Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

75cl, as Founders Bolt Cutter, new exclusive American brew Anno 2012, thx to Secret Santa!, very complex brew, sweet/alcoholic and slightly fruity/woody, not too heavy, balanced, hazy, small head, very good brew, yet very expensive!, WOW!

Draft at Kite and Key. Pours a murky copper with thin beige head and lacing. Very boozy nose, sugary, some oak. The taste is sweet and syrupy but much more smooth than the nose would indicate. Good hop flavor with orange, pine, toasted marshmallow and sweet malts.

Bottle. Pours an orange, dark amber color. Aroma is fruity, toffee, and some booze. Taste is dark fruit, sweet, toffee, brown sugar, some barrel, and booze. I didnít find this to be as hot as Iíve heard others say. A big, sticky barleywine. Very good.

Pours a dark red copper color, woody aroma with a sweet booze taste up front with a slight caramel finish, canít wait to see how it cellars

Pours a rust color, the head is fairly nice sized and the lacing is dotted and doesnít really stick around.

The aroma is resiny with plenty of alcohol. Some orange-peel & bourbon in there as well.

The flavor is stupidly booze forward, very resiny, with a little bit of caramel. The flavor is plenty sweet & plenty bitter with an interesting but muddled and unfocused hop character.
I drank it out of an oversized snifter, and after some swishing and swirling (and warming) this got more and more pleasant, finally giving off some of the maple and oaky flavors... not fully abandoning the resiny alcoholic mess but gaining some rich toffee.

The palate is a little sticky, and the low carbonation fits a beer of this size well, but the beer is way too hot on alcohol to give a very good mouthfeel.

Iím not going to sit here and call this "garbage juice" or proclaim how awful it is... It is at worst mildly unpleasant with some decent things going on. I can see this as a beer that may be suited for long term aging, but itís initial impression combined with the $20 (minimum) price tag just keep me from testing that theory.

Sampler size at the Chicago old ale fest. Aroma is a refreshing vanilla and bourbon blend. Appearance is orange and bubbly with good head retention and lacing. Taste is more vanilla, bourbon, dried fruit, and a very faint breakfast sweetness, courtesy of the maple barrels. Thereís some heat on the tongue from that ultra-high abv, but it doesnít impact the beerís drinkability. You could easily wash down a full glass of this stuff, and quickly. Palate is light side of medium, decent-lasting flavors, bubbly. Overall, I really liked this beer and Iím anxious to (1) find it on a tap and (2) get a bottle of it for the cellar.

Bottle. Fiery, hazy orange-red body, medium to thin cream head. Pungent nose with notes of pineapple and grapefruit, huge, sticky, sweet brown sugar and caramel, candies, and alcohol. Big caramely body, round, rich, and candy-like, with slick, bitter tropical fruit hops. Hints of tootsie roll or chocolate-covered candied orange peel. A big beer, and a very good one.

22 oz bomber. Pours orange and amber. Aroma is sweet of plums and raisins. Taste is boozy but the maple syrup definitely stands out. Definitely on the sweet side as expected with the style. Agree that itís a little high on the price point but nicely done for a barleywine.

Bottle @ a recent bottle share... Poured reddish/amber/golden with a thin head. Always a pleasure to have a beer that has spend some time in maple bourbon barrels. Even though partially in maple bourbon barrels, it was still slightly detected. Toasted grains, sugars, and nuts. Dark fruits with caramel, toffee, and vanilla. Bourbon, oak, and charred malt.

Pours a dark orange color with a quickly disipating white head. The aroma is filled with syrupy sweet caramel, virtually no wood, and some piney hops. On the palate, its more of the same. Interestingly, on draft I found this to be much better balanced than out of the bottle. The bottle sample was way, way, way overly sweet and messy. Not very complex... somewhat dissapointing.
