This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Best before 27/12/2014. The Bottle enjoyed at cosmic café in turku. Oak aged, whiskey, vanilla, woody,... Amberish color, reddish light brown. Taste is sweet and aromatic with whiskey flavour and sweetness of cane sugar. Strong in alcohol but warming and nice to be enjoyed in front of the fire place in winter time..

Bottle shared by rosskyle. Consumed during the Final Four. Minimal head on an amber/copper colored old ale. Aroma is sweet with bubblegum and tropical fruit. The sweetness surprisingly kind of disappears as the taste sip begins. Alcohol presence, little peat, and an underlying sugary quality as it progresses. Caramel and molasses. Finishes with an element of bitterness with a last second rush of sugar. Overall it has a higher alcohol double IPA feel to it. Very satisfying. Like a curmudgeon who has consumed his fair share of Werthers.

Pours copper-amber with a one finger off white head with pretty nice lacing. Aroma is of sweet malts, candied fruits, vanilla, caramel, apricots, floral hops, toffee, and some raisins. Taste is sweet malts, dark candied fruits, vanilla, toffee, brown sugar, bread pudding, herbal hops, floral hops, and some light booze. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semi-moderately bitter, long, lingering, slightly boozy finish. Overall, a tasty, pretty complex old ale that is pretty hoppy for the style.

UPDATED: APR 10, 2015 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Initial, bright aromas of sweet toffee with a floral and herbal note come through with a woody and vanilla supporting note. Secondary notes of sugary maple syrup / molasses also appear with some sweet citrus and berries, as well as a light, hidden alcohol undertone. It pours a hazy / murky orange bronze topped by an active, off-white soapy, uneven head that retains a thin ring and small splotch surface as well as a light, spotty lace. The taste is a medium high, malty sweet and complimentary medium waxy bitter. The beer is full bodied, malty, with a thick and sticky texture thanks to a near flat, light fuzz carbonation. Flavors of toffee, citrus, and vanilla are most noticeable with a finish that?s crisp, and fairly clean, with woody spice character and a light alcohol warmth. The aftertaste is a waxy citrus rind and herbal blend. It?s a sneaky alcohol content in that there?s only a faint hint on the nose, but it?s well hidden on the palate. It?s rather malty fresh, so it?ll be curious to see how age treats it.

Bottle. Cloudy crimson, topped with a dense layer of tan froth. Smooth yet light aroma -- maple, buttery vanilla, toffee, pancakes. The oak is more prominent and sharp in the flavor, as is a whiskey-like alcohol note. Maple is soft, as are French vanilla, fresh red apple and a late-arriving toasted bread note. Everything in here is subtle, creamily blended and very drinkable for its ABV. I kind of wish it was MORE substantial, actually.
