4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: SEP 20, 2014 Bottled Oct/2012. Poured into a snifter.
A: Looks pretty solid. Super dark brown. Little head... but I had a lousy pour and plus it’s a snifter so...
S: This is what a coffee beer should smell like... and oddly enough it’s coffee. Like a french roast this one: little acidity, a hint of chocolate, roasty. Very smooth. Nice.
T: Bit chocolate note. Bitter throughout which is great for an imperial stout which sometimes have a lot of acidiy. Good balance. Coffee notes. Goes down pretty smooth. Finish is a bit more unbalanced that the flavors.
P: As mentioned above: no acidity which is what I’m looking for in an Imp. stout. Medium/full body.
Overall a great beer. Drinks like a limited release, but is widely available for about half the year and I love that! Great balance, great flavors. Much better than the average imperial stout.
3 year vert
Current smells more balanced. More chocolate. Coffee acidity becomes more apparent with age.
13 is softer and 12 is softer still. Vanilla notes. More in the 12.
Boozier the older. Still smooth. Whiskey notes... Oak. 13 is maybe the most boring. Little chocolate. And more complex vanilla and oak flavors not as apparent. 14 is the most bitter. Bigger bolder flavors there. Well this was fun! Carmel notes in the 12. In all 12 was more whiskey like... Extremely complex and 14 was more beer like. 13 was not working well... Too much acidity in the nose. I think the 12 is the winner. Yes no doubt.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours nearly solid black with just a hint of lightening around the margins, a short finger of beige head diminishing gradually to a thin ring, minimal to no lacing (4/5). Nose is coffee, oats, some chocolate, milkiness and sweetness (9/10). Taste is balanced moderate sweet and bitter with some citrus tart (9/10). Medium body, prickly to moderate sustained carbonation, off-dry lingering bitter finish with building alcohol warmth (4/5).
Maybe not quite up to the hype, but dammit, it’s close. The most surprising aspect is perhaps the body - I was expecting syrupy and mouth coating, but the carbonation and intense (but balanced) bitterness keeps that from happening. The coffee bitterness is supplemented by a nearly-hidden citrusy hop sharpness, and tempered by a lactose-like chocolate sweetness. The finish is nearly crisp as a result, the long bitter tail notwithstanding. The ABV is also extremely well integrated, coming through only as a gradual and mild warming. As a result, this is a surprisingly light stout that is very drinkable, and very dangerous. (19/20)

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Surtout chocolat noir. Agréable. Un peu de mélasse. Bon dosage sucre et amertume. Agréable, mais rien d’explosif.

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is heaven. Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts; a dark and delicious experience that is well-balanced to want to keep putting this down forever. One of the first crafts I had a few years ago before that got me out of the dull light beer life.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Black color. Aroma is coffee, dark chocolate, licorice. Taste is cough syrup, roasted almost burnt coffee, dark chocolate. This is very hoppy in that the malt does not overpower it. Pretty good.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
As soon as I see this beer I buy it. Dark and full bodied, warming and malty. Chocolate and coffee make a great combination and a great oatmeal undertone create a beer with a full and lasting flavor.

There may be a better imperial coffee stout, but I haven’t come across it yet. Nice roasty aroma, tan head and inky dark brown in color. Medium creamy with clean bitter finish.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 20/20
330ml bottle served in Duvel tulip glass.
A: Pours deep black color forming a big creamy, solid and persistent beige head. Beautiful. Lots of lingering lacings are formed and left in the glass
S: A chocolate bomb. Strong notes of dark chocolate and roasted malts. Also some notes of coffee, vanilla and wood
T: Follows the nose: Strong notes of dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee and oak. Notes of vanilla. A bit sweet and molasses upfront followed by the pleasant 60IBU bitterness
M: Heavy creamy molasses body. Medium to low carbonation. Roasted malts aftertaste
O: Great drinkability. For sure one of the best Imperial Stouts I’ve ever had. Smooth and molasses. Delicious
