COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

355ml bottle. Cellared for over a year. Pours visibly thick (complete with accompanying glug) with a cloudy rosy beige body, and almost no head. Smells great. Sultana raisins, caramel, dried apple, light buttery oak notes, and light butterscotch. Full bodied and sweet, with woody notes, a light floral note, noticeable medium bitterness, caramel, and raisin up front followed by some more pronounced metallic hopping, dried fruit, and lingering woody notes in the finish. Not picking up much in the way of molasses though. Very much comes across as a barley wine, and a good one at that. Well balanced with no one flavour taking over the spectrum. A repeat purchase for sure.

My first Old Ale and I think Iím in love. I didnít know quite what to expect but I wasnít prepared for all of the sweet, malty goodness and boozy complexity. Iím getting ahead of myself, though. The body is amber-brown and the head is impressive for such a high ABV. Aroma is malty rich, boozy, and has touches of oak - very much like a Barleywine, which makes sense. Flavor has dark fruits (raisin, plumb, black berries) and sweetness (brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, maple syrup, caramel). This is a delectable (yes, delectable - Iím pulling out all the fancy words) ale. It was a privilege to bust my Old Ale cherry with this brew.

Bottle. A- Perfume, marshmallow, roses, alcohol, vanilla, woody, caramel, sweet, malty. A- Dark amber color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Roses, slightly sweet, malty, roses, bourbon, rich. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, strong smooth finish. O- Wow. That is all I can say. This very much resembles a barleywine. Very rich and complex and oh so delicious. There is an aroma and taste that I canít quite place a finger on but itís a good feature. If all Old Ales are this good, I need more. Then again, itís Founders and they seem to do things right.

Luktar både sött och salt. Även smaken har lite havsvatten i sig. Annars påminner det om tunn belgian strong Ale men med fyllig kropp. Det är tydligt fokus på malt. Lite överskattad. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
