COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Selected as a benchmark for the Beer Judge Certification Program used in all American based beer judgings. Centennial IPA has quickly become the IPA of choice. Pour yourself a pint of this complex flavorful ale and bask in the frothy head’s floral bouquet. Relish the immense citrus accents, achieved by the abundance of dry hopping. This ale’s sweet, malty undertones balance the hop character with a finish that never turns too bitter.

2003 Batch (1 year old):
Hazy bright copper coloured body with strong orange highlights and no head at all! Aroma of candied hops-truly mouthwatering. Oranges, grapefruits, pine and soap all come out as well! Medium-bodied; Assertive dry hoppiness a matching malt backbone. Aftertaste puckering and dry-great floral hop taste & bittering feel. Overall, a great IPA for Bordeaux lovers, as you get that lovely tannic mouthful. Many thanks to my Mom for picking this up for me on one of her trips to Michigan. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased at Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 14-September-2004.

Bottle: Real big sweet hop aroma. Lots of sweet grapefruit and pine. Pours a dark transparent amber with a big creamy white head with great retention. Light initial citrus maltiness with a big hop grapefruit finish. Piney aftertaste. Very nice IPA.

Orange amber with moderate head. Lovely hops aroma (with citrus). I thought the flavor was more pine hops. An American style IPA-quite hoppy.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2005 I’m having a ridiculous time trying to pour this stuff. Even being as careful as possible, it explodes into my pint glass, filling it about 75% with a frothy, soapy head. Once it settles down somewhat, it could see a rich orange body under the off-white head. Nice citric aroma, good hoppiness. This falls down on the taste, somewhat, as there’s an earthy flavoring that I can’t identify, leaving a tart but soiled finish. I’ll have to test another, as soon as my nerves settle down from the explosions.

Big head that just exploded. Very crisp, hop, yeast nose. Quite good. Strong hop flavors all the way through. I enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Golden amber with thin white head, dense smell of dry hopped centennial hops. Very good hop flavor with well balanced malt. Very little by way of bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel. Excellent IPA!

I like the Centennial hop, it constitutes one of my favorite beers, Bell’s TwoHearted Ale, and was quite well-represented in Town Hall’s single-malt series last year. Here’s my first Founders, a favorite style, using this hop, and let’s see what we will see... Hazy, deep amber to bronze color, fine, fuzzy, tapioca-ish head. Aroma: grapefruit, a whiff of pine, pineapple, softly fruity, never harsh or bitter, but definitely hoppy, on a juicified level, a sweet pleasure to sniff! Taste: rather mild on the mouth at first, though not unsparing in taste, fruit flavors do a delciious fandango in the tongue, mangoes and melons, grapefruit, and nectarine, with a slice of lime, the bitterness just hangs on the side, never poisons the experiencek merely barks up and nips a little. Again, bitterness is not unpleasant, but full fruity flavor is nothing but! Medium bodied, zesty, medium-length finish, hangs well and firmly in the mouth. Nice rendition of the style, one I would enjoy again and again, if this were an option!

Aroma is citrusy hops, moderate fruitiness, and honey. Light orange-amber, thin but lingering off-white head. Solid bitterness, citrusy and resiny hop flavor, just enough malt to be noticeable. Medium body, crisp, lingering bitterness. Well-balanced IPA, great hop character with just enough malt to support.
