A - Black body with dark brown edges. 2 fingers of dark khaki foam on top. S - Roasted malts, pungent green hops, pine needles, hints of coffee. T - Follows the nose with roasted barley, bittering green hops upfront, pine resin, notes of coffee, the roasted malts provide some sweetness but there is a dryness spicyness that keeps it in check. Finishes dry and bitter. M - Medium full mouthfeel, creamy carbonation, dry finish. The roast is not heavy and the hops are the main focus. Good mouthfeel with some spicy character. Good stuff. The Black IPA pours a dark plumb to black with a thick tan head that lasts a long while. The aroma is earthy, floral and molasses. The flavor is resin, earthy, floral and molasses. Overall this is a pretty decent beer.

Draft to pint at Founders. Looks good; a translucent dark cola with beige head that slowly dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; dark malt, hops, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a solid mouthfeel. Hops are bitter and piney. A good Black IPA.

Hmm like a Russian Imperial Stout, but more like a black IPA. Good balance of hops and rosted malts. A surprisingly clean flavor not overly alcoholic as expected, really smooth and tasty.

Very dark very roastie flavor... Not enough hop presence to add a little balance to this beer. Tastes like a dark roastie version of the new recipe reds rye pa.. Just all right ... Hovering in the middle of the pack like so many others~ ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and shaker served, showing a ruby highlighted, semi-opague, black/brown color, with a creamy, tan head, and ribbony cling to the lacing. The aroma was some sweetness, florals, citrus & fruit, some resin, and a hint of vanilla? Roastiness and some earthiness were more secondary and underlying notes. The flavor offered a lingering, citrusy astringent, & earthy hop bitterness. Less than medium bodied, a little thin on the palate, but a bit of silkiness to the mouthfeel, and pleasantly dry finishing.

2013-09-08. Black body with a nice tan head and lace. 4+ Aroma is pleasant with leafy green hop character and light roast with chocolate accents. Flavour is pleasant, green leafy hops and moderate bitterness throughout, some roast. Smooth average plus bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Pretty solid, it lets the hops shine past the roast which is sort of the point of a black IPA to me. On tap at Slows, Detroit

Draft on tap at the brewery (Grand Rapids, MI). Pours a deeper dark blackish pour, well hazed with a bit of a ruby brownish glow on the bottom and edges. A frothy tannish head atop stays firmly sized, sticks around, laces well. Aromas throw gentle toastiness, biscuit, and florals. Some grapefruit, gentle pine, and florals show a decent to medium hop bitterness. As it warms, more firm to strong grappefruit rind, juice, and lemon. A bit toasty, resiny and pine elements present themselves. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied, crisp and strong grapefruit bitter feel. Rind, juice, and florals present a good hop presence. A bit toasty, light biscuity feel. Smooths out more into the middle with a bit of body, still a firm citrusy and fresh hop presence. Backend shows grapefruit juice, piney resin elements work in with florals, a firm dryness. A touch of body and malt presence. Really fresh and constructed well, well balanced with that very pleasant hoppy bitter slant holding firm throughout. A darker malt feel gives it a bit of toast and body, gentle thickness but the hops still take this one home. Finish is dry, bitter, lingerinh hop presence hangs on. Not overwhelming or too much. Just right. Really nice fresh Black IPA.
