COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Blind Tiger was giving full pours of this monster, therefore responsibly Tom gave me a nice pour of his to share. Pours ruby red with great nose of dark fruits, spices, syrup, and bourbon. Tastes of bourbon, roasted malt, caramel, woody, maple, pepper, plums, figs, and hops. Slight warming and sweet finish. delightful in moderation

Fortunate to try on tap before wasting $20+ on a bottle. Pours rich amber with a one finger tan foam head with good retention. Vanilla and syrup on the nose. Sweet malt produces a full body that encapsulates solid bitterness on the finish. Booze also gives a slight burn. Its good, not great.

Murky brown 1 finger head that fades instantly. Huge maple and vanilla on the nose. Malty sweet nose. Taste is uber sweet. Fresh hop bitterness. Cloyingly sweet. Like caramel. Booze comes through at the finish. Heavy body. Low carbonation. Sweet boozy finish Honestly, my homebrew maple barley wine tastes better. Maybe with time this will improve. Booze isnt well hidden. Ill update my review after a year I gues.

Awesome aroma of fruit, bread. Slightest hint of booze. The appearance is a ruby red, translucent, off-white head. the flavor is just like the aroma, again remarkable how little booziness there is. The finish is sweet, light pine, some booze burn. Medium/thick in body. Excellent.

Pours reddish-orange with a thin, greyish head. Scent is fruit, candied caramel and vanilla. A little booze....amazingly little for 15%.... Taste is sweet, caramel, sugar, syrupy....toasty bread. Pretty good barrel tones, a little green... A nice, slow sipper. Interesting tidbit: I could be mistaken, but I swear the colour is getting more red the longer it breathes..... Pretty amazing brew...Id never guess its numbers at 15% ABV/ 85 IBU.... Great, just great.

Tap. Pours to a glowing deep chestnut mahogany body with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet syrupy grains and bitter hops. Some peppery hops. The flavor is sweet barley and vanilla with lots of grassy hops. Subtle pine. Sticky caramel and toffee and maple syrup. Full body but not sticky. No hint of alcohol.

Amber pour, small head from draft. Hoppy smell, some brown sugar and booze.Very smooth, hops in the middle, sweet up front from the maple. Finishes bourbon boozy and warm. Good barley wine, nice and balanced. Though there is kind of a lot going on. Try it if you can find it.

Aroma- muted hints of toffee, caramel, dark fruits, olives Appearance- copper colored, flat, classic style Taste- blast of caramel, toffee, and raisins upfront, some slight bourbon hints in the middle with even more toffee and caramel on the finish, definite alcohol presence as well Palate- full-bodied, a complete sipper Overall- A monster barley wine from Founders. A close friend actually told me it was his favorite barley wine and that it was extremely drinkable. For me, this beer was just too hot. Also, where is the maple syrup and the barrel qualities? Decent beer but a bit of a letdown having the Founders name attached to it.

Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich near transparent golden hue, some darkness, rich glow, healthy tannish haze. Aromas are a bit sticky, vanilla and toffee, some toast, barrel, gentle spirit. Oak, whiskey. Initial is gentle toffee, toast, some carmelization. Firm oak, gentle spirit, wet earthy hop. Middle is gentle dry hops, touches of toast, oak, and mellow dough. Toasty a bit, mellow oak, vanilla, spirit. Backend shows gentl warmth, sweetness, gentle oak, dryness, and barrel. Finish is gentle sweetness, dulled, mellow. Meh. A hoppy barley wine that lacks much oak character. Perhaps age will completely transform this but I was a bit underwhelmed especially at the price point it sees on the market.

On tap at Capones. Poured a mahogany color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of vanilla, dark fruits, some bourbon, wood, maple, and vanilla. Tastes of caramel, dark fruits, wood, bourbon, lighter maple, and vanilla. Some alcohol in the finish, but no where near 15%.
