4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle courtesy of santoslhalper. Great nose to this one. Rich, smoky, chocolate and coffee. Vanilla and molasses, light Tootsie Roll. Mild acidity with alcohol vapors, and a sour tang. Very nice. A glass of Stygian darkness with chocolately thin lacing head. Full oily body with medium carbonation, liquid velvet. Starts rich and chocolatey, with smoky toasted malt, vinuous acidity, molasses and coffee, burnt smoky acidity. Tootsie Rolls and vanilla. Leaves a nutty burnt bitter chalkyness on the tongue, with a bit of alcoholic warming and sweet creme de cafe finish. Light smoky coffee after with perfect balance of bitterness and lingering sweetness. This is a really nice impy stout.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle courtesy of Secret Santa. Pours black with a moderately large brown head that left lots of sticky lace while it quickly receded. Very pleasant aroma of coffee and roasted malt. The flavor is again coffee and roasted malt, however, the coffee isn’t as totally dominating as it is in some other coffee stouts I’ve had recently. Coffee bitterness at the finish. Good way to start the day!

Bottle. Black colour with a nice head. Much aroma of coffee and some roastedness. Flavour of coffee and alcohol. Ends up very bitter - and a lof of coffee in the aftertaste.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Thick, heavy dark pour with bubbly dark tan head. Head disappears disappointing quickly, but some lingers on top of a what appears to be a very heavy beer. Strong aromas of bitter chocolate, expresso, toffee sweetness, and oatmeal. The beer drinks as thick as it looks... truly one to savor on the palate. Same tastes as aromas, with added roastiness and tasty hops. For all its intensity, it’s really a lovely beer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2007 vintage. Pours pretty much pitch black with the faintest possible mahogany tint. A thick, foamy, coffee colored head displays excellent retention, lasting the entire drink and coating the glass in heavy sheets of lace. The aroma is big and chocolaty, with huge notes of coffee, mocha, heavy cream, and oatmeal. The flavor is equally huge and incredibly smooth. Mocha milkshake comes to mind. Chocolaty, roasty, sweet, and creamy pretty much sums this one up. The mouthfeel is full, silky, and not at all cloying. For some reason, I’m trying hard not to like this beer, but it isn’t working. I’m pleasantly surprised, especially after not being that impressed with the Kentucky version. Awesome brew.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Tap @ Monk’s. Black w plenty of perpetually self regenerating dark tan head. Very rich, creamy, spicy, hops, roasted malt, coffee, & chocolate aromas. Flavor is all the usual high end desirable imp stout characteristics described above delivered on a surprisingly creamy, silky smooth palate. Only possessing moderate sweetness with plenty of hop flavor and bitterness. Complex, spicy experiences woven throughout. Alcohol integrated perfectly. Well into full bodied. Excellent Imperial Stout. I can hit this again anytime.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2009 Big thanks to mcbackus for sending this one my way. Sinply put, there are tons o’ coffee in this one. Coffee coffee coffee. Black and thick, with a small head. Big bubbles all around. Not a lot going on in the aroma, but the flavor makes up for it. Almost like blending up oatmeal and coffee and drinking that. Not as thick as the decription leads you to believe (drink it with a fork? not quite), but still thick and full of flavor. Very malty and delicious on the palate. Very nice. YUM!
