COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Doom is unleashed when Founders’ award-winning specialty Imperial IPA, Double Trouble, is aged in bourbon barrels for four months to create a distinct flavor experience. So, while Double Trouble is brewed to turn your world upside down, Doom is brewed to tear it apart: pungent hops conspire with boozy bourbon notes to send your senses spinning.

Multiple samples at NOTB and EBF 2009. Founders is by far one of my favorite companies but this whole barrel aging phenomenon has gotten out of hand. Hops are best served fresh not sitting around inside a barrel to pick up some oak and bourbon. The aroma and flavor of vanilla, bourbon and oak really takes away from the hops. Oh well they can’t all be winners and please stop barrel aging IPAs and IIPAs.

EBF NOTB. Clear golden with a medium head. Aroma of tropical fruit, some resin, oak bourbon. Clashes a bit. Taste: Good hop character, but the oak and bourbon get in the way for me too much to enjoy it. I’d much rather have a good straight up IIPA.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2010 In short: A strong IIPA with a sugary sweet body, a refreshing grapefruity hopping and an awkward bourbon barrel presence. Good.
How: Tap at Boston Extreme Beer Fest 2009
The look: Clear golden-yellow topped by a medium white head
In long: Nose is an unusual mix of refreshing tropical fruits and bourbon barrel. Body is a bit slimmer than I like in a 11% IPA. Instead of thick rich caramel I got sugary thin caramel. Refreshing hops profile with grapefruit being the dominant flavour. Nice tartness. Light-medium bourbon barrels presence in the taste. A decent beer but honestly a bourbon barrel flavour in a refreshing grapefruity IIPA feels as forced and natural as the dialogue of the contestants introduction on Jeopardy.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2009 Draft. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Big hop nose and whiskey notes, sweet chewy hoppy citrus, and pine. A bit warm light a bw, and has a similar salty character. Lush fruit, floral grapefruit. An odd ball for sure.

Limited tap at Founders. Not much to say about it really, a bourbon barrel IIPA, which ive been having mixed feelings about ever since. I guess the idea had to be done, but i dont think it came out the greatest. The bourbon covers up a lot of the bitterness which takes away all the great things of an IIPA. Sometimes bourbon aging everything isn’t the best way to go.

Try the Black Bastard of Doom... Have the server mix: Black IPA, Dirty Bastard and Hand of Doom.. You might regret it!

On tap at Founders. Medium orange, hazy body, thin off-white head. Big, potent bourbon nose with notes of apricot, vanilla, and oak. The palate is bourbon-driven at serving temperature, but the big, bright, grapefruit rind hops and sweet, sugary, caramely malts dominate the beer at warmer temperatures. Warming alcohol notes and bitter rindy hops finished the sip. Excellent beer.
