This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2007 Wow. Looks like a stout...nearly black with a thick brown head that leaves a heavy lacing. Wonderful aroma of chocolate, caramel, and rye. Even tastes a bit like a stout. Deep and flavorful up front with notes of chocolate and coffee. Finishes slightly bitter where the rye is evident. A superb beer.

Very dark brown beer, frothy tan head. Softish palate, semi dry. Dark chocolatey malt, minerals and a little rye spice. Tiny bit of hop towards the softish finish. Nicely joined up and highly drinkable. A rich dark beer without ever being heavy like a stout. Nice!

Bottle shared by James, thanks! Pours near black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of dark grains with some rye and a hint of toffee. Flavor starts with dark grains and rye with a hint of bitterness in the finish.

A complex beer. A definite rye and dry roasted malt aroma and taste. A nice punch of spice, but not over bearing.

Wow - screwtop cap! Thanks MisterP. There is the aroma of roasty malts, maybe light smokiness and chocolate cake. The black rye pours dark chestnut amber with a light tan head. The flavor of a light stout roasted malts on an easy palatable body with light roasted after taste. For a few years old it has lost some of the hops but still tastes good.

Bottle generously provided by Josh - thanks! Pours a dark brown with a thinnish tan head. Aroma is faded, earthy hops, rye and sweet malt, biscuit, and slight raisin sweetness at the end. Taste is dominated by the rye malt and sweetness (brown sugar?) with some bitter hops lingering. Clean finish with some sweet raisin notes. Despite the absence of fresh hops this is an enjoyable beer and I’m glad to have a bottle.

Thanks to STFun for the bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Roasted grain, toffee, spicy rye and chocolate in the aroma. Nice malt body, toffee, some bitterness and a touch of the rye. This is a really nice brew.

Appearance: Murky dark brown with garnet corners and a large 3 finger dirty khaki crown that exhibits loads of retention and lacing. Smell: Rye, roast malt, chocolate, and a touch of orange zest. Taste: Roast malt, molasses, a minty rye, and an underlying hersheys syrup and coffee profile. Delicious. Mouthfeel: Medium to thick bodied, chewy, filling. Drinkability: The body is the only thing holding it back from scoring higher in this department. Fantastic beer! Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-12-2009

A: Pours dark as night like a stout or porter. There was an average head made up of tiny bubbles, but little to no lacing. S: Very nice aromas with this brew. You could smell the nice spiciness of the rye. There were also notes of milk chocolate, and the sweetness of caramel. T: Wonderful brew. It knocks the socks off of red’s rye. There is a wonderful balance of spicy charred malt and malty sweetness. The taste is as complex as the smell. Bitter sweet chocolate, mild spice and coffee dominate. There is an underlying brown sugar like sweetness that helps to pull it all together. M: Medium bodied and very smooth.

On tap at the Founders. Awesome Black color with a dark tan head. Taste of hops and rye. Seems to taste better as it warms up.
