UPDATED: MAR 3, 2007 (Bottle) Pours a black body with a small tan head. Aroma of strong roasted coffee (smells just like a rich brew cup of joe). Strong coffee flavor with some chocolate to balance it out. Bitter, dry finish.

Huge coffee aroma with a bit of sweetness. Coal black color, minimal brown head. Flavor explodes with coffee and bittersweet chocolate with some roasted malt becoming more apparent as it warms. The flavors really work well together. Outstanding coffee stout.

Pretty smooth stuff. Had it at Jeff’s B-day bash ’05. Chocolate and coffee all over.

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2005 Glad I didn’t rate after my first test of this brew, because it probably would have been rated a 2.5 or so... but upon my second visit, that I was NOT looking foward to I found this brew to not only be enjoyable, but phenomenal. Dont know what happened in between the 2 bottles (both from same 4 pack, tested at same temp, only difference was the drinking glass) but it went from ok to great. A new favorite. So much flavor hidden in this gem. Wonderful coffee tones, with nice thick chocolate, big time malt roaming around in there. Flavors and aroma that would knock the socks off most brews, this is a special one!

Since trying Schlafly’s coffe stout I have been in love with this sub style. I was told by Joe @ Corral liquers in Granite City, Ill. that Bells was surpassed by it.
Ladies and Gents this surpasses them all
a nice blend of flavors that at first seem harsh for the palate. By the third sip your
hooked as the combination of 25 IBU’s of hops, sweet high viscosity mouthfeel, perfect carbonation, undying aromas (I tasted from a sniffer) bond with your senses. I will still drink Schlaflys but this I will savor and crave for my next one

thanks to styles for this long awaited brew. Pitch black pour with minimal brown head. This poured like motor oil, nice and viscous. Well, no mistaking that this is a coffee stout by the aroma, also dark chocolate aroma. Wonderfully bitter coffee & dark chocolate dance across my tastebuds. This is oily textured. I love bitterness, so this is the ideal brew for me. I am glad to have had the chance to sample this gem.

UPDATED: FEB 24, 2007 Good thing I LOVE coffee. Pours a motor oily thick black with a light brown head. Incredibly beautiful aroma of potting soil, roasty coffee and piney US hops. Taste has big notes of coffee and coffee, chocolate, earthiness, roasted malt, hops, some dark fruit and rum; awesome. Very full, round and creamy on the palate; seriously - the body on this beer HAS to be the silkiest thing on the planet. The great roastyness lingers forever. I have had this beer on four separate occasions over the past couple years; (full bottles) it never ceases to amaze. Perfection.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 argo0 (9226) - Washington DC, USA - FEB 6, 2005
Motor oil black body, small borwn head. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, roasty, coffee, coffee. Taste is mild sweet, very coffee. Smooth, medium-full body. I like but I do not love -- then again, I am not a coffee lover. Thanks jeffc666.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 FlacoAlto (3155) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - FEB 5, 2005
Pours a opaque almost completely black color with only a wispy brown head. When roused it forms a frothy deep brown head. The aroma is like smelly a cold sharply acidic burnt cup of espresso, and burnt barley malt husks. The aroma is quite husky, with grassy notes as well as notes of roasted barley. There is actually some nice notes of chocolate and aromatic coffee under all of this burnt huskiness, though I wish that it showed through a bit more.
Wow, the taste is thick on viscous, I should have guessed at the viscosity of this brew seeing as it has oatmeal in it. It is certainly breakfast in a bottle, it is thick and chewy almost approaching syrupy, though it does not compare to the Dark Lords thickness. The taste is full of roasted burnt notes, at first the burnt grain husks, that are in the nose, are evident in the taste as well. Thankfully this soon dies down, and the burnt acrid bitterness of this beer smoothes out a bit. Certainly there are notes of concentrated express roast, roasted barley, and burnt toast, but also underneath are notes of creamy, dark, semi-sweet chocolate, and hints of licorish.
As this beer warms up it becomes much more smooth (though that might just be my palate becoming acclimated to the roasted notes), more creamy almost like a melted dark chocolate milkshake. Interestingly enough the nose retains the sharply acidic roasted grain husk dominance. This is certainly tasty, but I am a little turned off by acrid notes. Thankfully I have another bottle of this to try, because one is certainly not enough.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 hellomynameis (868) - Mayer, Minnesota, USA - FEB 5, 2005
Strong roasted coffe liek aroma with hints of chocolate. This, black and beautiful with a large but quickly dissapatign head of dark brown. Mostly bitter coffee and chocolate flavours. The appearance of this beer is everything I could wish for, and it is backed by a great taste that I feel is only flawed in a lack of complexity.
