4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black and oily with a thin, brown head -- doesnít mess around with tan... Aroma is dominated by coffee, with chocolate and roast notes as well. Flavor follows suit with a massive amount of coffee flavor and a nice, smooth chocolaty finish. Good amounts of sweet caramel and molasses notes as well. No real hops flavor to speak of, but sufficient bitterness from roast.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours with some of the most intersting aroma youíll ever encounter. The nose is 2 parts coffee, 1 part chocolate, 1 part ashtray. The latter part brings the aroma down to a 9 (form 10/10). The aroma lingers until the last drop as well - impressive! The pour is a typical black stout, with a chocolate-milk colored head. Lots of roast in the flavor (both of chocolate and coffee). The fullness of the recipe is appreciated all the way to the end, as the malt bill carries right through to a smooth, milky finish, with little in the way of bitterness. The double dose of oatmeal really sweetens and thickens this beauty. All without overt alcohol presence. My kind of stout.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This pours out of the bottle like motor oil and a brown head appears like paint on black velvet. The aroma in this beer was hypnotic. Chocolate, maple syrup, creasote, roast coffee beans, tabacco all wafted up at me from my snifter. It is worth this beer just to smell it. Very thick, creamy velvet smooth mouthfeel. This is definitly a coffee beer with nice chocolate notes and some caramel sweetness. The alcohol rides comfortably in the middle of this beer without being too prominent. Nice bitter finish of coffee and hops. Really a great sipping beer.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: JUL 4, 2005 Bottled. From OhioDad, thanks. Pours an impenetrable obsidian with a dark brown thick, lasting head. Aroma was full of chocolate and coffee with some stand by caramel and toffee with no apparent hop aroma. Flavor was of roasted malt and sweet chocolate, not cheap Hershey syrup but smooth, rich Godiva with an excellently balanced and complementing espresso flavor. Some smooth hop bitterness and acidity was present in the dryish finish with some subtle earthy hop flavor. Subtle ester profile of raison and date and dried dark cherry. Alcohol warmth in the finish towards the back of the throat. Body was that of a thick, creamy-smooth chocolate milkshake, oaty and syrupy with perfect carbonation. Excellent stout whether it be imperial or not.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A dark pour resulted in a little oiliness around the edges, just a few light marks of suds. Subtle soft aroma of roasted barley and coffee. More of that roasty barley and coffee in the flavor with some added notes of chocolate. Balanced, drinkable, and seamingly well crafted, but how this beer stands out, so much so that it gets a 4.2 overall is beyond my comprehension.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 13, 2007 Pours like used motor oil. This ainít no wussy beer. Smells overwhelming like alcoholic coffee with a bit of malt. Taste is coffee right out of the gates mixed with chocolate, followed by a pleasant surpise of hops, and a little wisp of oatmeal in the finish. Finishes smooth with a bit of alcohol warmth.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Delectable aroma; unique. I canít imagine a better aroma. I canít say itís coffee because Iíve never smelled coffee like this. I do smell hops. Perfectly opaque. Refreshingly large tan head, lasting. Excellent lace. After I opened this brew and read the description, I realized that perhaps I shouldnít be drinking a rich coffee beer shortly before retiring to bed. Hopefully the alcohol from this brew and my previous brews this evening: Dark Horse Reserve Special Black Bier and Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia, will put me to sleep. I pre-warmed this beer a little bit, and it is was immediately ready to drink. Man, is this stuff good. It blows me away that, despite the high beer prices in Michigan (read: Ann Arbor), that I can get a beer this good for "only" $2.89 a bottle. Not sure I would choose to drink this at breakfast time, but it would be good any time of day. It is really hard to find any flaws in this brew. I can see what the fuss is all about.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle - well, this rates very highly and it had better be good! What a nightmare - I was carrying my bag-o-beer containing a four-pack of this on eand a sixer of their Centennial IPA from the and the bag broke. So did three of these four bottles. The one that did not break still spilled about half. That sucks! Well, here goes. Huge - almost a whole bottleís worth of roast and coffee in the nose. Black as night with a medium brown head. Fairly quickly dissipating. Big chocolate flavor upfront with a mighty coffee finish - beautiful!!! Nice creaminess, as expected from the oats ... now Iím really pissed!

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
This stout looks more imperial than most imperials. Pours black with a dark brown, frothy head. Aroma is dark chocolate and coffee. The flavor is thick, not imperial thick, semi-sweet chocolate, oatmeal, and coffee. The finish is velvety smooth and slides like oil. Iíve wanted to try this forever. Thanks MIBRomeo!!!!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Coffee auroma and a perfect dark pour. Coffee flavor to this beer, but a bit of a sour aftertaste spoils it. Good, but not great.
