavos for the trade!

Clear orange beer, big irregular yellowish head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very fruity, grapefruit, pineapple, sweet, grassy, passion fruits. MF: ok carbon, full body. Taste: bitter, some orange peel, citrus, very resinous, piny notes. Aftertaste: citrus, fruity, pineapple, bit malty, grapefruit, bitter, sweet, some orange peel, caramel. Probably one of the best B.A. ipa’s I’ve ever had (even if that’s not really a lot).
