Appearance- deep dark oak brown, borderline mahogany, thin white head, nice alcohol coating
Taste- mild spices, cinnamon, oak, bourbon, vanilla, super smooth, actually incredibly smooth
Palate- low carbonation, mouthcoatingly awesome
Overall- Founders does it again. Dirty Bastard, their scotch ale, is an incredible brew as is. When aged on bourbon, this beer manifests into a real smooth monster. Great frickin brew!

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 18, 2011 Aroma of molasses and whiskey. Pours a brown/dark red looking color. Very little head - tan colored. Heavy raisin, whiskey, oak, and some vanilla flavors..I can taste the alcohol in this beer on the finish and it comes through strong. Not getting much fruit flavors of any kind. Small amount of carbonation. Overall a great beer and I would get this again.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle from A Southern Season, Chapel Hill, NC.
Ar: Complex aroma with dominant notes of pit fruit, cherries, slight smokiness, and vanilla.
Ap: Pours a deep brown-red, a beautiful ruby hue when held to the light. Small manila head leaves great lace.
T: Sweet, complex flavors going on here. Lots of date, dried black fig, and a bit of cherry. Booze on the finish brings to mind Irish whiskey. A touch of toffee and chocolate on the finish as well.
P: Thick, creamy body with pretty mild carbonation.
O: I had been wanting to try this for some time, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Big, burly, maybe a bit cloying in its richness but damned good nonetheless.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours a dark ruby red color with a beige head. Aroma is super malty, with tons of dark fruits, some molasses, sugary notes, oak, bourbon, vanilla, subtle smoke and a buttery note. The flavor is nice and complex and really malty, with notes of caramel, dark fruits like a raisins and figs, brown sugar, bourbon, oak, vanilla, subtle smoke, buttery notes, syrupy notes and some toasted malt. The body is medium with a dry mouthfeel. Overall a really tasty Scotch Ale, probably my favorite in the style!

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pretty damn good beer. It is exactly what you would think if they took an already great beer in Dirty Bastard, and aged it in bourbon barrels. The aroma has a nice bourbon smell. The taste gives nice hints of bourbon, but not overpowering, with subtle smoke and cherry. One of the better beers I have had lately and understand why it was in such high demand. As usual, another winner from Founders!

Fan-freakin-tastic! Of the Scotch Ales (a.k.a. Wee Heavy) that I have tasted, this one is one of the best!! My thanks to Larry for the gift of this fine brew as I can’t find it in my area and we need to start carrying it! Wonderful scents of robust bourbon, dark fruits and vanilla. Gimme a case of these and leave me alone! Go easy on this brew as the alcohol is so well hidden. Some smoked venison or wild boar fajitas would pair oh so well!

Had on draught at 44 Stone. Went into it only with the expectation that Founders rarely misses.
Pours dark, rich and heavy with a very inviting nose. Tastes of Bourbon, Scotch, smoke, peat and toasted malt.
Simply put, a must try. I’ve had many a wee heavy/scotch ale in my days; most of them in Scotland. This now sets my standard for the style.
Incredible. Well done again, Founders.
