4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from Styles - thanks much. Pours dark ruby with a little tan head that fell quickly. Aromas of wood, vanilla, roasted malt, and maybe cherry. Full bodied with mild carbonation. It is smooth. Earthy. And there is cherry. The wood is subtle. Only a touch of heat in the finish. It is sort of bourbon chocolate. Really great sipper.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: NOV 14, 2011 Very happy that Founders is around these days in these parts. Deep red, slight but lasting head. Aroma is rich caramel, dark fruit, mostly cherry, and a hint of booze. Flavor matches the nose. Enjoyable stuff. The barrel is present, but adds a vanilla complement as opposed to overwhelming. Well done. RERATE: On draft at Mekong. More raisin notes coming through now, but still fantastic. I think this was a keg they had held for some time. Excellent stuff. No change to scores.

Mahogany pour with a slight cherry edge. small offwhite head. Aroma is vanilla, almond, hazelnut cream, some barrelled booze aroma, bourbon peat, caramel. Flavor is Smooooth caramel, not overly sweet or aggressive. Vanilla boozey wood with some creamy peaty notes as well. Finish is Boozey warmth and more wood. Incredibley smooth and complexly woody and boozey.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Reddish brown pour with not much head to speak of. Aroma is loaded with vanilla bourbon, caramel, maple syrup, peat, roast, almond-hazelnut, port wine, and subtle hints of dark fruit. Who knew bourbon could do such wondrous things to a scotch ale. Malt complexity is amazing in the nose. Flavor is bursting with caramel and further sweet malt incarnations, though the alcohol presence provides excellent balance to dispel any cloying nature. Bourbon is evident in the taste, but not as strongly as the aroma might suggest. This one is all about the malt... Palate is rich, oily, full, warming, and fine bubbled in its effervescence. Finish is warming and somewhat dry. I love this shit...

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark, clear brown with orange tints, small head. Aroma smells excellent; notes of bourbon, maple syrup, peat, honey, caramel, molasses, smoke, and some cashew and almond. Flavor isnít as aggressively sweet as I would have expected from the aroma. Notes of whiskey, wood, peat, smoke, caramel, and molassses are still prevalent, however. Palate is a bit disappointing; would have liked something more rich and silky sweet, but still not bad; the finish is somewhat of a redemption in that category. Still a damn tasty brew.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: DEC 1, 2012 Bottle - Pours deep brown with a huge rosy tan head thatís gone right away. Smells is graham crackers, butterscotch, and nice, sweet booze. Taste is caramelly sweetness with butterscotch and a nice boozy touch. Bitter finish--smooth and malty. Big and chewy with nice boozy warmth. Itís not bourbon-forward like I was expecting, but thatís okay. Itís also not terribly complex, but a nice dessert beer that is pleasant to sip on for a half hour or so.
Re-rate (11/30/12) - Wow have my tastes changed. This was super sweet and pretty hard to finish. Lots of toffee, bourbon and sugar.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle 355 ml
Appearance: pours as amber brown brew with mid plus creamy , slightly tanned top. Good lace presented.
Nose: Creamy wrap on oak aged brew , quiet caskey.
Flavor/Palate : mid , full bodied. Oak wood of barrel never lets you forget its presence, soft texture mellows things out. Alcohol is actually quiet dry here and considering other elements this is a good thing. Walls are laced with chewy caramel. Interesting blend.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
What a fine scotch ale this is! Pours a deep, muddy reddish brown with a thin cream-colored head. Aroma is pungent, and has a strong french oak tone, much like Glenlivet 15. Vanilla and caramel sweetness also climb up your nostrils. By this point, your tongue is well-prepared for the strong flavors of oak and whisky, and that powerful caramel malt sweetness that balances the alcohol.
Semi-creamy mouthfeel, just light enough to welcome the next sip. Potent flavors and double-digit ABV donít overwhelm, as theyíre somehow smoothed by other components. Simply fantastic - better than Breakfast Stout, and right up there with CBS as my favorite offering from Founders.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark brown with a thick off-white head that settles quickly. Aroma is of bourbon. Taste is great strong tast of bourbon but not over whelming. Warms as it goes down. Usually you give up some taste with a 10.2% ABV but not with this one. Very unique flavor. Quite tasty. Highly recommend.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2009 The most unique Ale I have tasted to date. For the Bourbon lover in all of us. Would rate higher if it had a bigger, longer lasting head, but makes up with a long after taste. Would like to do a blind tasting with a real bourbon and see that happens!
