3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Thanks Secret Santa! Pours dark ruby red with a smallish khaki colored head that fades to a ring. Aroma features a good amount of fruit, which surprised me. After it evens out, thereís wood, bourbon, drinking chocolate, sambuca, nuts, pears, and apple sauce. Itís a nice "light/dark" mix. Flavor begins with the pears and cherries quickly followed up by caramel, wood, bourbon, light cocoa, and nuts. Finishes drier with earth, leaves, wood, and a bourbon aftertaste. Not too heavy on the palate, with a slick and fairly hot mouthfeel, and prickly carbonation. Itís very enjoyable, but shy of the best barrel-aged beers.

UPDATED: SEP 18, 2010 pours a tea brown with no head or sediment. nose is slightly alcoholic with strong malt aromas. taste very malty, creamy, and smooth. subtle candy flavors are noticeable, almost caramelly but not in the forefront. does have a decent amount of alcohol in the palate, but suits me fine. Very nicely surprised with this beer

Nice oak overtones with smoky, earthy notes. This is the last bottle of a 4-pack that I cannot get locally and it took me this long to figure out whether it is worth replacing in my beer cellar. The vanilla and Bourbon flavors on my last sip make it a thumbs up.

lightly cloudy brownish reddish pour w/ a tall firm small bubbled light tan head. Palate is nice, smooth and creamy. Nice aroma bourbon was my first smell then some caramel and a touch of vanilla a tiny hint of pepper and oak. My only complaint is the aroma drops off w/ the head. Very sweet taste lots and lots of caramel hints of bourbon and oak, a touch of cherries in the finish is quite nice with the bourbon. A delicious beer.

Ugh. Super sweet. I canít say I encountered a whole lot of barrel or bourbon flavor. Just a malt bomb. I probably should have known.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle. Pours dark ruby with one-finger khaki head. Bourbon hits the nose, then some earthy dirt smell, hint of cherry. Great sweet caramel and vanilla and only a hint of bourbon up front. Then just a hint of dry bitter coffee and a long caramel finish. A bit boozy and the bourbon lingers in the back of the throat. Medium body and pretty light carb. The more I drink, it gets more and more boozy, but this is the only negative.
Overall, a fantastic beer. I think it could use a bit more smokiness or peat, but i love this as a bourbon aged scotch. Will definitely be seeking this out again.

Bottle shared by duffmansw. Pours clear reddish copper with a thin off white head. Aroma is oaky with some toasty caramel and dark fruits. Flavor is sweet and bourbony with some buttery toffee, vanilla, and over ripe fruits. Full bodied and sticky with moderate carbonation.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle. Pours a cloudy, deep reddish amber colored body with a finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is bursting with woody bourbon and vanilla. Once this starts warming up, medium sweet caramels and toffees come in. Some dark fruits as well. Flavor is similar and solid. Lots of vanilla and bourbon, but lots of balancing malts. Caramels and toffees, some fruit, and a light spicing before this finishes with a touch of chocolate and dries with a woody, earthy finish. The hops are somewhat muted by everything else going on, but they offer a light bitterness. Rich malts and plenty of vanilla-bourbon in a long aftertaste. Body is full and smooth with just a touch of soft carbonation. Overall, this was nice. Lots of bourbon and caramel with the vanilla adding a really pleasant sweetness. The woodiness doesnít dry this too much and leaves the body full and smooth. This is clearly dominated by the barrel aging, but it has other things going on that make it quite enjoyable. Good stuff.
