Inspired by the tried and true Vortex IPA, but bigger, hoppier and just as balanced as the Vortex that Fort George drinkers have been keen to since the brewery was almost scattered in a corn field. The brewers at Fort George were making A LOT of Vortex, but just felt like it needed more umph. After a rather strong early batch of Vortex in the pub, the regulars agreed, but this was not for the full pint. This beer is not for everyone, but surely hoppy and big enough for many in the Pacific Northwest. Heavily hopped with Summit and Cascade hops.

Bottle shared at a tasting, 10/6/14. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a thin frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of candied citrus, citrus, mild tropical hop notes, mild caramel malt. The taste is bitter tropical, resin hops, caramel malt. Medium bodied, moderate lingering bitterness.

On tap at Saraveza’s 4th IIPA fest, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of brings out loads of cat piss, citrus hops, and some dank herbal hops. Flavour is very pungent, with loads of bitter pine, a touch of citrus, some earthy notes and more piney hops. Just enough malt to round things out. Finishes very bitter and piney hoppy. An excellent IIPA.

Bomber from Belmont. Pours a dark copper color with a medium white head. A massive resin bomb nose. The flavor is big over the top resinous hops, pine, dank hop oils, big malty backbone, a bit like a barley wine but clearly a IIIP in many ways. Hell, this is good. The sweetness and green hop bite isn’t for everyone (Mike J!), but despite intensity, this is drinkable. The bitterness in these IIIPAs is odd, somehow intense but also I would not describe this beer as bitter.

Bottle:   Very sweet pithy start, piney, hoppy, moderate to full malt background.   Dark orange in color, a little dirty, frothy sandy head with spotty lacing.   Feels a little sweaty because of the strong sweet pithy bits.   Pretty strong pith and peel on the backside.   Moderate sweetness, fairly chewy.   Wished it were a bit more subtle, but this one is big on pith and peel, no so much on the orange bits or even the floral aspects.   Decent, but hard to finish an entire bomber.   Thankfully I had help!

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Amber pour with a small head. Very malty aroma. Fat and sweet. Bread, caramel. Candied fruit and marmalade .Taste is similar. Toasted grain, caramel. A bit of lemon and grassy bitterness on the finish breaks things up a bit. Full bodied, soft carb.

Good deal of caramel and pale malt, a little danky and fruity, some residual sugar notes. Leaning definitely towards the malt side. Pours amber orange, white head. Caramel, pale malt, some residual sugar, piney and fruity hop notes, moderate presence within all the malt forwards notes. Some peppery alcohol in the finish. Sweet, some lingering residual sugar. Too much malt for my liking.

Poured fresh from a mason jar that was filled at their brewpub... Poured a deep red, rose color with a khaki head that left nice lacing. Lots of hops, citrus, dirt-like, berry fruits, tangy sweetness. Quite boozy, with hints of barley as a balance.

Bottle. Pours a mostly clear amber color with a moderate off-white head on there. Nose is definitely hoppy, but seems more earthy and grassy than anything else. Taste is slightly bitter, but has a residual sweetness on the finish. Also ends up being a bit earthy for me here, too. OK, but not great for me.
