Doom is unleashed when Founders’ award-winning specialty Imperial IPA, Double Trouble, is aged in bourbon barrels for four months to create a distinct flavor experience. So, while Double Trouble is brewed to turn your world upside down, Doom is brewed to tear it apart: pungent hops conspire with boozy bourbon notes to send your senses spinning.

double trouble aged in oak barrels..phenomenal..tap..pours cloudy orange with small off-white head..large bourbon/oak, resinous hops and grapefruit rind in the aroma...leads to a huge oaky, floral flavor..very fresh and crisp..oak/bourbon proves a big punch without outweighing or dominating the hop characteristics of the allready good double trouble

On tap at Founders Fest 09. This one is a dark amber color. The aroma is of hops and citrus, there is a slight sweetness to it. The taste is about the same. It has the hops flavor that I would expect in an IPA, but it was very caramel tasting as well. The sweetness worked well with this one.

On tap at Founders Fest 09. Poured amber with a small off-white head. Lively carbonation. Aroma is of oak, citrus, bourbon, hops, grapefruit, caramel malt, and alcohol. Taste starts off very hoppy, with a huge citrus flavor. Backbone is of caramel malt, and it does not get lost with all the bourbon and oak. Huge oak and bourbon flavors in this beer. Each sip ends with a huge lingering oakiness. Alcohol is present, but there is too much going on for it to hinder the beer. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky. Amazingly drinkable, with only a little alcohol warming effect. The citrus flavors blended well with the oak, which surprised me. Loved it.

Another epic brew I had on tap at Founders Fest. Poured a dark honey amber with tan head. The aroma-Bourbon whiskey, the flavor-Bourbon whiskey with hints of vanilla and cinnamon on the finish. Amazing, amazing stuff. Cheers!

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2009 On tap @ Founders. A light golden orange color with a thin offwhite head, soft light carbonation, lots of lacing left. Aroma of sugary grapefruit, vanilla, oak, and light burbon. Flavor is nice and hoppy,bitter/sweet citrus and grapefruit, with a woody, vanilla, burbon background, some sweet malty flavors come through as it warms. A little boozy on the finish, sticky mouthfeel, . I liked this and thought it was really good but I like Double Trouble a lot better.

Tap at Founders. Somewhat hazy, yellow-gold pour with just a small ring of white head. Loads of sweet citrus and bubblegum (just like Double Trouble) and sweet honey. The oak, vanilla, and bourbon were only faintly detectable over the hops at first but started to come out a lot more as it warmed up. The flavor also had some peppery phenol notes and was a little like butterscotch candy when it warmed up. Sticky, medium full body with soft carbonation and some alcohol warming.

tap at founders last weekend... medium orange brown pour with a soapy white head...citrusy hop aroma with a medium backdrop of wood, vanilla, and light bourbon. i thought it smelled rather nice actually...flavors had more of bourbon barrel essence than was indicated in the nose. def more woody, vanilla, and bourbon character which really cut into the hops that made double trouble so nice.

On tap at the brewpub, as a note this was double trouble aged on bourbon for 116 days. Cloudy orange with creamy white, pancake head. Slightly hoppy, BIG vanilla, alc and overall barrel character, citrus, dirty grapefruit, really nice. Real strong bourbon, bitter grapefruit and other citrus hops, the oak and bourbon is amazingly strong and almost too hot and hairspray, tasty though. Medium to light body with light carbonation. Tasty and interestingbut hot.

Multiple samples at NOTB and EBF 2009. Founders is by far one of my favorite companies but this whole barrel aging phenomenon has gotten out of hand. Hops are best served fresh not sitting around inside a barrel to pick up some oak and bourbon. The aroma and flavor of vanilla, bourbon and oak really takes away from the hops. Oh well they can’t all be winners and please stop barrel aging IPAs and IIPAs.
