India pale ale’s were designed to withstand the long voyage to India. Today, it seems one has to design the IPA strong and hoppy enough to make the trip back as well. Vortex IPA is the Fort George’s first foray into this strong beer category. Our IPA is made with generous additions of cascade, Simcoe and Palisade hops throughout the brewing, fermentation and conditioning phases, balanced with heaps of organic pale malt. We designed this to not rip your taste buds off your tongue, but rather vigorously stimulate them and your palate into a lupulin-ecstacy of pleasure. During the cross-country truck trip our brewery made to find it’s home in Astoria, it was nearly scattered to the cornfields of Nebraska by a tornado. We try to capture some of nature’s intensity in every pint. IBU 97

Canned 17 July 2014. Pouring a clear amber with a dense, off white head with excellent retention and minimal lacing, this looks solid. The nose is great. Bright, pungent and dank hops with grapefruit, grapefruit pith, pine, weed, a little chalk and a little grass. A little caramel is present. The palate opens with a moderate bitterness, plenty dank with a pronounced weed character. A little grassy, which distracts from the wonderful bitterness and moderate hop flavor that’s comprised of grapefruit, pine and a little melon. The mid palate is smooth and creamy with a little sweetness before a long, clean ,bitter finish with flavors of grapefruit and west take over. A little candied melon is present as well. Medium light in body with moderate carbonation, this tastes solid. Definitely worthy, a great NW IPA.

16 oz can (excellent) picked up at The Bier Stein. Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Got a few floaties in there. Aromas of mango, orange, maybe a touch of onion. Mostly bitter flavor. Maybe a bit undercarbed. Get orange rind, more citrus bitterness. Decent, middle of road ipa.

Lightly hazy amber color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, pine, grapefruit, light toast, some caramel. Taste of citrus, caramel, tropical fruits, grass, pine resin, and grapefruit finish.

Pours golden with a gorgeous orange hue and decent hop sediment. Aroma brings juicy oranges and some light sweet malts. Flavor brings drier orange citrus with some nice bitter dry zest on the backend.

Very frothy thick white head. Dark golden hue, lots of bubbles on tap. Smells like bananas and grapefruit. Bitter all the way through. Delicious

This hop bomb ripped my tongue apart! Not a lot to say about this except hoppy and bitter, the aroma and flavor a bit overpowering.

This homebrew.poured a light orange with a white head. Aroma was of orange, grass and caramel. Flavor similar, more old school ipa, but not horrible.

Call this a tick if you will, but by gawd, if you do I will summon demons from Texas. My daughter brought me this and what do I recall best about it? I liked it. I love my kids, all of them. But liking this beer meant something to me. I hope you get that opportunity some day, if it has not yet transpired.

473ml can from Bottleworks, Seattle, WA

Bottled 05/08/14 - Pours dark orange with a smooth head. Aroma of fresh grassy hops, pine, resinous notes, caramely malts and fruits. Taste is malty, grassy, hoppy and sweet with loads of pine, resinous notes and caramel. Finish is resinous, piney and hoppy with lingering bitterness and maltiness. Nice one.
