Big and delicious for your ’perty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Appearance is brown with dissipating head but good lacing. Taste is wonderful vanilla and bourbon with little alcohol burn. Mouth feel is nice and lasting but not too thick. Founders beers have some of the best mouth feel around. This is a definite goto beer when I’m looking for something I know will put me in a good mood.

12 oz bottle thanks to Willrunforbeer for this. Somehow I haven’t rated this?? Wow, 2014 vintage, bottled 9/26/2014. Deep ruby color almost no head. Aroma is nice, mild bourbon over dark fruits (layers of plum, figs and raisins)

If you open this fresh I feel like the bourbon will help balance this. Right now this is crazy sweet. Almost to the point of cloying but not quite. I guess I needed to have a fresh sample and then a year old vintage. Right this second the dark fruit over powers the bourbon and gives this a "barley wine " like flavor. But don’t get me wrong... This is still wonderful. Bourbon and sweetness provides a ton of flavor. Another big plus in this brew is the alcohol is totally hidden. No hype here straight old school rate.

Bottle from the Dram Shop. Pours deep ruby with a fairly thin beige head. Nice smoky caramel aroma. A little pear drop too. The taste starts spicy before caramel, light smoke, wood and bourbon. Quite evident alcohol giving a warming glow. The alcohol lingers a little too much in the finish for me. Otherwise excellent.

Deepest ruby with a short tan head. Big peaty, whisky aromas. It’s pretty sweet, but somehow avoids being cloying and is remarkably drinkable. Sweet malts and dried fruit, oak, toffee, bourbon. Slightly boozy and really warming. Absolutely delicious.

Pours very dark brown with an off white head. Aroma is a strong peat smell. The taste is very peaty too, it’s like a proper Island whisky. Very nice.

12 oz bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear dark brown color with a red hue. Light beige head, not too much, with a thin layer retention. Aroma’s: sweet, toffee, treacle, bourbon, vanilla, hints of red fruit. Retronasal also sweetness, toffee, some alcohol, some hops, bourbon. Flavor is moderate to full sweet, toffee, bourbon. Alcohol feel is strong, warming mouth & throat. Fairly full bodied. Toffee and light bitterness in the finish.

Pours a very deep red to copper body, with a beige head that laces the glass well. Complex, sweet, fruity and very strong aroma of overripe generic and tropical fruits, dark dried fruits, bourbon, slightly roasted malt, sweet caramel and chocolate. Strong flavour of alcohol, overripe generic fruits, red berries, wood, vanilla, bourbon, burnt sugar and caramel. Tropical fruits and dark dried fruits in the back. Moderate sweet taste with a moderate bitter and long-lasting finish. Close to full body, but still feels a bit thinner than expected, also far too boozy and dry, all of which I assume is caused by the barrel ageing. But of course, a nice one.

341ml January 2014 Bottle from trade. Aroma: bourbon, sweet caramel, molasses, vanilla, woody. Quite earthy. App: brown as coca cola, small beige head, ok retention, nice lacing. Taste and palate: full body, really smooth, medium sweetness, dark red fruits in mouth, alcohol and light bitter finish. Overall: wow! Wasn’t expecting much from this one as I’m not a great fan of scotch ale. By its aroma, I expected something overly sweet but this is so well balance that we can easily accept the sweetness. Wow! Awesome! Scotch ale at its best.

Remarkable. Decided to chill a bottle from the ?cellar? (low 60s) waiting since Nov (9mo) and enjoyed this evening. (previous bottle from the same purchase ?fresh?, and draft last year, unrated)Aroma mostly malt and barrel, beautifully blended, draws you into the dark with . Appearance is perfect imho, deepest ruby red needing significant backlight to detect anything but darkness. Flavor is remarkable, imho (again) one of the best examples of a perfect blend of ale and bourbon barrel.Ten minutes after finishing and I?m wishing I?d chilled the rest of my supply - this is dangerous good... I might buy out supply when it resurfaces this fall...
