COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big and delicious for your ’perty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Bottle, thanks to fata2683. Pours hazy garnet, extremely thin head doesn’t stick around; very soft carbonation. Saying the lacing is spotty is being kind. Nose is coconut/bourbon, red fruit, some malt; nice and woody. Flavors are rich, with more coconut and fruit, and a very slight brandyish character which is drying and keeps the beer in balance. Very nice and unexpected. Lovely.

He appeared in my glass dressed in rich murky browns, much like old musty wood that has seen many years of luscious bourbon aging in her round depths. A small head immediately fades into a khaki ringlet while a splotchy film tries and fails to cover her surface. A few swirls produce a decent showing of lace, but even better, a huge belch of bourbony proportions.

Mm… bourbon. A moment please… Thank you. Ok, and now we return to our regularly scheduled program.

Wood and spice, cinnamon and nutmeg specifically, are followed by candy apples, plums, raisins, and even more bourbon. Did I mention there is lots of bourbon in this beer? A flourish of vanilla extract and root leads into a warm tickle at the back of my nose right before I wrap thirsty lips around her liquid bounty. My first impression is of how well balanced his palate is. Bourbon sweetness and warmth is immediately evident, but not overpowering. Vanilla, cinnamon, and dry wood mingle atop giddy tastebuds, lingering long after each quaff. As he warms, the dryness spreads warm tendrils throughout my body, and each quaff is a soothing repeat of the last. Not as complex as some bourbon barrel aged ales, the apples, prunes, and raisins flitter in and out, weaving a dark fruit delight with apply sass throughout his palate. Exquisite, and even better, sessionable. I’ll take another one, please.

Founders, how I love thee, why aren’t you in Florida? Just remembering this beer is making me thirsty. Just as with all Founders beers, should you stumble across this particular option, take home a sixer, or 12pack. Why err on the side of less when you could take home more.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2010 09, courtesy of badnewsbeers, thanks! tried next to dirty bastard and this one takes the the cake. the bourbon adds a faint candy like caramel and cotton candy flavor to the aroma and taste. i’ve had this one several times, but waqs waiting to try it next to the regular to rate it. this is a well rounded maltinator, and the ba’ing adds very nicely. founders proves to know what they are doing, yet again. re-rate, one of my favorites. not a five, but just so damned reliable and so fuggin tasty.

(bottle) Mahogany body with thin, vanishing off-white head. Very aromatic: caramel, alcohol, wood, bourbon. Body is medium to full, oily, and soft carbonation - very nice. Flavor is strong with alcohol, but it remains smooth and very drinkable (minimal burn). Flavor is pretty sweet; vanilla, caramel, wood, bourbon.

A- Body appears to be a dark brown color. Pours with a minimal <1/2 finger head that immediately fades to a very thin collar and no lacing is left behind in the glass. When held up to the light one can see that this is actually. S- Sweet bourbon with an alcohol burn on the nostrils balances well with the dark malt profile offered by this Scottish ale. Sweet, like molasses and a chocolate presence added with bourbon sweetness and burn. Nice.. T-Upfront is a bit of roasted (but not quite bitter) malt that offsets the sweet caramel and bourbon flavors going on. The finish adds a touch of dark chocolate to what is already going on along with a bourbon alcohol burn. The bitterness is very well hidden the entire way through and the character of this beer is complex, slightly sweet, and very warm. P- Low to medium carbonation and a body made up mostly of somewhat thick, very smooth, caramel and dark malt. Goes down very easily. O- The more I acquaint myself to them the more I am loving Scotch Ales. This is a darn good one. The bourbon is a perfect compliment to this beer and I think its great. The alcohol is definitely not hidden...but it is not obnoxious either. Wonderful and definitely my favorite Founder’s brew! IMO, it easily Trumps Breakfast Stout and KBS. Wasn’t expecting this to be so good! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-15-2009 03:47:16
