KOMES POCZWÓRNY is an extraordinary beer created in order to commemorate 125 years of the Fortuna Brewery’s operations. This is a genuine speciality: a strong beer with a wonderful amber hue, dry-hopped with a mixture of several hop varieties. It is brewed with the addition of malt roasted at Browar Fortuna, in compliance with more than 100 years of the brewery’s craft tradition. The drink’s bouquet and flavour will change over time, owing to the natural, time-consuming fermentation taking place in the bottle. It will win any beer

Bottle. A solvent-, glue-ridden disaster. Dry, excessively alcoholic, with an otherwise soapy, caramelly profile. Down the drain it went.

It’s dark amber/bright copper color beer. A little bit hazy, with practically no head. In aroma it’s quite sweet. It has delicate apricot and peach notes, which are put in the middle of champagne aroma. It’s very highly carbonated, pinching inside your mouth. Taste is a bit similar to aroma, but it’s much more covered by malts. Leaves not very pleasant alcoholic feeling in the mouth and sweet aftertaste.

500ml bottle. Clear dark amber color. Massive bubbly head, stays. Caramel, candy, yeast in aroma. Strong and offensive alcohol, nutty, late roast and some acidity in taste. Quite high carbonation. Acidic mouthfeel. Paper in aftertaste. Do not want it again.

500ml bottle (24 hour beer shop, Krakow)
Rather pleasant strong belgian ale aroma. Rich sweet malts, a little dusty. RIch amber, large doughy head. Fairly yeasty homebrewy taste. Sour maltiness. Harsh. Amazingly thin palate, not too sugary considering the strength, and not boozy either. But this is shivers-down-the-spine rough. Like some fellow students’ homebrews. Dirty and rough. Not good. Alcohol fairly well hidden. Maybe that’s the curry we just had that has anaesthetised my tastebugs. Rough dirty yeasty papery finish. I say yeasty, but this was poured completely clear.

11M before best before date. Dark amber, head quickly transforms into ring. Alcohol in the foreground, malts, herbs and medium bitterness in the background. No counterweight for high alcohol volume. Low CO2 level. Low drinkability, but it is probably no surprise for quadrupel. Good alternative to wine, though.

Bottled@Tuulensuu, Tampere. Amber colour, small white head. Aroma is caramel, fruits, stinging alcohol as well as some mild herbal notes. Flavour is very similar, but the alcohol punches through even stronger.

This ambitious Polish beer fails an essential benchmark: drinkability. The beer looks great: nice dark brown colour, hazy with a big, frothy head. The aroma is quite good with nice Belgian yeast, some fruits and maltiness. But the taste: it starts off quite well with fruitiness and fairly strong maltiness, but then something horrible happens and the aftertaste is murder in the mouth. Sour, foul, metallic and poisonous. I contemplated flushing this down the drain, but the good elements in it made it possible to somehow finish it, albeit very slowly. Again, an ambitious idea to try and make a Quadrupel, but this isn’t really much more than a joke if considered a representative of that challenging genre.

Huge, retreating cream-amberish head over copper beer with verdigris sheen. Caramel & green herbs, ’beery’ nose, spruce & bit soapy aroma. Again something piney/spruce/resin-y in the mouth. Rather dry-bitterish, green leaves, precious little maltbacking; As said, surprisingly light MF for a 10% ABV beer. Feels well-carbonated, spritzy even. Since the "style" is nonsense anyway, IMHO, why not this one too? Whatever you call it, this beer is too thin, too much lacking in malt for its profile. Dziękuję, Aga!
