Ypsilanti sample. Pitch black pour, elevating a foamy tan head that lasts surprisingly well. Beany, fennel reminiscent roasty and vegetal nose offers a lot to think on. Light yet sufficient carbonation, full bodied, well done in that regard as barrel-aged impies tend to be pretty thinned out. Pleasant and obviously well brewed, yet frankly, I’d rather have the regular imperial stout. This tastes pretty much as the commercial description puts it, in other words, I don’t see what sets it apart from another bourbon impy, oily and sweet with great doses of hampering roastiness, ponctuated by woody vanilla suggestions. While the malt appears well extracted, but coffee imparts a rather raw vegetal feel and and at the same time enhances the cheap alcohol feel which is really too bad as the "barreling" was not overdone.

Snagged a 4 pack. Can’t help but compare this to the Breakfast Stout sans the oatmeal aspect of it. A jet black(almost tar-like) pour. A real strong aroma of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. A thick flavored beer with lots of chocolate and coffee. A solid offering

This is a serious beer. Pours almost black with a soft brown head, like the inside of a 3 muskateers bar. Tastes like a chocolate/tobacco milk shake. Very heavy, nice lacing. I can slightly taste the alcohol (its a 10% beer) and wish it was a little more subdued. A really great, tasty beer, through and through.

On Tap. Bridge View Tavern. Nice dark brown pour with a nice head. Roasty flavor And bitter hops round out this great brew. Coffee spice with a bit of pine. Very refreshing.

On tap at the Founders Brewhouse in July 2009. Pours a deep black with a rich, high mahogany head. Plenty of lacing is it goes down. The smell is uber strong with plenty of bourbon, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and a slight woodiness. The same notes come out in the taste, with a little bit more of the barrel-aging present in the taste. The mouthfeel is thick and viscous, yet still quite creamy. Alcohol is hidden well. Drinkability would be the one drawback, as it is quite good, but nowhere near as good at making me compulsively sip as something like CBS. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 10-05-2009

This one poured a very dark brown with a very minimal beige head. Aroma was lots and lots of oak and vanilla notes from the bourbon, along with dark roasted coffee too. Flavor was a great balance of smokey whiskey and thick roasted malts and dark chocolate. Excellent stuff, definately up there with KBS

Wow, what an incredible surprise to find this beer! Had on draft at Brew’s Cafe in Granville, OH. A pub exclusive only at the brewery and here at Brew’s. The pour was opaque black with a thick brown head on top. The aroma was cocoa and the flavors were complex with cocoa, vanilla, caramel and oak. This beer was as good as KBS and without the alcohol at the end. Just wonderful. Founder’s has established themselves as a top tier brewery in the world.

Pours dark and opaque with a slow to form tan head. Aromas of chocolate, heavy roast, caramel malt sweetness. Nice lacing on the glass as you drink it. Roasted bitterness is predominant and lingering into the finish. Malt sweetness and chocolate/caramel are present but the flavor ends with roast, not hop bitterness. A wonderful example of this style.

On tap at the brewery. It was served in a snifter with a nice 1 inch beige head. The smell was fantastic! I could pick up vanilla, espresso, bourbon and heavy malts. It was served a little too cold at first and the bourbon dominated the taste. As the beer warmed up the complexities came through with vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate. It went down easy and had was very easy on the palate. Man, I hope they bottle this sometime as it is a fantastic brew.

On tap at brewery. Black with tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, oak, and prominent bourbon. Tastes very sweet, with malt, coffee, boozy bourbon, chocolate, and molasses. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Awesome!
