This beer will surprise you with a big hop flavor and a toasty sweet aroma. Pours black from the chocolate and de-bitterized black rye malts. This ale is medium bodied and is well flavored with hints of toffee, nutty undertones and a dry crisp finish.

pours a dark brown, almost black color. aroma is roasted chocolate, and a nice hop note. flavor is much like the aroma, with the added note of tabacco. good smooth body. this is not bad, but the red rye id better i think.

Itís a dark rye beer, not as hoppy as I was expecting (I figured it would be bordering on black IPA levels) but the malt bill isnít as complex as Iíd hoped. Still tasty, but lacked great nuance (I wanted something like Bellís/SN collaboration from last year but with a hint of Rye).

From the 12 fl. oz bottled on 12/22/2014. Must have been a nice Christmas gift for somebody. Deep dark brown to almost jet black pour with a tan head that sticks around. Aroma of dark malts, coffee grinds, rye grain, and earthy and piney hops. The body is medium and oily. The taste had a pleasant grainy presence followed by a more assertive earthy hop finish.

Bottle from the Malt Shoppe. After having an interesting sample from Hank-the-Founders guy at Whirlyball in the freezing cold during that awful Christmas week. Very dark brown pour with a beige head. Great streaky lacing. Aroma has chocolate and nuts and light caramel with some spices. Taste brings much more subtle notes; tangy spices, bakers chocolate, some nut, some black malts. The grainy rye shoots in and out. Medium bodied, super smooth and creamy, without much alcohol presence. Finishes tangy spicy with some bitterness from chocolate and nut, and bone dry. Cannot believe never rated it over the years - and happy Founders re-released it, as this is good ... 14.8

12oz bottle, poured into a pub glass. The Initial aroma is a mellow toffee that fades to a smokey, roasted nuts, cocoa powder. toffee. and cola blend with an undertone rye, earth. and a toffee note that strengthens late. The beer is opaque with a cola brown hue and a tan, foamy soft head that has an abundant, thick ring and a full, sudsy surface with an above average, dense web lace. It almost looks like a heady stout. The taste is a medium / medium high bitter and sweet - fairly well balanced. The beer is oily sticky, with a foamy, soft zip of a carbonation and a medium body. Light flavors of licorice underlie the smoked grains, nuts, and toffee primary notes. It finishes dry, and crisp with a light ash quality. A dry and astringent cocoa powder lingers lightly in the cloying chocolate and nut aftertaste.

Bottle into snifter glass, deep opaque black color with dark tan head. Aroma notes of roasted malt, smoke, dark chocolate, light coffee, rye and citrus hops. Taste adds caramel, herbal rye notes (mint, liquorice), black coffee, pine, grapefruit and earthy hop bitterness. Medium body, low-moderate carbonation, dry, creamy with roast rye bitter finish. The rye is strong and so are the hops, lots happening in this dark ale.

12 oz. bottle from 4 pack (picked up at Twin Liquors- Parmer and Mopac), served in a shaker- poured solid black color when held to a light source, 2mm tan head formed with several frog eyes upon the surface. Aroma of an overly dried to the edge of burning it rye, molasses, black pepper, and hunger- NICE! Hits the mouth with a medium body, malt is very forward and itís delightful with the roast, middle has a cloying bitterness that takes it to the end. I could drink a case of this tonight- if only I could...
