Big and delicious for your íperty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. Itís a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Bottle (cellared for 2-3 years). Very strong bourbon and maple aromas. Light dirty brown color with little head. Heavy bourbon in initial, which continues in mid, and in final with warming alcohol. Medium body. Alcohol is well masked in general. Extremely pleasant stuff, if a bit one-dimensional.

Thanks to Adam for sharing this brew. A: The beer has a brown transparent appearance, with tinges of crimson. There is a small head and a touch of lacing. S: Scents include sweet malts, toffee, oak, and bourbon. T: The beer packs some flavor. The initial taste brings oak and bourbon flavors, followed by a malty sweetness and peat from the scotch ale lurking beneath the wood and booze. M: The feel is moderately thin, with a slight alcohol burn in the finish. D: Drinkability is somewhat limited, as the strength and sweetness make this a slow sipper.

UPDATED: JUL 22, 2014 Draft at Khyber Pass in July 2012. Very dark orange amber with a thin fizzy head that mostly disappears. Looks identical to the non-barrel aged version (Dirty Bastard) but one whiff and you know your not in Kansas anymore. Big boozy bourbon barrel flavors pole vault out of the glass. Having just had the Dirty Bastard immediately prior, this one feels not so much "aged" but "infused" with Bourbon barrel goodness. The sweet crisp malts in the original are now flush with Bourbon. Maybe by a third. The addition tames the blunter notes. Certainly an improvement, but was still hoping for some darker notes. Huge alcohol here but finishes smooth. UPDATE: Having again at Khyber Pass in July 2014. My palate has improved far enough in just two years to better recognize that is one fantastic beer! Liked it from the start but after having 200 similar beers since then I can appreciate just how good this one is. Balanced and smooth despite the bourbon. Top notch!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip. Backwoods Bastard pours a dark cherry brown color; there is a nice tint where the light sneaks through in the edge of the glass. A bit of sediment gradually sinks to the bottom of the glass, and there is not much head to speak of on top. Bourbon definitely comes through in the aroma. Bourbon and oak coat a very malty base beer. Caramel, maple, and smooth grains provide the base aroma. The flavor is strong, smooth, and reminds me of a bourbon barrel old ale (in a good way). The bourbon is noticeable first, with sweet caramel, raisins, with a bit of molasses, peat, cocoa powder, and hazelnut as well. The body is full and rich, with carbonation on the low side. There is a very light alcohol burn on my tongue and in my throat, but I expect this in a 10% Wee Heavy. There is a little bit of oily residue behind my lips after each sip. This has less peat and smoke than other Scotch Ales, but being mistaken for a very good old ale is not a bad thing. I distinctly enjoyed this beer and would like to have it again.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 2011 vintage putting this bottle at about 8/9 months old. 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Wasnít a fan of this fresh so I decided to age a bottle. Reviewed on 07-10-2012. A - Dark red/brown clear body. One finger high light khaki head settles down to a patchy cap and thick edging. Swirling produces a huge and tight head. Decent lacing and retention but massive alcoholic legs. 4.0/5 S - Bourbon soaked figs and raisins, roasted malts, vanilla, brown sugar, and toffee. Really decadent and rich with the perfect balance between the bourbon and dark fruit. 4.5/5 T - Bourbon soaked dark fruits and loads of scotch ale notes. Vanilla, toffee, and brown sugar. The finish is pretty abrupt with a light lingering sweetness. Thereís also an odd bitterness after each sip that really goes against the sweet flavors. 3.5/5 M - Alcohol is well incorporated but it does warm the mouth at cellar temperature. Light to medium mouth feel with silky carbonation. 4.0/5 O - Age had does wonders on this beer. Crazy smooth and tasty. Not a fan of the bitterness in the aftertaste though. 3.88/5 --- 2012 vintage, bottled on 10/12/12. 12 oz bottle into a Founders 15th Anniversary glass. Giving this a proper re-review since I now love this beer and style. A - Pours a dark red/brown body that almost appears purple. This particular bottle is chill hazed with some floating protein particles. Iíve had many bottles of this batch that were crystal clear though. Three fingers worth of tan foam fades away into a patchy cap with attractive silky bubbles. Sticky lacing with modest retention. S - Such an amazing and inviting aroma. Gobs of rich and sweet english toffee with layers of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak. Brown sugar drenched raisins. Such a fantastic bourbon presence. T - Sweet toffee malts. Rich brown sugar and dates. Smooth bourbon with a noticeable but pleasant alcohol burn. Finishes with some butterscotch, vanilla oak and a touch of peat. Excellent. M - Thin to medium with silky carbonation. Drinks wonderfully and the alcohol is complimentary but never over the top. O - This has quickly become one of my favorite beers. Just bourbon drenched toffee perfection. Absolutely world class stuff.

Bottle 355 ml. Huge thanks to SourNotes for this one! Dark amber-brown. As expected, almost no head but beautiful fully lasting brown lacing. Aroma is dominated by bourbon with notes of oak, vanilla, caramel and smoke. Taste is also dominated by bourbon with woody notes, caramel, smoke, spices and vanilla. Strong warming alcohol Very nice sipper. This is a really good scotch ale. Bourbon may be a tad too present (it affects drinkability) but still bring this beer to another level. I would be interested to taste this beer with a couple of years under the belt to see if bourbon as mellowed and give the beer a better balance.

Pours a very dark amber color with a small amount of head. Huge sweet boozy aroma. Caramel malt, bourbon, smoke, and toffee aromas. Taste is very sweet but balances nicely with bourbon smokey flavor. Medium body with a very chewy mouthfeel. A noticable alcohol burn on the finish which leaves a sweet caramel malt flavor on the tongue along with some smoke too. Definitely a sipper with tons of bourbon flavor. Glad I finally got to try this.
