4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12 oz. bottle from A Southern Season, Chapel Hill, NC.
Ar: Complex aroma with dominant notes of pit fruit, cherries, slight smokiness, and vanilla.
Ap: Pours a deep brown-red, a beautiful ruby hue when held to the light. Small manila head leaves great lace.
T: Sweet, complex flavors going on here. Lots of date, dried black fig, and a bit of cherry. Booze on the finish brings to mind Irish whiskey. A touch of toffee and chocolate on the finish as well.
P: Thick, creamy body with pretty mild carbonation.
O: I had been wanting to try this for some time, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Big, burly, maybe a bit cloying in its richness but damned good nonetheless.

Bottle. Cola coloured, thin cappuccino coloured head. Huge malt aromas combined with bourbon, vanilla, cherry hazelnut and chocolate. Initial alcohol flavour that doesn't detract, leading into bourbon, vanilla, cherry, spice, hazelnuts and a lick of smoke. The sweetness is bought back in check by spicy hops. Beautifully smooth. Great beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured from tap into tulip. Pours a clear dark brown wig minimal head. Aroma is typical scotch ale, but somehow richer and more vibrant while still being reserved. Taste follows in the same vein. Very nice and warming on a winter’s night.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Boozy aroma and a flavor of Scotch Ale smothered in oak and bourbon. For the alcohol content this is a very smooth ale. Excellent choice to kick off the Blizzard of ’16.

Aroma: sweet bourbon with some underlying maltiness; Appearance: dark ruby/amber with off white head that billows and then dissipates quickly; Taste: lots of bourbon but more sweet than boozy; almost egg nog-like with its taste and richness; Palate: heavy with long, very sweet finish; Overall: delicious; would definitely buy again - many times.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aromas of caramel, oak, vanilla, smoke, deep malts, nougat, and subtle peanut butter. Pours a very dark hazy brown with large lacing. Taste is big caramel, bourbon, nougat, peanut butter and leather upfront. Mid palate brings notes of oak, peanut brittle, toffee, candied molasses, slight smoke, sticky malts and a slight aged wort malt characteristic. Finishes smooth with vanilla, oak, latte and bourbon notes. Overall, very impressive rendition of a scotch ale with a pleasant bourbon twist.

355ml bottle from Good Spirits Co, Glasgow (£4.80):
Another excellent Founders beer, one of their best yet. Tonnes of complexity with good roasted malts, dark fruits & sweetness apparent throughout. Easy to drink despite the strong abv., the balance is excellent too & it’s definitely a beer I’ll be on the look out for again.
