UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 2011 vintage putting this bottle at about 8/9 months old. 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Wasnít a fan of this fresh so I decided to age a bottle. Reviewed on 07-10-2012. A - Dark red/brown clear body. One finger high light khaki head settles down to a patchy cap and thick edging. Swirling produces a huge and tight head. Decent lacing and retention but massive alcoholic legs. 4.0/5 S - Bourbon soaked figs and raisins, roasted malts, vanilla, brown sugar, and toffee. Really decadent and rich with the perfect balance between the bourbon and dark fruit. 4.5/5 T - Bourbon soaked dark fruits and loads of scotch ale notes. Vanilla, toffee, and brown sugar. The finish is pretty abrupt with a light lingering sweetness. Thereís also an odd bitterness after each sip that really goes against the sweet flavors. 3.5/5 M - Alcohol is well incorporated but it does warm the mouth at cellar temperature. Light to medium mouth feel with silky carbonation. 4.0/5 O - Age had does wonders on this beer. Crazy smooth and tasty. Not a fan of the bitterness in the aftertaste though. 3.88/5 --- 2012 vintage, bottled on 10/12/12. 12 oz bottle into a Founders 15th Anniversary glass. Giving this a proper re-review since I now love this beer and style. A - Pours a dark red/brown body that almost appears purple. This particular bottle is chill hazed with some floating protein particles. Iíve had many bottles of this batch that were crystal clear though. Three fingers worth of tan foam fades away into a patchy cap with attractive silky bubbles. Sticky lacing with modest retention. S - Such an amazing and inviting aroma. Gobs of rich and sweet english toffee with layers of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak. Brown sugar drenched raisins. Such a fantastic bourbon presence. T - Sweet toffee malts. Rich brown sugar and dates. Smooth bourbon with a noticeable but pleasant alcohol burn. Finishes with some butterscotch, vanilla oak and a touch of peat. Excellent. M - Thin to medium with silky carbonation. Drinks wonderfully and the alcohol is complimentary but never over the top. O - This has quickly become one of my favorite beers. Just bourbon drenched toffee perfection. Absolutely world class stuff.

Bottle 355 ml. Huge thanks to SourNotes for this one! Dark amber-brown. As expected, almost no head but beautiful fully lasting brown lacing. Aroma is dominated by bourbon with notes of oak, vanilla, caramel and smoke. Taste is also dominated by bourbon with woody notes, caramel, smoke, spices and vanilla. Strong warming alcohol Very nice sipper. This is a really good scotch ale. Bourbon may be a tad too present (it affects drinkability) but still bring this beer to another level. I would be interested to taste this beer with a couple of years under the belt to see if bourbon as mellowed and give the beer a better balance.

Pours a very dark amber color with a small amount of head. Huge sweet boozy aroma. Caramel malt, bourbon, smoke, and toffee aromas. Taste is very sweet but balances nicely with bourbon smokey flavor. Medium body with a very chewy mouthfeel. A noticable alcohol burn on the finish which leaves a sweet caramel malt flavor on the tongue along with some smoke too. Definitely a sipper with tons of bourbon flavor. Glad I finally got to try this.

Aroma is sweet with lots of malt, some caramel and sour cream. Flavour is really sweet with malt, caramel, toffee and vanilla. One can observe also the oaky notes here. Sticky and sweet stuff.

A tad too sweet still, even though alcohol balances the equation here without becoming too sharp (it is close to that though). And the barrell aromas are nice here, they just seem to build up the sweetness...

This is the beer that started it all for me. My brother gave me a bottle and said something along the lines of "This could change your life." Up to that point, I enjoyed Jack Daniels and various large batch brews. Then. I. Tried. Founders. Game over. Now, I pine for the day that I can "happen upon" the KBS or CBS, or make a pilgrimage to the brewery. And, Iíll have the beercation, soon. I had a bottle (capped 2/10) of Backwoods Bastard in a pint glass, slightly warmed by my hands and consumed over time. A: 4.0. I loved the gorgeous amber color, with hints of deep red. Very little head, some bubbles and a smell that made you pull your head towards the glass. S: 5.0. Where has this taste been all of my life? I was weaned on Jack Daniels and have recently found Makers Mark to be the ultimate in a good drink. But, to find a beer that provides the bourbon taste without being too boozy or too pretentuous? This changed everything. T: 5.0. Everything that I look for in a superior taste ... with each sip, I would pause my conversation, say "wow" and then relax for a moment. M 4.0. The taste the experience and the flavor made the mouthfeel darn near perfec. O: 4.5. After this beer, I started to listen to my brother, watch reviews online and pine for another "good beer." Why would anyone drink a Bud after having this type of beverage? (Iíll never know!) Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 11-05-2011 01:15:10

Pour from bottle into tulip. Dark red/brown with medium head. Boozy, boozy bourbon aroma caused me to wonder if this would taste like a shot and a beer. It was very smooth, but I thought the booze overwhelmed the first sips. Then the flavor came through: slightly syrupy sweetness, oak, vanilla, more bourbon, and some typical Scotch ale malt/peat. A very unique taste. Left me feeling warm and fuzzy.

Aged bottle from cellar - have had this fresh and remember enjoying it, but didnít take any notes. Pours an opaque deep reddish brown with a very thin off white head that doesnít stick around for the party. Aroma is a bit subdued, probably due to the age...some sweet bourbon, candied fruit and caramel in there. Flavor is nice and easy going...bourbon up front, definitely some dark fruit, brown sugar...and some alcohol is still around. Palate is full bodied but not overwhelming, as this one drinks quite easily at this point in its life. Nice offering - some day Iíd like to give it a try on tap!
