Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Bottle to glass. Pours a beautiful deep amber light mahogany color with an off-white head. Aroma is full of complex malts, sweet, and alcoholic. Flavor is sweet, heavy, malty, caramel, alcohol. Thick and oily. Lingering alcoholic malty sweetness. Fantastic.

Barcade, Brooklyn tap ($8): Pours murky brown with a beige head. Aroma is a lot of hops, loads of maltiness, whiskey, wood, and a hell of a lot of sugar. Taste is slightly boozy (not nearly as much as some other reviewers are claiming). It is also rather hoppy and bitter. Plenty of malt backbone to wash it down. This is an extremely aggressive beer. Not for the faint of heart. A good way to start my Founders tap takeover.

Alright, let’s see what’s going on here. Pours a fiery orange with loose soapy light tan foam scattered over a brilliantly clarified beer. Cherry, alcohol, burning alcohol, sugar, light crystal malts, some pithy hops. Not an impressive nose whatsoever. Flavor is simply sweet. Booze, malt, sugar, brown sugar, absolutely overly boozy. Medium bodied with low carb and a wet finish that actually makes me feel like I just took a shot of cheap liquor, probably one of the least desirable mouthfeels I’ve had in quite some time. I tried, but this became a drainpour for me.

On tap. Murky amber color. Sweet grain flavor with a lemon candy finish. Deceptively strong and very smooth. A complex barley wine for slow sipping.

Lite amber color, tast of tobacco and a lil bit of lite chocolate. Has a little bit of hops to it. A good American barley wine. Just not my particular style.

Tap at Alehouse. Pours mahogany with a creamy beige head. Aroma of dark bread, caramel, raisin, dark fruits. Taste is complex, with leather, dark fruit, caramel, earth, mineral at the finish. Alcohol is quite present as expected, but not harsh. There’s some resin bitterness left in the mouth at the swallow. A nice sipper.

Bottled via the grace of friends. Dark redish amber not much head. Nectar of the gods. All the tastes that are claimed bourbon, maple, malt. Complex yet simple. If you have the opportunity do not pass it up.
