| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 16, 2007 Bottle - pours dark brown/black with mahogany highlights with a quickly dissipating khaki head. Aroma of roasted grains, chocolates and very similar to a spicy porter aroma as others have noted. Flavor is also similar to a porter though with the emphasis on chocolate notes and a good hoppy bite that gives way to a dry rather spicy finish that lingers well with the medium palate. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 14, 2007 Dark brown pour with a large and persistent beige head. Aroma is a nice porterish-roasted mix of chocolate and dark malts. Taste is a smooth and delicous mix of chocolate, rye, coffee, and other roasted malts plus enough hop bitterness to make it really good. Nice tingly sensation to complement the smoothness. Founders scores again! masonjer (564), Holt, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 9, 2007 This is a very interesting brew. Pours deep brown almost black. Taste is roasty, chocolate, balanced by big hops, citrus and rye. Nice dry finish. I think they did a pretty good job with this one. hotstuff (3183), Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 8, 2007 Bottle courtesy of jsquire. Tan medium sized head that was mostly lasting, minimal lacing, opaque, visible carbonation on sides of glass, and a black hue. Nose was malty, chocolate, roasty, rye, hoppy, and sweet. Flavor was malty, toffee, coffee, rye, roasty, burnt, and mildly hoppy. Mouthfeel was mostly smooth with a slight tingle. Medium body. Nice brew and nicely done. Worthy of a try! Aroma of bitter chocolate and pine hops. Taste of rye bread. Surprisingly balanced finish. Very different. Very well done. BeerVirgin72 (820), Pataskala, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 31, 2007 Had on tap at Brews in Grandville. Poured dark brown with nice cream colored head. Left some great lacing on glass. Flavor was pretty tame for a stout, I thought. Some roasted malts, some rye, of course, some coffee and even a hint of chocolate...Blended well, and definitely drinkable...Not as hoppy as some I have had... Cliff (366), Avon Lake, Ohio, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 28, 2007 On tap at the Beer Engine. Poured a very dark brown bordering on black with a thin off-white head. Aromas of spice and a bit of earthy bitterness. Good flaovr, roasted malts, but none of the bitterness associated with them. Crisp and a bit dry. Almost like a rye swartzbeer, but still quite drinkable. i enjoyed this different style of beer.
