On tap at Mike’s Bar and Grill during Cleveland Beer Week. Huge thanks to Founders for bringing some kegs of this this week. Just awesome. I have been searching for the perfect beer for years. I found it last night. The guy next to me said he had this last week in a bottle and tonight was his first time on tap. He said it was clearly better on tap. I have only had this once. On tap. Last night. So this review is based on what I enjoyed last evening. Pours pitch black with a slight tan ring around the edges. Looks like what I would expect. I put the glass up to my nose and whiff. Whoa. Layers of aromas. First I noticed a stickly sweet maple, then a touch of coffee, roast, and wood made a noticeable note here as well. I smelled this a few times because I was surprised by the complexity just in the aroma. I took a sip. My first thought was "Holy Fuck". An explosion of flavor hit me. Upfront their was a strong sense of coffee, followed very closely by a touch of maple sweetness, then a touch of dark roast from the grain bill and a slight note of vanilla with some booze notes that was not at all hot. The booze flavors were hid well by the way this was barrel aged and melded perfectly in the finished product. There really was no booze as there was just a note of it and it made for a perfectly rounded beer. The finish combined all of the above ever so slightly. There was no cloying sweetness. Nothing over the top. Everything in this beer was perfectly represented from start to finish. I honestly never thought I would give a perfect score to any beer. Until now. This one for me goes beyond the hype and was worth every sip.

Had at KBS release and again at DLD 2015 on guest taps. Pitch black with a thick, fluffy, tan head. Beautiful taste and palate. It’s light as air, which is amazing for a stout. Pour me more!

Smell is chocolate malt, booze, and bourbon. Taste is pretty much the same with some coffee/dark chocolate bitterness and some maple sweetness. Too boozy while cold, but warm, the other flavors really shine. Thick, full body with some slight foam.

Draft @ Dash-In. Boozy oaky bourbon, chocolate, and dark fruit aroma. Black brown with a small tan head. Big rich dark chocolate, oaky bourbon, dark roasty malt, vanilla, and dark fruit flavor. Full creamy body, moderate carbonation. I’ve been trying to get a taste of this one for almost 6 years, and it was a bit of a let down. It was very good, but definitely did not live up to all of the hype for me.

Growler at home with my wife, courtesy of PhillyCraft. Huge thanks man! Pour is deep brown, almost black with a small tan-colored head and good lacing. Deep roasted coffee beans, cocoa nibs, ripe earthiness, sweet maple syrup, light alcohol, woody notes, shaved coconut, and caramel in the aroma. Awesome! Taste is earthy coffee, toasted malt, big coconut, maple syrup, light toffee, caramel, chocolate, light lacto, and wood with a semi-bitter finish. Not a thin mouthfeel, but thinner than I would have imagined - soft carbonation. Pretty delicious stuff, but I can’t quite taste the rareness.

sample @ EBF 2015. unclear very dark brown with a frothy and creamy beige head, good retention and strong lacing. smoky roastiness, burnt malts - toffee, coffee and cream - double double as in overdonely cloying, chocolate-covered shiitakes, some resin and minerals. light carboantion, full body - syrupy and smooth; warming, sticky, cloying and smoky-woody-resinous finish. complex for sure, but hard to drink.

Tap at the owl farm. Pitch black pour. Chocolate, coffee, mint, maple syrup, vanilla. Smooth and complex. Acidity, sweetness, oak, sourness, alcohol all blended well. Full body. So smooth and big vanilla finish. Awesome

Bottle. Deep black body with a short brown head. Aroma of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, molasses. Hint of oak and alcohol. The flavor is heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. Full body, velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Super maple-sugary sweet with a hot alcohol finish. But nice tastes of chocolate and bourbon with coffee in the background. The super sweetness muddles the complexity of the flavors on the tongue. Still, a nice sipper. Thanks wnoble.

Lucky to be in GR when Founders was serving draft. Enjoyed more than one and is as good as the reviews and ratings show. The syrup is not overdone which is a perfect finish to this stout.
