COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Big and delicious for your ’perty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

All the hoppy bite of the regular bastard are mellowed out by the vanilla sweetness from the oaky aging. Very sweet and malty with an alcohol/syrupy finish. Very good.

Flaske fra vinmonopolet. Mørk rød/brun, klar farget. Moderat karbonert med en lav skumtopp. Smaker whiskey, røyk, eik , bourbon, jord, kirsebær. Fantastisk god

Dark red-amber color. Pours a tan, creamy head. Nice, frothy lace patterns. Caramelized sugar, bread, lots of toffee and light Scotch in the nose. Tastes of caramelized sugar, Bourbon, bready malts, peat, warming alcohol, light nuttiness, oak and toffee. Hops show up in the finish as it warms. Tasted back to back with a Dirty Bastard. Less hoppy, notes of the DB, but this has more depth and is better. I don't know if there could be a better Scotch Ale imo. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brown/red with small tan head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, absinth, spice and some oak. Very slick palate. Aftertaste is rich, bourbon, oak, spice, alcohol, floral hops and a dry finish. Overall: Very nice! bourbon is too dominant.

Once again, Founders managed to blow my mind and bust my nut. (Yes, the results were messy, but totally worthwhile.) If there’s a more complex Scotch Ale than Backwoods Bastard, I haven’t tasted it. We’ll get to that. This brew is sex in a glass - brown-mahogany color and a lacy head that’s impressive for the high ABV. Aroma has plenty of whiskey aromas to keep you occupied. Oak, syrup, peat, smoke, toasted malt, and booze. You taste what you smell, but you also get vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, coffee, dark fruit, and nuts. Mouthfeel has a lot of alcohol warmth. Don’t drink this beer early in the afternoon like I did. I was tired for the rest of the day. Worth it. Backwoods Bastard is a masterpiece.

12oz bottle. Nice aroma of oak, not too much. Tannish head that disappears quickly. Very nice reddish-brown color. Awesome flavor! Perfect balance of oak, sweetness, & malt. Full bodied, and carbonation lends it a very creamy mouthfeel. Terrific example of a Scotch Ale, maybe a little strong for style?

12 oz. bottle from Vintage Estates Wine and Beer in Boardman, Ohio, poured into a snifter. Thin, quickly disappearing head, but the beer is a really pretty deep red color. Smells like the kind of bourbon I’d never be able to afford: strong whiskey, vanilla, wood. Taste blew me away. Vanilla, lots of caramel, whiskey, cedar. It’s so damn smooth! Goes down way too easy for a 10.2% beer. Makes me wish I had bought a whole 4-pack. I’ve never ventured too far into the barrel-aged end of craft beer, but if this is any indicator, my bank account is about to take a beating. One of the best beers I’ve ever had.
