Aroma is lots of black coffee with some sweet chocolate in there. Dark tan head and a bit syrupy, but delicious. The sweet maple is great with the bourbon and the coffee blends perfectly with the chocolate. And age has treated it well. Try it if you can.

Dsg tasting at Chris’s. Dark black fleeting tan head. Aroma is liquorice treacle and higher alcohol. Flavour is sweet treacle maple light roast. Too big and sweet.

10/31/11 Poured a viscous black with a tiny tan head. Aroma mostly consists of chocolate, bourbon and coffee. Not much maple in the nose. Taste follows the nose. You can taste the barrel aging as the bourbon at times almost overpowers. Lots of chocolate and roasty malt flavor with a touch of vanilla and just a bit of maple syrup. Seems to have less maple presence than when it had it on tap at Founders. Mouthfeel is just a touch thin for the style although far from watery. Lowish carb levels. A fine beer, but it’s impossible to live up to the crazy hype train. I slightly preferred the KBS we opened along with this and FWIW, it was a 2-2 tie between KBS and CBS as best beer amongst our tasting party. [Edit] Cracked another bottle on 11/25. In this bottle the bourbon was much more subdued and more maple flavor was present much more similar to what I remember from having it on tap on release day. Incredibly smooth and one of the best beers I’ve ever had. I’m not sure if the first bottle was slightly off or if it really did just congeal and become awesome in just under a month. Went from a very good beer to a f’ing spectacular one. [Edit #2] Tons of bottle variation in this. Score is more or less an average, but the bottles I’ve got to try have ranged from around a 3.5 to a 5.

Catching up on some old ratings I need to put it. Wow. Incredible beer. Aged a year. I was worried that aging might mellow out the maple. No issue there. The smell was slight maple with some bourbon and coffee characteristics. Pour with thick midnight black with frothy khaki head. The taste was huge. Maple (of course), sweet and balanced. Chocolate, coffee, bourbon, toffee. Over the top but nice. Heavy mouthfeel, but easy to drink. One of the best imperial stouts (and beers, in general), I’ve been lucky enough to try.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2013 Bottle from Stfun, HUGE thanks! Poured dark with some chocolately head that lasted throughout. Aroma was bitter chocolate, coffee and slight bourbon. Flavor is sweet syrup and chocolate up front, coffee dominated late. The coffee has held up great. Minimal bourbon burn after the coffee taste goes away, really awesome beer. Absolutely fantastic.

Bottle from a trade with dmac. Pours very dark brown color with light brown head. Aromas of bourbon, roasted malts, maple syrup, chocolate and coffee. Bourbon and sweet maple syrup flavors up front with roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Full body with minimal carbonation. Huge thanks Dave!

Bottle, black pour almost flat. Aroma is weird, stale air, like a dense wet cave. Taste is completly different, lots of coffee. Cant find the bourbon or maple.

Reviewed 9-1-10. I had this one on tap 2-3 weeks ago over at Churchkey. At the time, I liked it, but still thought the KBS was better. However, after thinking about it and in retrospect, I was out with friends, spent most of my time and energy enjoying their company, and wasn’t able to give this brew my full attention. Fast forward a couple of weeks.... I was out beer shopping in downtown DC and came upon a great bookstore and tap house I had always heard great things about, but had never experienced - Kramerbooks. I went inside and the bartender handed me a draft menu and low and behold.... there it was! Ap: Very dark, pitch black even, with a great deal of carbonation for a beer this style. It poured with about an inch worth of head. This one’s a beauty! Ar: Maple and coffee (just like the name dictates), with hints of chocolate and caramel. It had a very candy-like sweetness, as apposed to a brown sugar-type one. T: Founders BS with maple sweetness. How to describe this best .... Hmmm...Caramelized, coffee and maple infused, dark chocolate cotton candy, melted into liquid form and slightly chilled. Simply amazing! P: Surprisingly creamy and smooth. Some of the coffee ground notes I found offensive in the BS are now muted, and the high grade maple prevails. O: This beer is pure "man candy." No need for syrup, I think I’ll just pour this over my waffle!
