3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle (during the Duessel-Gathering): Completely black, no head to speak of; strong coffeeish, roast-malty nose with traces of burnt malt; dry, strong bitter, slightly sweet flavour, medium bodied; strong lingering coffeeish finish with traces of liquorice. Well crafted, impressive brew. Needs some milk presumably...........

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a pitch black with a thin, very dark tan head that fades slowly to a thin ring and spotty cap. I wasn’t expecting much as far as lacing but pretty nice for the style.
Smell; lots of roasted coffee beans, chocolate and oatmeal. That coffee aroma really makes me think of morning time.
Taste; man, the coffee flavors really show up big time. I’m a coffee person, so this is a very good thing. The chocolate sneaks through some, as well as little bit of some dark fruits. There’s a touch of bitterness and alcohol in the finish. This is one beer that I might actually consider drinking for breakfast. Mouthfeel is full bodied, and very smooth, and oh so drinkable.

dark as balls. even the big head is super dark. i’m getting a lot of coffee and chocolate. tastes pretty good. a bit lighter than i was expecting but i guess it’s classified here as a sweet stout. very bitter, all chocolate malts. not as complex or sweet as i’d like.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, thanks to Sersdf for sharing. Nice dark pour with a thin beige head and nice lacing. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, hops, astringent alcohol, and cheese (like blue cheese, it’s funky). Flavor is really nice; smooth chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, burnt popcorn, huge long bitter finish. If this beer was a little creamier it would be really amazing. This is a great beer though, and I thought I was tasting an Imperial Stout until I realized the body was a bit thin, really the only thing that makes this a sweet stout instead.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Thick syrupy black pour, not much of a head, but rousing produces a dark tan froth that releases a pungent coffee aroma with a whiff of sweet chocolate in the background. The coffee aroma is more intense and pleasing than the other coffee beers I’ve had so far - it has a nice roasted component to it. Palate was medium-bodied. Taste is a blend of coffee and chocolate notes and the finish is a mild acidic bitterness, but it is smooth with some hop flavor coming out in the end.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Beautiful midnight black pour with a deep tan scant head. Complex aroma of chocolate, candied fruit, coffee, and a bit of alcohol. Heavy mouthfeel, but no in a bad way. Slight carbonation. Tons of dark chocolate flavor – almost like drinking a Dove dark chocolate bar – exquisite.

2.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 6/20
UPDATED: JAN 11, 2007 Bottle, poured dark, a few bubbles, I counted five of them in the center of the glass and few more on the edges, tons of aroma of chocolate and coffee, bitter sweet chocolate fragrance, the nostrils are filled with coffee and chocolate, taste of chocolate and coffee, burned coffee, wet ground coffee beans, bitter coffee on the tongue with chocolate, the flavor did not meet expectations of the nose, like jumping from a plane with a parachute expecting a great view down but the chute doesn’t open, you frantically pull at the string, where is the chute? where is my parachute? my chute? you slide faster and closer to earth... you reach out for other possible strings hoping to open your chute, where is this blissfull flavor I have heard of and hoped to have, smash you hit ground and go splat!... the flavor leaves something to be desired, what a dissapointment, as though the brewer came through on half of his commitment, oh well, I will let this sit awhile and see if my parachute opens.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at the Düsseldorf Gathering. Muddy, deep black body. Brown head. Pours like sirupe. Aroma of strong pure chocolate and strong coffee. Very nice and intense aroma. My girlfriend is addicted to chocolate, I think she’d like this beer - at least the aroma. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour: strong malts with some complexity and all well balanced.

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2010 Bottle@Home, Jan 09, 3.7: Coffee aroma. Black colour, light brown head, good lace. Sweet coffee, malty, roasted bitter. Medium. Not extreme but nice. I’m a bit fed up by coffee stouts. Dusseldorf Gathering, Bottled, Jan 07, 4.5: Sweet coffee and licorice aroma. Black color, brown head, good lace, pours like soysauce. Loads of coffee in the flavor, milky, roasted bitter, bit smoked, very full. Founders, please don’t age this on bourbon barrels! It’s much much better this way.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Duane shared a bottle of this with me, thanks! 2006 bottle. Black pour with a mocha colored head that dissipated away to the rim. Aroma was dominated by coffee, but it smelled almost "green" to me; it seemed very fresh. Some hints of hops in the aroma as well when I swirled it around in my glass. Flavor was roasted coffee first, but as it warmed up some nice chocolate flavors came through as well. Just a bit of hops lurking around in the finish. Lots of flavor in this complex brew. Very smooth finish. Excellent stout. Hopefully this isn’t the last time I’ll be drinking this one.
