Benzai (12154) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - MAR 10, 2012
650ml bottle I brought @ ZZT III. [from trade with Jeffo1] Tasted side by side with the Founders BS. Pitch black opaque color, full sized light brown head. Smell malts, dark malts, roastyness, a lot of dark chocolate. Taste malts, dark and roasted malts, again a lot of dark chocolate, alcohol, bitter, mocca, vanilla, lightly molasses. Round taste, not as complex as I expected, bit sticky taste. Soft carbo, medium to full body.

mcberko (11861) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 15, 2012
750mL bottle, pours jet black with a small light brown head. Aroma is dense, with big maple syrup, bourbon barrels, oatmeal still present, and a little bit of smoked malt. Flavour is dominated by the maple syrup, with a somewhat cloying sweetness; there is mild bourbon barrels, very light coffee and mild chocolate notes. Quite complex, but at the same time, the maple syrup is way too overbearing and a bit cloying. I much prefer Founder’s other imperial stouts, as this is too dominating on the maple syrup. Certainly a good beer, but way overrated due to the rarity and hype, I feel.

Bottle, my 5000th rating. Pours opaque with a medium, frothy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate malt, caramel notes, moderate coffee, prunes, dates, and licorice, light alcohol and maple notes. Flavor is dark malt, roast and chocolate, coffee with prunes and dates, light alcohol, sweet palate with a lightly dry finish. Full body, medium warmth and carbonation.

This was the first beer I drank during the 2010 Ratebeer Summer Gathering. Good place to start. Served on draft at Founders Brewing Company. Pours a pitch black color with a medium brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Big maple notes in the aroma with chocolate and bourbon. The taste is chocolate, caramel, maple, coffee and a bitter leafy hop finish. Full bodied. Very nice beer.

Scopey (11338) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 2, 2012
Bottle at Leighton’s Birthday celebrations, thanks to Bruce (deeblo) who gained instant legend status for breaking this out! It pours jet black, with a thick tan head. The nose is toasted coconut, toffee, fudge, wood, vanilla, chocolate, touch of chilli pepper and unroasted coffee. The taste is roasted malt, toffee, caramel, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, toasted coconut, nougat/marshmallow and lingering boozy warmth. Full body and fine carbonation. Really well balanced and smooth. Great stuff.
