COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Frangelic Mountain Brown is the quintessential taproom “one-off” beer: Founders’ brewers created the Mountain Brown series for their taproom in Grand Rapids in 2007. Frangelic Mountain Brown is the 16th iteration in the series of popular brown ales—and it likely won’t be the last. The singular characteristic of this beer comes from the use of hazelnut coffees in the brewing process. The beer has distinct aromatics with sweet and nutty flavors beautifully balanced. Founders is known for its beers made with coffee (i.e., the Breakfast Stout series), but this is both the brewery’s first brown ale and its first beer brewed with hazelnut coffees to be bottled. It clocks in at 9% ABV.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a clear reddish brown color with a medium sized tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of hazelnuts, coffee, cocoa, honey. The taste is coffee, honey, nuts, caramel. A little harsh and the hazelnut coffee flavors are overwhelming. Medium bodied, slight bitterness. I especially don’t like the use of artificial flavors. I’m not sure what you were thinking here, Founders, but even just using real ingredients would have made a much better beer. Proof that even the best breweries fail from time to time.

750ml bottle shared by pineypower, thanks Dean. Poured a hazy dark brown with choclate brown edges and an average sized frothy super light beige head. Aroma is pretty much amazing, iced hazelnut coffee some toast and lemon zest on the end. The body is thinner with average carbonation, slight bitter finish that is a touch dry. Flavor is good but not as good as the aroma, notes of very bitter cold weak coffee, hazelnutts, cream, old cold coffee, some earth notes. The aroma is absolutely amazing and the flavor is solid but no where near the aroma.

Dark brown pour, light brown head. Aroma is all coffee and hazelnuts. Man this smells good. Sweet and rich. Flavor follows suit. If you don’t like coffee and/or hazelnuts then don’t expect to like this. But I love both and thought that his was really delicious.

Growler shared by b3shine. Pours a clear brown color with some reddish highlights and a medium sized off white head. The aroma is a blast of hazlenut with coffee, vanilla, caramel, and toasted malts. The flavor still has a big dose of hazlenut but the coffee becomes more pronounced. Additional flavors of caramel, vanilla, and toasted malt. I know this isn’t a big imperial stout, but this could use more body to help pull off all if the flavors.

Oh my. Deep brown pour. Foamy head Instant aroma of hazelnut coffee. Tastes like some kind of hazelnut chocolate liquor. Different combination of flavors than breakfast stout. I like this slightly better but the two feel like cousins to me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Smells of roasted coffee, touches of vanilla, some chocolatey elements, some hints of earthiness. Tastes sweet with pronounced coffee notes, roasty, some bitter elements and a moderate earthy finish. Interesting, but this is more like a beer blended with actual coffee than a beer.

I should begin this review by saying I am not a huge brown ale lover, but I am a Founders slappy and I love coffee. Pours a very, very deep ruby brown with 2 fingers of tannish head that dissapated quickly. Immediate smells of hazelnut coffee beans, some maltiness dancing in the background but well overpowered by sweet frangelic coffee-ness. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth with medium carbonation but the alcohol is certainly present and perhaps detracts a little bit from the experience. The finish is the wonderful caramel nutty sweetness hanging around on the back of your palate. Overall another great Founders offering just not in my style wheelhouse.

No bottling date.

A: Hazy dark brown/mahogany body with a thin light tan head on top. Solid looking beer.

S: A very strong aroma of sweet and mildly roasty hazelnut coffee and slight cocoa. This smells exactly like an iced hazelnut coffee, which is fantastic.

T: A slightly sweet and mildly roasted hazelnut makes up the flavor here, there are hints of caramel and cocoa, but man this is hazelnut and it’s wonderful.

M: Medium bodied with good amounts of mildly fizzy carbonation. A bit bready.

O: If you love hazelnut coffee then this is the beer for you. This is fantastic and everything I dreamed it would be. This would be the perfect morning beer.

Bottle to snifter. Pours dark brown amber color with a quick sudsy off white head that fades to a wispy film and tiny collar. Aroma is strong coffee and hazelnut with a malt background. Taste is more hazelnut coffee and some vanilla and nutty with a slight bitterness and malty backbone. Palate is medium with a little creaminess and finishes dry. I really enjoyed this.
