Nate (2255), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 30, 2008 Bottle courtesy of santoslhalper. Great nose to this one. Rich, smoky, chocolate and coffee. Vanilla and molasses, light Tootsie Roll. Mild acidity with alcohol vapors, and a sour tang. Very nice. A glass of Stygian darkness with chocolately thin lacing head. Full oily body with medium carbonation, liquid velvet. Starts rich and chocolatey, with smoky toasted malt, vinuous acidity, molasses and coffee, burnt smoky acidity. Tootsie Rolls and vanilla. Leaves a nutty burnt bitter chalkyness on the tongue, with a bit of alcoholic warming and sweet creme de cafe finish. Light smoky coffee after with perfect balance of bitterness and lingering sweetness. This is a really nice impy stout.
CelticBrew (509), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Oct 11, 2008 Pours from 12 oz bottle almost completely black, forming beautiful off black foamy head. Aroma of chocolate delights, hops, malts, espresso coffee beans. Flavour much of the same, simple bliss and goodness, smoothness prevails in rich and sublime cleanness. Bitterness and hops give the beer a supreme character, kick ass! noncaloric (112), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Oct 10, 2008 Aroma: Roasted malts and chocolate, and no matter how much I’ve inhaled, it doesn’t fade. Appearance: Thick pour, darkest brown, thin brown head, minimal spotty lace. Flavor: Big roast malt flavor at the front, building towards lots of sweet cream on the mid-palate. Dark fruits abound, and some not-so-dark fruits as well (apricot, bitter melon...) Dark, bitter chocolate was there all along, but comes to the fore in the finish. Palate: Starts prickly, drinks smooth, and finishes dusty. Magjayran (1157), Durham, North Carolina, USA Oct 10, 2008 Pours an oily black with just a very thing tan film of a head. Of course the coffee comes on strong in the nose but beyond that I pick up some notes of molasses. This is definitely not one of those sweet imp. stouts. Bitter black coffee dominates with a bit of black patent malt like taste and a lingering chocolate finish. Solid and bitter to the end. Just not mind blowing. msante79 (279), Illinois, USA Oct 9, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours pitch black with no head except for thin ring on edges of my snifter. Aroma is rich coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Flavor is heavy with coffee. Also taste chocolate and roasted malt and touch of vanilla. Mouthfeel is smooth. Similar brew to Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel and Speedway Stout. Not a huge fan of stouts with big coffee flavors but this is not overdone. zappafan99 (332), Rock Hill, South Carolina, USA Oct 6, 2008 Taste 10/8 Looks: Opaque/black, thin clinging head. Aroma: Nice dark roast malt and coffee blend. Some chocolate in there as well. Taste: Thick and rich coffee with a little chocolate. Smooth, even and hides the alcohol well.
