Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Tasting courtesy of dschiller. Pours a lovely dark amber with zero head. Aromas are massive hops, bourbon and just a dash of vanilla and caramel. Flavors are hops, then heat, then barrel notes and the finish is bitter hops mixed with just a touch of vanilla. Palate is perfect, heavy and clinging to the tongue. Overall, this is one of the better BA American Barley wines I have tasted.

Poured into a pint glass. 5.0 A: Nearly clear dark orange color. Two and a half fingers of beige, frothy creamy head. Retention is insanely good for a beer this big and lacing covers the whole glass. Really impressed here. 4.0 S: Quite fruity with a lot of citrusy hops. Tangy fruitiness is what I’d call it as it meshes with the caramel and toffee backbone. Toasted malts with some strength. The hops also give a lot of floral aroma and perhaps a touch of herbalness as well. Peach, plum, and apple fruits from the malts. Booze is exceptionally well hidden as I can’t smell any of it. It’s good, but really isn’t all that special. Solid hoppy BW nose. 3.5 T: Taste is good too, but it’s surprisingly simple for a beer this big. A lot less citrus than in the nose with a lot more of the peach, plum, melon, and apple components. Lots of sweet neutral maltiness with lots of caramel and toffee. Again a heavy toastiness, which I like. Mild to moderate bitterness from the hops along with floral and herbal notes. Booze is much more noticeable in the taste, but it still doesn’t seem like 15%. 3.5 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Slightly chewy. Not a lot of creaminess. Light warming on finish. Not bad. 3.5 D: It’s decent, but I probably wouldn’t trade for it again as there are much better options out there. Serving type: bottle 12-15-2012 04:24:40

Tap @ Mikkeller Bar, Viktoriagade. Pours completely clear red with a love, staying, frothy, off-white head. Aroma has chewy caramel malts, strawberry, light toasted, mild vinious, citrus, a light pepper touch. Medium to low carbonation, wonderful creamy and fat mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet, lots of caramel, blackberries, strawberry, vinious, warming. Had they obtained this flavour at 11% it would have been magnificent. Now it is ’just’ very good.

17-MAY-2013, draft @Mikkeller Bar with Ulkløbben. #100 Barley Wine. Clear amber with lasting, lacing, almost white head. Aroma is bread, fruit, dried fruit, sugar. Taste the same. Some alcohol in the taste that I do not get in the aroma. Full body, very very sweet, medium carbonation. Very fine barley wine.

Bottle:   Deep amber, orangish, moderate haze, thin sudsy white head, spotty lacing.   Big citrusy nose, soft alcohol, slight perfume.   Has a slight candied banana aspect to it.   Otherwise, says there is Bourbon and Maple Syrup... but not for this kid.   It does feel sweet and syrupy, but Bourbon and Maple syrup?   Really?   This guy gets alcohol, sweet biscuit, strong pale breadiness, with a strong pale fruitiness that borders on cloying.   I wanted this one because I heard it was the tits.   But, like most beers, most people are retarded as to what the hell is good.   Don’t get me wrong, its not a bad beer, but its far from finished.   Body and mouthfeel are fairly full bodied.   Seems a cross between American (Hoppy) and English (Malty).   It seems like a strong Blonde Barleywine or strong Golden.   Yeah, not overly hoppy nor overly malty.   This is a perfect example of what I would say is a strong Golden Ale.   Yeah, its probably just me... who the f*ck cares.   No more can they keep us in, Listen, damn it, we will win.   They see it right, they see it well, but they think this saves us from our hell.   SUCK IT TREBEK!.   Thanks to pailhead for the pleasure.

Pffttt... how is that people only write one or two sentences about this beer.   Seriously?   I am choking on this beer right now.... SAVE ME JEBUS!   Only superheros can finish an entire 750ml by themselves.
