4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
As implied by the label, it is definately a hearty brew. Pours a deep heavy black colour with a very rich mouthfeel. Heavy in chocolate, vanilla and oats. Creamy texture. nice strong chocolatey aroma.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: AUG 18, 2008 Tap at Spuyten Duyvil: Opaque black with a deep brown/lacing head. Huge barley aroma. Roasted dark cocoa, old coffee grinds and a very light hop note. Dense rich body without being cloying. The flavor is pretty much a homogeneous coffee grind bitterness. There is a huge malt body to give it some underlying character; bitter dark chocolate syrup, and a long resiny coffee finish. A really well made Stout, but many of these highly rated coffee Stouts just donít do it for me lately.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Courtesy of Sparky27. Pours a dark creamy brown with a subtle tan head. Aroma is mostly coffee. Tastes of cocoa, coffee, licorice, roasted malt, and corn syrup dominate this brew. I LOVE COFFEE, so I enjoyed this throughly. Palate is not to heavy, and is balanced well with the booze.

Draft at Spuyten Duyvil. Black pour with some tan head. Aroma is sweet oaty malt, roasted malt, coffee, and some cola. Flavor is the same, sweet oaty malt and chocolate, roast, cola, some not-fresh coffee grounds in the finish. Itís good, but not really my style.

*did not mind would not buy*
aroma: dry mealy coffee, old stale spent espresso grounds. also some cardboard. nothing rich or wonderful really. app: black not decadent. foamy tan head. flavor: nice, not great lil boozy. the lack of richness and malty huge depth compared to the sharp booze is a bit out of balance and not pleasing, the aftertaste is very nice though. i wish the taste was more like the after taste. palate, to thin to spritzy. OA: nice not great. needs to be more rich and smooth.

had it on the cask--after-- the kentucky bourbon. this has a better flavor but is less in every other way. the absence of the cheap bourbon taste is nice and it is nicely hopped in this presentation. guess i gotta re-rate but here i go for now. the head is foamy and the beer is lighter and a bit oatey. low sweetness.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
A pitch black color, opaque, with a dark caramel colored head that forms slightly and dissolves away quickly. The scent in a word, DAMN! There is alot coming out when smelling this beer. It starts with a combination of chocolate and coffee fragrances, and it blends itself to a sweet oatmeal scent. The taste is well blended flavor of chocolate, then to coffee, and fianlly to the oatmeal, with slight touch of bitterness at the end. A rich feel, yet very smooth, light syrupy texture at the back, it does have very nice dry finish. Man, this is an excellent stout, an intense aroma, very strong flavor and a wonderful mouthfeel, make this a very drinkable beer.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Actually drank this for breakfast yesterday. It set a certain tone for the whole day, I think. Bottle pours inky jet black with a dark brown head. Awesome nose, dark chocolate and strong black coffee, also something burnt in there, like cooled coals after a campfire, and now itís the morning and whaddyaknow, time for breakfast. Flavor starts with a slight sourness like pumpernickel, easing into a long, slow, roasted coffee bitterness, where the campfire smoke melds with perfectly reasonable hops. Oily, thick but smooth, quite dry mouthfeel. Bitter, toasty aftertaste. Top of the morning.

MIld sweet dark malt smell with a brown head. Solid coffee flavor with a moderate body to back it. Nice bitter coffee finish. Just enough sweetness to balance it all. Very good.
