Big and delicious for your ’perty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2011 Pours brown with a red tint with a small off white head. Smells of scotch and light fruits, tastes of the same with slight chocolate notes. Taste is not as boozy as the smell however it is still present on the palate.

(bottle) Perhaps the perfect winter evening beer. Coffee, silky chocolate and brandy flavors with a smooth mouth feel. Long-lasting and full flavored. A perfect alternative to brandy. This is what craft brewing is all about.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2014 Deep brown and red. Nice yellow-tan head. Holy bourbon! The mix of aroma with the bourbon barrel and the dark fruit/malt gives the aroma almost a pineapple/coconut aroma. Great flavor depth with dark fruit, peat-smoked malt, bourbon. Alcohol warmth. Medium to full body. Excellent. Cellar 3-6 months. Good fresh.

Pours extremely dark red with a slight brownish tint and a small off-white head. Large carbonation bubbles and nice lacing as well. Aroma is of scotch, rum, smoke, light fruits, Flavor is a wee heavy on the alcohol as to be expected and includes notes of raspberry, cherry, bitter chocolate, and a subtle roasted finish. Damn good scotch ale.

Pours muddy clay brown with a medium off-white head. Aroma is of whisky bourbon, vanilla, and malt. Taste is distinctly bourbon and vanilla; malt and alcohol. Very good heavy beer with a very smooth perfect mouth feel which is only to expect from Founder’s. For a scotch ale the whisky overpowers a bit, not a traditional scotch ale. Then again they already make the perfect traditional scotch ale at Founder’s. Overall wonderful, glad to have purchased, good to see founders continuing to push the envelope.

For a scotch ale this one is pretty different from any other that I’ve tasted. Has a super dark pour, not quite black, but brown. Has a nice thick head, bubbly and frothy. Has a big woody aroma to it, with slight hints of fruit to it. The taste is malty, but oaky as well. It seems really balanced and pretty easy to drink. Not too big.

odd aroma, more scotch and smoke and wood than beer, also something else, sharp mustard maybe? somehow smells like it’s gonna be sweet and sour and dry and spicy. flavor is different, sweet--kinda like eating a bowl of scotch and cherries (but even more delicious). slightly astringent, flat, and you taste the scotch cherries for like an hour.

Pours a cloudy brown hue. No head to speak of. Aroma slight hint of berries or grape, slightly sweet. Slight hints of berries and malts that blend in perfectly with the nice whiskey finish. My first scotch ale and I am very pleased.

My 100th. 2010 bottle thanks to A. Pours mahogany with thick, one-finger tan head that slowly fades. Nose of molasses, scotch, maple syrup, vanilla and caramel. Slightly hot up front (bourbon) but there is a full palate of rye, smoke, malt, bread, and oak in the middle. Long finish as the 10.2% might suggest. I am a fan. I wish I had another to cellar; I imagine this would age quite well.
