4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 26, 2013 2011 vintage putting this bottle at about 8/9 months old. 12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Wasnít a fan of this fresh so I decided to age a bottle. Reviewed on 07-10-2012.
A - Dark red/brown clear body. One finger high light khaki head settles down to a patchy cap and thick edging. Swirling produces a huge and tight head. Decent lacing and retention but massive alcoholic legs. 4.0/5
S - Bourbon soaked figs and raisins, roasted malts, vanilla, brown sugar, and toffee. Really decadent and rich with the perfect balance between the bourbon and dark fruit. 4.5/5
T - Bourbon soaked dark fruits and loads of scotch ale notes. Vanilla, toffee, and brown sugar. The finish is pretty abrupt with a light lingering sweetness. Thereís also an odd bitterness after each sip that really goes against the sweet flavors. 3.5/5
M - Alcohol is well incorporated but it does warm the mouth at cellar temperature. Light to medium mouth feel with silky carbonation. 4.0/5
O - Age had does wonders on this beer. Crazy smooth and tasty. Not a fan of the bitterness in the aftertaste though. 3.88/5
2012 vintage, bottled on 10/12/12. 12 oz bottle into a Founders 15th Anniversary glass. Giving this a proper re-review since I now love this beer and style.
A - Pours a dark red/brown body that almost appears purple. This particular bottle is chill hazed with some floating protein particles. Iíve had many bottles of this batch that were crystal clear though. Three fingers worth of tan foam fades away into a patchy cap with attractive silky bubbles. Sticky lacing with modest retention.
S - Such an amazing and inviting aroma. Gobs of rich and sweet english toffee with layers of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak. Brown sugar drenched raisins. Such a fantastic bourbon presence.
T - Sweet toffee malts. Rich brown sugar and dates. Smooth bourbon with a noticeable but pleasant alcohol burn. Finishes with some butterscotch, vanilla oak and a touch of peat. Excellent.
M - Thin to medium with silky carbonation. Drinks wonderfully and the alcohol is complimentary but never over the top.
O - This has quickly become one of my favorite beers. Just bourbon drenched toffee perfection. Absolutely world class stuff.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Huge nose of mainly vanilla. Some hints of oak, slight bourbon, some molasses, tiny hints of dried fruits and hops. Stunning. Appearance is dark copper red with a tiny film of a head and laces around the glass. Sweet is pure oak and vanilla, some cocoa, sticky sweetness, bourbon, american hops and some slight maltiness. Long sticky finish with the oak running wild. Simply stunning.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: DEC 17, 2013 12 oz bottle. Pour is a deep mahogany, dense and a bit murky. A khaki head that diminishes but leaves lacing. Beautiful looking beer. Smell is crazy, big notes if caramel and bourbon, molasses, chocolate, vanilla, faint hops and a slight hint of oak. Definitely a booze note on the nose to let you know itís big. Taste is very complex, lots of caramel, roasted malt sweetness, bourbon, chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, even a sweet citrus note like pineapple maybe. I get some spice notes as well which I canít quite identify. Syrupy slick mouthfeel, like a big beer should be. Huge malt bomb with the bourbon barrel aging to add to the complexity. Alcohol content is only noticeable on the way down which warms your bones just a bit, which is a good thing in December when you live in New England! Awesome brew! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I donít taste the oak at all in this one. I tasted the bourbon only when it really warmed up. Really sweet and syrupy. Booziness is strong. I am not really a fan of scotch ales in general. This one was pretty good, but did not do the trick for me. Tasted medicinal and boozy at times without being able to find the oak flavor. Maybe it was the bottle I got? IDK I can tell it has a lot of flavor, but not necessarily the kind I like.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
I should have rated this before now. Pours dark red or amber with some light red to brown head. Nose is bad ass. Complex. Darker stone fruits, sweet, sugary, oak, sweet bourbon, spicy, bready malty bourbon, sticky malts, light booze. Flavor is sweet fruity, bready, and oaky bourbons. Really rich and velvety. medium sweet finish and medium full body. This is quite the awesome beer.

Not an overpowering barrel-aged taste. Nice ale base, good color, aroma. Worth trying.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
I wouldnít have expected this to be classified as a Scotch Ale. It has a crazy pungency, lots of dark fruit, an almost sour finish.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a dark brown with a slight purple hue to it. Very thin ring of white head that leaves very little lacing. Aroma is very sweet and malty with some alcohol. Not nearly as hot as I was expecting. A lot of dark fruits. Some fig, plum and cherry. Mouth is very creamy. A ton of vanilla and caramel with some dark fruits. Raisin is very prominent. The alcohol has a stronger presence, but still very subtle. Delicious beer.

4.1 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Amazing nose on this one, full of creamy butterscotch, bourbon notes, vanilla and sweet malt. Could smell this one all day. Fairly clear but dark mahogany color, with a quickly dissipating head. Tastes quite nice, buttery, vanilla, cherry, bourbon on the front end with a slightly hoppy hot aftertaste. Medium bodied and average carbonation. Seems like a great candidate for aging.
