Big and delicious for your ’perty mouth. Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts. A bit of earthy spice and a scintilla of dark cherries. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Goose Island pint glass. The color is a deep maroon with about finger and a half of foamy brownish head. The smell is malty with some nice bready aroma and an interesting caramel aroma. Things seem to be well balanced even here in the nose. The taste is sweet malts and some bourbon barrel overtones. Some oak flavor is there throughout the flavor. Some nice bitterness that goes back into a sweet malt flavor. The feel of this beer is bold and complex with plenty of flavor to dwell over. Bitterness it countered by some sweet malt and things seem to battle back and forth but always seems to even things out toward the end.

Deep black with a red tinge, reasonable light tan head. Looks really dense. The aroma is intense - big whiffs of bourbon and nut with additional leather and molasses scent. What a complex and interesting beer. I taste a slight hit of coffee initially, with a tight smack of bitterness. This is followed by a big bourbon hit, supported by woody notes and tastes - like - leather - smells flavour. The alcohol isn’t well hidden, in fact this burns like a spirit would. Not as dense as I’d like for the style, but still pretty heavy. No carbonation to speak of and the beer fades away on the back of a burning sensation that flows right through to the stomach.

2012 bottle. Smells slightly oxidized with some caramel, booze, and oak. Taste is very nice: warming alcohol, caramel, toasted oak, vanilla, slight soy. Nearly flat. Tasty all in all but might have aged too long ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours dark brown, murky and cloudy. Smells like bourbon! Taste is sweet with complex flavours – vanilla, wood, caramel, roasted malt, bourbon. Very nice indeed. A good bottle to split with a friend.

On tap at Bishops Arms Folkis, October 2014. A bit hazy dark amber with a medium head. Really a lot of malt in this one. Also dried fruit, caramel, some nuts, vanilla and light bourbon. Sweet and with warming alcohol. The mouthfeel was thick. A nice beer. I wonder what Gandalf would think about this one?

---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"DAMN!!! Incredible aroma (9.5) of vanilla, bourbon, slight peet, sweet malt and a touch of hops. since DB is a more complex scotch ale, more flavors were present in the barreled version and the bourbon was done very very well. i LOVE this beer and will look for more! thanks John. loved it!"
