COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Made to Celebrate Founders 15th Anniversary, Bolt Cutter Barley Wine is an American barley wine that pours deep copper color and is strong, sweet and malt-forward, with a spicy complexity. Typical of the style, it is very cellarable. The final product is a blend using beer that was aged in Bourbon barrels, some from aged maple syrup Bourbon barrels and some from standard fermentation. After blending, the beer was allowed to mature in bottles and kegs for a few months before releasing.

Pours deep amber, smell of citrus and barley. Tastes very much like a standard barley wine, but no barrel at all. A nice beer but a bit over hyped.

Bomber. Just avarage! Rich amber beer with a light cream colored head. Light bourbon and light malt aroma. light bourbon and light malt flavor with some light earthiness. Medium bodied. Light bourbon and caramel lingers with some earthiness. Swing and a miss on this one.

Bomber at Jerry’s. Brilliant caramel color with decent, creamy tan head (barrel-aged) / Rich nose of fresh caramel, pine, and citrus / Full body, sweet and chewy, winey with an alcohol kick but balance with big malts and biting hops, and good bitter finish / Flavors of fresh caramel, cut pine, candied sugar, maple syrup, grapefruit, orange peel, lime, fig, cinnamon, and a hint of bourbon / Spectacular, and will undoubtedly age.

draft at Coles, Buffalo. Creamy amber orange pour. Solid lacing. Big aroma of rich maltiness, toffee, sweet maple & bourbon notes. Big toffee flavors, orange, sweet maple, bourbon flavors. Big boozy mouthfeel. Definite sipper. Good but 15% is hard to handle

FROTHINGSLOSH (5402) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 10, 2012
From the 12/2012 3R6P tasting. +++ Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured an orange- caramel color with a small foamy white head that faded and left no lacing. The aroma was pineapple, lemon, pine, gin, and sweet/tangy malts. The flavor was bitter and sour with notes of caramel, molasses, faint pineapple, gin, Windex and a boozy presence. Very long bitter and sour caramel, and pineapple finish. Moderately full bodied and syrupy. Ok.

Tap. Pours hazy Reddish deep amber, medium beige head, nice lacing. Aroma is light pine, spruce, caramel, wood. Flavor its very hop forward, resin, herbal, almost spicy, with a malt and rye backbone. Medium sweet, medium bitter lasting through the far finish. Medium bodied, creamy and oily on the mouth. ABV comes through in the warming finish. Decent enough, but what’s with all the hype?

On tap at Founders. Poured a medium-dark amber color with minimal white head. Aroma was sweet with some caramel and toffee. Flavor followed with some hoppiness and perhaps a little molasses and bourbon. Alcohol was not in the forefront, making this dangerous. Pretty good.

Bottle. Aroma has big notes of caramel, vanilla, wood, maple syrup, fruit cake, cinnamon, orange peel, bourbon, toasted malts and ginger. Wow, a lot going on here. Appearance is murky dark amber orange with a cascading average off-white head that left good lace. Flavor is very sweet and bitter. Palate is extremely full bodied and oily soft. Alcohol is there(slight burn as it goes down) but amazingly well hidden. Finish is above average but not as cloying as others have noted. As close to drinking a fruitcake as I’ll ever come. Overall I was expecting an average Barely Wine but found one that over emphasized everything I love about the style(which is probably what got lost on most people). This beer is huge and as complex as any I’ve come across. I loved the emphasis on blending the sweet bourbon and maple with the classic BW dark dried fruits and caramel aromas. That blending was done very well just like a good fruit cake. A true sipper if there ever was one.

Strykzone (5503) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - DEC 6, 2012
Sampled at an esbls tasting. Dark copper with a little foam. A fruit and malty aroma. A bit of harshness. Some spice and nice rich fruit. Big malts. A good example of the style.
