Aroma is bourbon, malt, and some carmel. Pours a copperish brown with little or no head. Taste is bourbon and malts with very little carbonation. There is a little warmth that makes for a smooth drink.

Aromas of oak, bourbon, and vanilla, maybe some cherries. Dark brown with slight tan head. Tastes oakey in a good way, very smooth. Wow, this is a treat.

Tap sample at source 09/2013 and bottle 11/2013. Sweet stuff, Werther’s Echte meets coupe brésilienne, old bubble gum hops, stale vintage ale - and yet this is enjoyable and none too heavy. Vegetable, leafy, ashen, smoky hints. All poured next and on top of each other, compared to a few Belgian trappist yeasts this does not have much hypotactic depth, more like paratactic complexity.

aroma is powerful. sweet malt and some smoky scotch aromas as soon as i pour this bottle. appearance is clean & pretty, almost a ruby bronze. Taste follows the sweet scotchy aromas. sweeter than i recall prior tastes. maybe a tinge of alcohol heat on the finish but otherwise very well hidden. palate is lighter than you might expect from such a complex brew but not offensive or disappointing. overall outstanding. I enjoy the hunt more than the actual consumption - but that happens with these type beers (the ones that trend on social media when released). Also - this is a style i don’t often drink, so it is refreshingly different to try a malty beer when i tend to pick the hoppy option.

UPDATED: NOV 29, 2013 An incredibly complex beer. Aromas of rich woods, caramel and autumn spices. Rich caramel is most present, followed by an infinite array of other flavors. Oak, nutmeg, cider, mixed grains, dark fruits, hints of chocolate, bourbon... The list goes on. It all blends perfectly into a smooth, complex and delicious brew.

Can?t believe I haven?t rated this yet. May have a scrap of paper with it on it somewhere. Barrel aged fo sho! Great scotch/whiskey aroma with notes of brown sugar, vanilla, and some awesomeness. Great beer.

10/15/2011. From bottle. Pours deep amber to copper color with a tan head. Aromas of bourbon mostly but with malt, caramel and hints of smoke showing through. Near perfect balance and very complex. Spicy flavors with bourbon, caramel and hops. Definitely a keeper.

Bourbon, bourbon everywhere! And a little sugar. Alcohol is certainly evident on the tongue.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a dark brown with red tints that has a very nice head and lingering lacing. Nose is of bourbon against a molasses, dark malt and chocolate background. Carbonation is average and the mouthfeel is a light medium. I was expecting a full medium body, but the lightness helps bring the bourbon flavor forward. The 10.2% alcohol is well hidden in this very well balanced beer. Bourbon against the molasses and dark malt backbone is the taste profile. Finishes with bourbon and malt sweetness with a touch of oak and a nice alcohol burn that lingers along with the oak. Another outstanding Founder’s offering that takes Old Ale brewing to a new level.
