This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Tastes a bit like dirty bastard but not quite there. Not bad on its own but when you consider that you also have dirty bastard to contend with, it gets a slight downgrade. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Dark ruby colour. Rich alcoholic, malty aroma, dried fruits. Full body, reasonably thick. Sweet malt, caramel, fruitcake and almost a bit of chocolate leading to a medium bitter finish Exceptionally well balanced, very well disguised alcohol. One of the most easily drinkable and deceptive beers of its strength. A fantastic beer.

Bottle at home. Pours dark amber with orangey tan head, frothy. Aromas of caramel, molasses, vanilla, ripe fruits, oak, leather, rum, hint of bourbon. Very nice, complex brew. Taste is medium sweet and light-medium bitter, with warm alcohol coming through at the end. Nice medium-full body and lovely mouthfeel. I like this a lot.

12 oz. bottle over a year old. Deep dark ruby color without any head. Aroma is mild port wine, raisins, light tobacco and dates.

The flavor shows a array of dark fruit notes with caramelized sugar, mild dirty notes of English malts. Mild spice notes toward the finish with toasted grain. Light tones of rum soaked raisins with a light mild carbonation. Body is medium leading on the lighter side with a syrupy texture.

Deep redish amber with a thick head.
Aroma is quite sweet and has notes of toffee, raw onions, blue cheese and alcohol.
Thick and sweet mouth feel.
Sweet taste of caramel an toffee leading to an alcohol bitter finish.
Should perhaps rest in a dark cellar for a year or two before consuming.

Transfer from BA review on 11-23-13- Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – The beer is served a clear deep golden amber color with a small thick looking white head. The head fades rather slowly leaving a decent level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is of a sweet caramel and a decent level of a bready smell. Along with these aromas are some notes of darker fruits with some raisin and prune as well as some other sweet smells of toffee and molasses. Along with these smells are some oak and booze which combined with the rest to produce a sweet, warming and malty aroma overall. Taste – The taste begins with a rather sweet and smooth taste. The taste is largest of a smooth bready and caramel flavor with hints of light roasted and dark fruits within. The roastiness get slightly stronger as the taste advances with the darker fruits of raisin and plum getting stronger as the taste advances as well. Some more boozy flavors start to work their way in more toward the middle of the taste with some nice molasses sweetness coming to the tongue as well. With the booze and the sweeter flavors that come to the tongue more toward the middle, and a little bit of an oaky, rum like flavor, that comes to the tongue at the end, one is left with a nice smooth and sweet warming flavor to be left on the tongue. Mouthfeel –For a brew of almost 10 % abv it is very drinkable yet appropriate in style. The body of the beer is on the thicker side rather nicely accentuating all the sweet and malty flavors of the beer while the carbonation of the brew is on the lower side, which allows all the oaky, sweet, and malty flavors tons of time to linger on the tongue. Overall – A very enjoyable sweet and malty brew. Just what an old ale should be.

Pours a hazy amber into snifter. Aroma is full of toffee, orange peel, and molasses. The molasses is at the forefront in flavor. The oak also comes on strong which I like. This is initially sweet on the palate but is well balanced with a complex spiciness and slightly acidic. A vanilla richness lingers on the palate. This is a top shelf ale right here.

"this is close to nailing the style right on the head. wonderful complex malty sweet aroma. flavor and feel are very nice, but not quite up to par with the smell due to the alcohol presence. roasted malt, plum sweetness. very good brew."

Poured a very clear dark amber color with a minimal head. Aroma of fruit and bourbon with some coconut and vanilla notes. Kind of smelled like a pina colada at first. Light tartness in the aroma. The flavor led to more coconut, bourbon and malt. Light alcohol with a nice warming sensation. It was more like drinking a coctail than a beer but it wasn’t bad because of that. Medium to full bodied
