4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Serving: Draft at Fire Works Leesburg. It pours a dark brown color with a thin, light tan head. The nose is rich and vinous with notes of bourbon and stone fruit. The flavor has a good bit of bourbon with sweet, dark caramel, fruitcake, fig, and dried cherries. A slight earthiness lasts start to finish. Rich in body with a good bit of drying alcohol on the back end. Potent for sure, the alcohol is obvious from start to finish and very warming on the way down. Perfect for cold winter days.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tasted from bottle. Pours a very dark brown with beige head that quickly dissipates leaving some good lacing. Great looking beer. Aroma is huge. Robust caramel and sweet notes mixed with bourbon. Some roasted earthy notes. Taste definitely does not disappoint. Starts off sweet with big caramel and toffee taste. Followed by bourbon whiskey tastes that blends so well with the sweet caramel taste. Just a hint of bitterness. Very well balanced and complex beer. Really hides the alcohol well. A lot of times I'm not a fan of bourbon barrel aged beers because I think the bourbon dominates the taste too much. Founders has done it incredibly well. Excellent beer.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
sweet woody aroma with caramel, smoke, maple and whisky in there as well..very dark brown liquid with dissipating head..taste ..wow..BIG beer my first impression is it tastes like marshmallow ambrosia salad if youre familiar.,vanilla, caramel, cream and plenty of unusual fruits (pineapple? coconut?)smoke and whiskey if youre not.,balanced by tingly hops and carbonation.yet slick, creamy and sticky also...very tasty and very unusual..fruity maple aftertaste lasts..overall I hate íscotch ales í in general but the other flavors balancing this one makes it very satisfying

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2013 bottle. Cloudy, murky barrel; sticky tan lace.
Smells like an open cigar box, and much more barrel than in last year's batch. Can't get over how different this is from the 2012. Oaky, mild boozy sweetness, plenty of bourbon character, quick tinge from the alcohol at the end. Improves significantly as it warms.
Mouthfeel is reasonably creamy, carbonation is dialed in nicely. This is a tasty beverage, though the 2011 vintage (when fresh) is still tops for me.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20
The aroma is malt forward. Roasted malts, caramel, bourbon and subtle hints of dark red fruit. Pours a ruby brown with an off-whithe ring and no lacing. The taste is rich and malty. Roasted malts, caramel, bourbon, dark fruit notes, with an alcohol finish and lingering aftertaste. Medium body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is somewhat creamy initially, but is curtailed by a "warm" alcohol finish. Overall, this is a great sit-by-the-fire-on-a-winters-night-sipper. Well, crafted and enjoyable. Should age well. (I, sadly, missed the smokieness.)

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark brown pour with minimal head. So much going on with the nose! Big aromas of smokey scotch and roasted malt with bourbon and oak notes. Flavor is big smokey malts upfront, with notes of caramel. The bourbon barrel comes through in the finish wonderfully. Very complex. The abv is extremely well hidden too. Really great beer!

Strong bourbon aroma and flavor from beginning to end. Surprisingly smooth for 10.2% alcohol. One of my favorite scotch ales. Malty bourbon flavor from start to finish. A truly great beer.

Had this last year and remembered loving it. Poured into a snifter..
A: Oaky. Boozy. Molasis note. yes..... not bad but not very complex.
A: Pours decently thick especially watching the bubbles rise. Little head. Nice semi transparent brown color.
T: First thought is something like oh my god this is amazing. As the beer finishes the thought continues only more so. If ever a beer was a 10 in taste this is it. Molasses sweetness. Dates. Alcohol cuts through but is more warming and surprising that aggressive. Oaky. Boozy. Finish has a huge bit of malt which is crazy for a beer this strong. Goes down with almost a brandy-like warmth. Just insane. yeah thereís some carmel in there as well when the beer warms.
P: Feels smooth on the palate. Carbonation is on the money. Flavor development is also amazing. Goes through many different stages. As mentioned before the alcohol cuts though but not in a bad way, more to remind you that itís there.
This beer is simply amazing. The tastes is complex, the palate is great. The weird thing is it doesnít smell that great. Oak and boozy are really the big smell notes. But this one hits where it counts: a must try. (How can it be an overall 20 when the smell is a 7? IDK the sum of the parts is less than the whole?)
