4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured so dark from the 12oz. bottle the lights went dim and the glass topped with a huge four-finger, foamy, dark beige head, with godly resilience and thick coated lacing around the edges of my tumbler: Aroma of oats, raw cereal malts, hazelnut, subtle hints of cinnamon, and alcohol. When the head dissipates some, I get a ton of sweetened chocolate, chewy toffee, crystallized ginger, definitely dark roasted malts, coffee mixed with skim milk, and some earthworm. Rich layers of sweet chocolate take the palate upfront, as well as the feeling of taking a pure shot of bitter espresso at the back of the tongue. An enjoyable and subtly persistent heat of alcohol warms when going down the hatch. Drinkability: One of the few heavy chocolate stouts out there that I can imagine chugging (or at least heavily downing). Pairing: Chocolate syrup drizzled on a seven layer chocolate bread pudding concoction. Rebuy: Yes. #470 on 05072010, DG.

Bottle into a nonick pint. Pour is black as sin with a tiny (but thick) brown head; Coffee right up front (and not that Arabica crap), cocoa, whole wheat bread, and plenty of roasted malt on the nose...I could smell this forever; Very complex taste with dark chocolate up front, roasted malts, and fading to and earthy Sumatra coffee; A full body but not overbearing and just enough carbonation to be noticed. I can see why this one gets so much high praise. Certainly one that Iíll buy any time I can get my hands on it!!

12 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a solid jet black like the oil out of my old ladyís Neon when she forgot to change the oil in a year, darkened tan ring around the glass for a head, nominal lacing. Aroma of coffee, smoke, soot from a chimney that hasnít been clean in about 3 years, and burnt brimstone from the 3rd layer of hell- awesome! Hits the mouth with a wide body thatís thick, malt was practically burnt but they made it workout, middle is a sharp acidity to it, finish continues with the acidity and I detect some cream and a litlle wink. And a smile. With no panties on... and the old lady aint around!

A heavy dark pour with minimal head. Aroma coffee, oatmeal and a spicy hoppiness. Taste is delicious, reflects the aroma with added chocolate and dark dried fruits. Mouthfeel is silky with a touch of effervescence. Hops give the after taste great carry. Great beer.

Poured at cellar temp (56F) from bottle. Pours a dark black color with two finger tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, and a hint of oat. The coffee part of the aroma is earthy and a little dusty. Taste is like a black morning coffee with creamy chocolate. Mouthfeel is very round. This is deliciously creamy and you might even think of a milk stout with this creaminess. The oats do a great job making that creamy texture. Great on a cold evening.
