The aroma is pretty damn hoppy if you don’t let the dark malts get in the way. Pine needles, chocolate, coffee. The flavor is a dark roasted coffee, rye, nuts, pine/citrus hops, charcoal. Tastes pretty darn good. The palate is really thick and creamy, has that dry charcoalesque feel as well, bitter hop oils. I have this beer a bunch of times but never rated it. I’m glad I tried it again. Surely makes the day go by smoothly. Slick (1962), Thief River Falls, Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Oct 29, 2005 Opaque black color, small tan head that faded quickly leaving nothing behind. The aroma was roasty malt with some coffee and maybe a bit of chocolate in there as well, but i could be wrong.I gotta say i like it.Roasty, coffee upfront some slight sweetness in the beginning then it changes to some mild hops and a slight bitterness.Very pleasant brew and easy to drink, not exactly an all time great but very doable IMO. austinpowers (2828), New York, New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 21, 2005 Really really roasty. Burnt, charred. Other than that, there’s not much rye flavor as it’s a pretty mild ingredient. Quality brew from a solid brewer. barleyPops (1081), Quad-Cities, Illinois, USA

It’s sweet and malty with a nice roastiness, a slight touch of rye and a slight bitter hoppiness. Full bodied, smooth and slightly dry. Dorwart (1832), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2005 Large frothy light beige head of fine bubbles. Reduces and leaves a thick sheet of lacing. Light carbonation. Dry roasty aroma with a good helping of roasted grains, rye and a bit of nuttiness. Color is a a very dark brown boardering on black. Creamy and roasty palate with a bit of coffee and carbon. Slightly chalky and dry. Finish leaves a lingering dry coffee aftertaste. Some bitternes at the finish. Some pretty good stuff. Thanks to Dogbrick for this one. DrnkMcDermott (1873), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 16, 2005 Bottled, while watching those "Good Guys Wear Black!" Interesting smell out of the bottle, perhaps of a cream stout with molasses stirred in. Pours deep brown, becoming black in the glass, with a thinning cola head. Taste is a deep porter, with the rye softening any possible roastiness. Can’t pick up any specifics in the hops with all this lip-smacking malt around. Yet it’s nicely dried but not soured, and there’s a touch of walnut torte in the finish. The alcohol refuses to make itself known, which can cause you trouble down the road. Much more complex than I can describe, and a fine beer. "Black" is the new "wit!" Oh, by the way: <font face=Impact, Arial, Helvetica size=36px><center>SOX WIN! SOX WIN!! SOX WIN!!! Aroma is very hoppy, mostly pine, and rye bread. Flavor starts hoppy before the rye and coffee comes in. The end is dark chocolate. Great complexity in this one. I’m picking up different tastes in almost every sip. Full-body, thick and chewy, long dry finish.
