Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Pours a clear orange into snifter with a one finger head that quickly fades, the aroma is very citrusy and fruity there is just so much going on. The taste is hoppy up front with grapefruit and orange citrus followed by malt sweetness some caramel and vanilla, there is a slight burn on the way down but wow the alcohol is well hidden i cannot tell this is a 15% abv beer at all. To sum it up I am very impressed. This is one to try and seek out, very limited and expensive but i think it was worth it!

Pours a dark golden brown with fluffy head. Aromas of dark malts, hops, and light bourbon. Flavors of sweet malts, hops, and nice bourbon notes.

750 ml bottle thanks to Adrien and his deep cellar. Very nice deep ruby color, still normal carbonation. Aroma shows a good amount of pine, light floral hints, dark fruit without any oxidation.

The flavor is still bold. Toffee, pine and floral hops in the center still showing some bitterness. Also shows a light metallic hint after the swallow. Body is full with a very sticky texture. Also still has a lot of warming alcohol. I still like this pretty much although it must be a 6 or 7 oz. sample.

Bottle. This is a sweet barleywine. Moderstely well hopped , malt, sweet caramel. Some butter, but not in a way that it appears to be a flaw. I get a little cedar. Sweet finish with hops.

Pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with tangerine hues and a two finger frothy off-wife head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting cap. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Sweet, slightly leathery malt aroma with a complex hop profile balancing out the boozy sweetness. Citrus/tropical notes of pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit followed by resinous pine, grass, leathery malt, caramel, toffee and biscuit. There’s a touch of alcohol in the nose but more subtle than expected. Full chewy body with a huge blast of bitter, earthy hops that linger over the sweet and earthy/leathery malts. Dank, bitter and resinous with an earthy/grassy hop bite followed by sweet caramel malt backbone and subtle heat. Sticky pine needle flavor along with grapefruit and orange peel sweetness countered by caramel malt and toffee toward the finish. Really well balanced and smooth with the high abv excellently masked. Would never have guessed that it was 15%. Another solid entry in the backstage series but not worth the exorbitant price.

April 30, 2015. Bottle, vintage 2012, shared by madmitch76, thanks!
Hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma is sweet caramel, dark sugar, figs, notes of bourbon alcohol, vanilla and citrus. Taste is sweet, sticky caramel, toffee dried fruits and medium bitter with citrus pith notes. Sweet sticky finish with hints of warming alcohol. Medium bodied, sticky texture, soft carbonation.

Bottle: Poured a clear light copper color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of residual sugar notes with light toffee and caramel notes is very nice. Taste is also dominated by residual sugar notes, with some light toffee notes and light caramel notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and light warming alcohol. I was expecting sugar bomb but while this is still a sweet beer I thought it had enough attenuation for the style.

A masterfully made barleywine - for such a high abv value its a very easy drinker indeed, and the cellared bottle I enjoyed had loads of bourbon flavor and a decent amount of sweet smokiness. Cant specifically taste any maple underneath all the other great stuff, though who could really expect to? Yummy late night dessert treat!

Tap. Hazy red brown pour with a small white head. Red berries, oak, hop, spice, maple syrup. Full body. Oaky and syrupy but with fruits. Nice
