Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

Tasted on tap at the Royale gathering last night. It poured an opaque, dark orangish-brown color with a thin but lasting beige head and lace. Aromas of freshly baked brown bread and hazelnut coffee. Flavor was dominated by hazelnut coffee too, but was nonetheless malty sweet with balanced bitterness from dark grains and hops, tart, dry, toasty, roasty. It was interesting to me how like real hazelnuts it tasted, as opposed to artificial Carnation sweetener or something.

Clear chestnut pour thin off white soapy head and light lacing ... aroma is very fresh and like opening a bag of fresh grounded hazelnut coffee and a nice roasted feel .... taste is roasted and caramel malts with fresh hazelnut coffee and mild bitterness ... abv is 9 and hidden very well considering the body is medium ... nice roasted flavors continue in the finish along with some bitterness ... if the taste was on par with the aroma wow this would be off the hook ... still a great beer

750ml bottle ----> glass - Damn I love every aspect of this beer! The coffee acidity, the smoothness, the texture, the aroma! Excellent stuff. This is not a beer for non-java drinkers.

bottle. clear light brown with a small beige head. nose of robust hazelnut with black coffee beans. light and airy finish from the high abv. the flavor has strong hazelnut notes, but also fusely with not enough sweetness. the light dryness and the quick airy finish leave something to be desired. not what i was expecting from the first whiff of the aroma.

Pours a dark brown with a decent khaki head that fades quickly. Aroma is straight hazelnut coffee, very sweet and nutty smelling, smooth coffee scents, like sticking your face right in a can of fresh ground hazelnut coffee. Flavor is the same, nutty and slight roasty coffee flavors, good and sweet, not cloying, a faint bitterness at the end to cleanse the palate, body is a bit thin but I think it fits the brew. This beer is fantastic and a must try.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a medium sized tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of hazelnuts, coffee, cocoa, honey. The taste is coffee, honey, nuts, caramel. A little harsh and the hazelnut coffee flavors are overwhelming. Medium bodied, slight bitterness. I especially don’t like the use of artificial flavors. I’m not sure what you were thinking here, Founders, but even just using real ingredients would have made a much better beer. Proof that even the best breweries fail from time to time.

750ml bottle shared by pineypower, thanks Dean. Poured a hazy dark brown with choclate brown edges and an average sized frothy super light beige head. Aroma is pretty much amazing, iced hazelnut coffee some toast and lemon zest on the end. The body is thinner with average carbonation, slight bitter finish that is a touch dry. Flavor is good but not as good as the aroma, notes of very bitter cold weak coffee, hazelnutts, cream, old cold coffee, some earth notes. The aroma is absolutely amazing and the flavor is solid but no where near the aroma.

Dark brown pour, light brown head. Aroma is all coffee and hazelnuts. Man this smells good. Sweet and rich. Flavor follows suit. If you don’t like coffee and/or hazelnuts then don’t expect to like this. But I love both and thought that his was really delicious.

Growler shared by b3shine. Pours a clear brown color with some reddish highlights and a medium sized off white head. The aroma is a blast of hazlenut with coffee, vanilla, caramel, and toasted malts. The flavor still has a big dose of hazlenut but the coffee becomes more pronounced. Additional flavors of caramel, vanilla, and toasted malt. I know this isn’t a big imperial stout, but this could use more body to help pull off all if the flavors.

Oh my. Deep brown pour. Foamy head Instant aroma of hazelnut coffee. Tastes like some kind of hazelnut chocolate liquor. Different combination of flavors than breakfast stout. I like this slightly better but the two feel like cousins to me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
