Had this on Draft at Armsby Abbey stoutfest. Listed as an old ale and not a stout, but it kind of walks the line between the two styles. This was the surprise of the event. I absolutely love this beer. A nice maple sweetness in the background with light roasted notes perfectly balanced and amazingly thick and creamy. One of the best beers ive ever had. A+ founders.

Had on tap at the stable in St Louis. Pours black with a medium tan head. Smells of roasted malt and chocolate, with hints of alcohol and vanilla. Taste does not represent the alcohol in the aroma. hints of maple, chocolate and light alcohol. Has a medium to light body. Overall an excellent beer.

Had on tap at the armsby abbey stoutfest, malty sweetness shines, tastes oaked, vanilla, palate is much more complex than the nose, licorice, anisette

Growler courtesy Jim - thanks! Dark cola color with a slight tan head fading to the sides of the glass. Aroma is oak, light maple, sweet almost smokey malt, vanilla, and perhaps faded hops. Taste is licorice, sweet raisin/malt, molasses, light hop bitterness toward the finish, and slight alcohol. Clean and smooth feel in the mouth. Unique presentation for the style and very tasty. Great beer.

sampled at last summer’s Michigan Brewer’s Fest - Pours near black and smells of roast malt and chocolate. This full bodied brew tastes of sweet, roast chocolate malt and a touch of hops. It comes off as a tasty blend of flavors that doesn’t seem as high in alcohol as it is. Very good.

Tasted on 3/16/11 on draft at Local Option. Pours oil black with an average tan head that slowly recedes to thin lace. The nose is primarily maple, but there is also a good amount of roasted coffee malt, anise, chocolate, and molasses. The flavor is sweet maple and molasses up front, moving to coffee, roasted malt, anise, and more maple and chocolate on the back. The body is full with light carbonation and a long anise and maple finish.

Thanks to a very good friend of mine for this hook up. 16oz flip top into my Rochefort glass...The beer pours a very dark brown bordering on black, looks pretty oily. Pours with no carbonation with a little light tan head...The aroma has a ton going on, bouron (lots of alochol in general), vanilla, prunes, brown sugar, bread. Its a pretty good combination, light slight burnt alcohol finish...The taste is not as good as the aroma, but its pretty decent again mostly alochol and vanilla on the taste with some sugar and burnt coffee finish...The feel is on the lighter side, light warm finish. Overall, this was pretty good for an old ale. Super glad I was able to try this but to me this is one of those beers that gets scored higher than it deserves due to the rarity. A good experience but not outstanding.

Draft. Deep brown body, almost opaque. Short, tan head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, roasted malts chocolate, cherry cola and raisins. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. The finish is moderately sweet, lightly bitter and lightly acidic. Medium to full body, creamy texture and soft carbonation. The sweet molasses, chocolate and sugary tastes are balanced with some bitter roastiness and tartness in the finish. The warming alcohol is nicely muted in the taste and aroma.
