3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Originally reviewed: 4/6/09. Pours a tawny deep maroon. Very thick and cloudy (yeast?). No light comes through this beer at all. Smells of caramel, chocolate, oak, licorice, molasses. This is a full nose for sure. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy, almost chewable. Yet there was a slight crispness to it. Flavor is of syrup, booze, some woodsy notes, and big bourbon smack. This wasn’t what I expected at all. Way too boozy and thick for my liking. Interesting beer.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This beer has the pure aroma of bourbon. Smells fantastic! Pours a deep brown/amber... almost matches the color of the bottle perfectly. Very little to no head, just a touch around the edge of the glass. Bourbon is apparent at first sip. Alcohol is mostly covered up, but a bit of heat does come through. A tiny bit of sweetness is in no way overwhelming and balances nicely with a bit of hops that comes through on the back. Has a wood-like taste that is pleasant. Overall a great sipper, very delicious. It’s a little bit ale and a little bit stout-like.

It poured a red color with a light tan head. The aroma was notes of malt, caramel, some wood, and whiskey. The taste was sweet with strong notes of bourbon as well as medium notes of caramel and wood with a slightly burnt edge.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tap in a snifter. Chestnut brown pour with a short lived light beige head. Small bubbles cling to,the sides of the glass. Bourbon vanilla nose that is very pleasing. The taste has that same vanilla sweetness propped up by bourbon booze. The beer itself is malty as expected with a balancing hop bitterness (if you stop and look for it). Very flavorful, balanced, and well crafted. A treat for bourbon barrels aged beer lovers!

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a murky copper color. No head. Bourbon invades the nose also very sweet as well almost like caramel and a hint of dark fruit. The bourbon strikes when you take a sip but does not over power the beer. Sweeter than expected . Not a bad brew I would certainly drink it again. Bottle date: 11/16/09

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2014 09/14 re rate. Bumped up from 3.8. The aroma and taste when cold are higher than a 4.0. Too much f an aftertaste when it warms but outstanding colder. More rates to come!!!!................09/12 - lowered slightly; maybe an older bottle but aroma not a 9 as in first rate; all else still applies... rec’d in trade. rated this with Rhar iron Thistle - rated both a 4 but they were very different for being the same style... This beer is a 9 on aroma - bourbon, some, wood, malt, and vanilla? wow! creamy med thick palate. beer from glass to bottle; hazy amber/brown colow with big head with long lasting lacing. Taste - very sweet, roasted stuff, bourbon taste not is good as aroma (which is almost impossible) proabley liked iron thistle taste more but this had a better aroma...
