Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a dark brownish-red with a small white head. The aroma is awesome, lots of cherry, vanilla and bourbon. The flavor is just as great, with the same cherry, vanilla and bourbon notes, with the vanilla being the most dominant flavor. There is very little detectable alcohol. The mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is low.

Excellent Scoth ale. The alcohol is remarkably well hidden. A great beer to have with a book by a fire. This beer warms the body and is quite enjoyable.

Draft at Caponeís; I hope you like bourbon (I do!); Aroma is of bourbon and vanilla; mouthfeel reminds you that this isnít for the weak of heart; chestnut-like color with no head; contrary to the commercial description, I didnít think it was a "sipper"; the faster I drank it, the smoother it got; I would definitely get it again under the right circumstances

On tap at Capones. Can you say whiskey? Aroma in the glass is of a nice sipping whiskey. Taste really shows it was stored in bourbon barrels. Interesting, but not what I wanted when I ordered a beer sampler.

Aroma is of bourbon and oak, with some alcohol and malt. Taste is a blend of bourbon and malted ale. Smooth on the palate. Initially sweet and finishes earthy and boozy. Overall this is a fantastic beer that expands the genre of scotch ales.

Cloudy as hell; heavy bourbon and rum liqueur aroma, cherries and oak. Barleywine country. Not for the weak.

A: Backwoods Bastard pours a cloudy, muddled amber/brown color with pretty much no foam. S: This certainly smells like a fine liquor. A lot of bourbon and vanilla. There is also a very strong oak aroma. T: The taste has many of the same characteristics of the nose. A lot of oak, vanilla, bourbon, and maybe a touch of chocolate. There is also a bitterness in there somewhere. M: Very smooth, creamy, and full bodied. The carbonation is on the low side. D: I was expecting to be blown away by booze, but it really was quite manageable. That said, you still feel it after enjoying a bottle.

Pours murky amber brown with an off white head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel and a little bit of chocolate. Flavor is a rich blend of caramel, oak, bourbon, and velvety vanilla. This beer has a lot of bourbon character, but isnít too overpowering. Pretty good.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a dark mohogany color with slight burnt orange highlights. Very small amount of head thats thin and disappears quickly leaving little to no lacing. Smell has a very strong alcohol presence. Very much vanilla and chocolate liquor. I can smell the oak from the barreling and i can get some of the bourbon notes as well. Theres a lot of complexities as far as flavor. I can taste, chocolate, figs, dates, molasses, bosc pear, sour apple, banana, oak, and a touch of vanilla. Alcohol is very noticable and not hidden at all. Very much bourbon like. Mouthfeel is a bit heavy. Lots of alcohol on the tongue and on the swallow. Drinkability is below average on this one. I doubt i could or would want to drink more then one of these backwoods bastards. Not that its a bad beer. Theres just a bit too much alcohol presence then i can enjoy. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys scotch. This is definately a sipper.

#900. 12oz bottle from Binnyís River Grove. Pours lightly hazed dark brown with small tan head that leaves a tan rings on the edges of my glass. Aromas of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, sweet malts, toffee, and some dark fruits. Flavors of bourbon, vanilla, sweet malts, caramel, toffee, bit of smoke, some dark fruits, and a bit of booze. Finishes with some light smoke and alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and has nice carbonation for a BA beer of this size. Really nice balance between bourbon barrel and the scotch ale flavors. I liked regular bastard but this is taken to another level. Really good stuff.
