Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 2000. Cask, handpump dispense. Crystal clear pale amber in colour with a thin white head. Fragrant floral aromas present but short in intensity. Thin resiny mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a strong juicy, fruity peach and lychees flavour full in the mouth. Floral dusty hops compliment the malt well and give a short bitter bite to the aromatic aftertaste. Finish has a slightly sweet edge with a hint of golden syrup in there. An excellent summer session ale.

500ml bottle from Fabeers, York. I’m guessing this was pasteurised, but I can’t be 100% certain. Not sure that its made any more and this was a couple of months past its best before date, but I picked it up anyway in case I can’t get it again. Deep red/brown colour with scant head. Cardboard and caramel malt aroma. Very heavy toffee flavour, with more caramel and hints of treacle. Dry malty finish but not a lot of bitterness. Definitely 80/- in style. Didn’t really go a bundle on it, but I’m not a great fan of the style anyway, so I haven’t marked it down too much.

A brown beer with a small beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and hops. The flavor is of roasted bread, hops, and burnt caramel, leading to a dry roasted end.

Cask Conditioned at The Hobgoblin, Oxford. Amber coloured beer, bubbly head. Caramel malts with an orangey undertone. A little thin on the tongue and slightly sweet.

Bottled. Amber with a reddish tinge, stable white head. Roasted malt aroma, amidst good servings of honey and maple syrup. The sweetness transfers to the flavour and stops abruptly on the palate.

Forth Brewery was founded by partners in the Maclay Brewery which stopped brewing in 1999 passing production to Belhaven. Output and range are still limited at the moment, but if this Puffer Ale is an example of what is to come they should do well. This is a good example of an 80/- Ale: rust, blood, pregnant fruit and toffee apples. This was the bottled version and, though fresh up front, did have a metallic, stewed hops finish.

Deep ruby. No head. Fruity and somewhat chocolatey. Medium bodied, sweet. Clean finish with low bitterness.
