Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Lite amber color, tast of tobacco and a lil bit of lite chocolate. Has a little bit of hops to it. A good American barley wine. Just not my particular style.

Tap at Alehouse. Pours mahogany with a creamy beige head. Aroma of dark bread, caramel, raisin, dark fruits. Taste is complex, with leather, dark fruit, caramel, earth, mineral at the finish. Alcohol is quite present as expected, but not harsh. Thereís some resin bitterness left in the mouth at the swallow. A nice sipper.

Bottled via the grace of friends. Dark redish amber not much head. Nectar of the gods. All the tastes that are claimed bourbon, maple, malt. Complex yet simple. If you have the opportunity do not pass it up.

Bottle 75 cl. Pours a clear, woderful warm amber with an off-white head. Oxidized caramel aroma combined with quite some alcohol heat. Not really heavy in body, not overly sweet either. Caramel notes and I believe I can sense some maple too, but not that strong in wood character. An enjoyable sipper, but the boozy burn is a bit much making it a difficult beer to drink. 281013

P: Pours a beautiful clear ruby red copper body with a bubbly off white head that fizzles to wet bubbly lacing. S: Rich roasted caramel malt, loads of barley, peppermint candy, caramelized sugar, and astringent booze becomes full force once warm. T/M: Rich roasted malts and spicy barley continue in the flavor. Spicy bourbon booze that covers the palate with apple peel in the dry finish. Once warmed the sweet maltiness fades to the upstaging spicy barley and heavy booze profile. The finish is much dryer and leaves a resinous pine film behind with butterscotch and faint coffee on the end. Full sticky body with moderate carbonation. O: Wow this is big time. Booze, spice, barley and great sweet melts. Complexity that changes with different temps and becomes a powerhouse once warmed. Even though the booze erupts in the warmth itís still smooth and refined.

2012 bottle, Brandonís house, split 4 ways. Thanks, Ryan. Rich golden brown pour, heavy toffee and caramel sweetness. Some hop character. Really rich. Best-hidden 15% Iíve ever had, and it was really good, but it just didnít stand out for me.

On tap from the 2012 release in 2013. I love the additional hops above and beyond the style in this beer. The Local

Tasting this one over a year after bottling. Amazing. Smooth, not hot and sweet, just like a barley wine should be.

Well, quite a work of art. Oaky, like whisky, vanilla, caramel, lavender and marmalade. The high alcohol produces a wonderful burning spicy effect on the nose. Wheaty and malty, but with a high-intensity hop burn on the palate. Bread pudding. Apricots en flambť. Long-lasting and memorable, but light and nimble on the palate. Such a big beer but so light on its feet.

To my surprise, I saw this at the World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth, Michigan and decided to try it out. I hope youíre all ready to roll your eyes at this review and spit on your screen! Appearance: A nice ruby-like color. No head to speak of, and no lacing either .... which I guess is to be expected. Smell: Honestly smelled like a chlorine pool to me, for the most part ... after awhile that note seemed to fade and I just got a really odd mix of super sweet malt with hops. Unusual. Taste: Itís a barleywine. Itís 15%. In the words of Ralph Wiggum, "It tastes like burning." The beer isnít overly bitter, but it burns quite a lot with a lot of alcohol in the flavor. I found that I was mainly concentrating on getting all of it down, rather than trying to pick up on flavors. I could finish my 4oz sample, but Iím not convinced I could have much more. Itís too big for me. Sweet, heavy, and copious amounts of alcohol in the flavor. Could definitely benefit by mellowing out over the course of a year or so.
