This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

dark copper pour, small tan head. Molasses, caramel, and alcohol in the nose. Sweet. Middle is full bodied with a solid mouth-feel. Finish is more fresh caramel, with a hint of wood, and finally some drying hop bitterness. Went really nice with a lamb hot pot!

12oz bottle. Pours a reddish clear color with a small off-white head. The aroma is quite interesting, itís very smelly with gingerbread and other spicy notes. Taste is very good, matches aroma. Lots of complexity, alcohol is insidious. Resinous mouthfeel. Not my favorite, itís borderline skunky, but interesting enough to keep me coming back for another!

From a bottle at a dinner party. Founders really can do no wrong for me. Pours a reddish brown with a small white dissipating head. Nose is super malty, caramel, sweet, molasses. Taste is really smooth- the 10% alcohol is hidden well- although it is there in the finish if you pay attention. Taste is tons of malts- although it is not overly sweet- with earthiness, pine, vanilla, bourbon, and citrus coming to the party. Subtle and smooth. Kind of makes one wish for the local watering hole in a sea faring port on a cold stormy night.

Nice looking mahogany-amber beer with a thin foamy off white head that lasts a short while before settling into a thin surface film. Rich nose of toffee, stewed stone fruit, and sweet vanilla. Flavor is a bit sweet, but not overly so, with flavors of caramel apple, molasses, dried fruit, and light oak. This is then counterbalanced by a touch of bitterness that leaves a pleasing aftertaste. It hides its alcohol well. Quite enjoyable

No to mamy niezłą zielarnię. W aromacie przeważa melasa, jest anyż, jest spora słodycz, sporo innych, niezidentyfikowanych nut. W smaku gęste, wręcz lepkie, doskonale zamaskowany alkohol. Jest melasa, piołun, spora słodycz przypominająca marmoladę, wyraźny karmel, gdzieś w tle nuty owocowe. Świetna kompozycja, choć ziołowo - chmielowy finisz ciut za długi.

Very rich and sweet with a smooth velvety texture and honey aroma. Pours a dark amber with a small head. Tastes like a barley wine to me, good but can get overwhelming after a few ounces.

Pours light brown, very minimal white head, has the ale look, citrus smell, the taste is sweet, hoppy, citrus . Itís a cross between a Scottish ale and a Baleywine. I have been looking forward to this, not disappointed.

Pours an amber-brown with a thin white head. Smells of chocolate and caramel are strong at the nose. Has a medium-thick body, medium bitterness, and a pleasant chocolatety aftertaste. Definitely would recommend, but is on the stronger side.

Type: 12-oz. bottle Glass: Hotel glass From: Whole Foods in Tempe, Ariz. Price: $2.59 Purchased: May 15, 2014 Consumed: May 16, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a caramel, amber clear color with about one finger of bubbly, off-white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Average foamy layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average-to-poor retention on the top of the glass. Had to work for the smell, but got apple juice, dark apple, green grapes, fruity aromas, floral notes and some sugary honey. Tasted much, much better than the smell and a lot different. Got oak, molasses, vanilla, dark apple, fruity notes, light butterscotch, booziness and still some sweet honey. Medium body. Oily-to-thin texture. Soft carbonation. Long, boozier finish. This beer was just OK. I was hoping for more, but it was missing something. Canít quite put my finger on what.
