This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Pours out rich reddish brown. Aroma is mixture of caramel and vanilla, almost as if the beer had been aged in a charred oak cask. The nose predicts the flavor in that there is rich caramel/vanilla sweetness backed up by some earthy bitterness. I’ll definitely buy this beer again.

Borrled at Monks Café, Wallingatan. POurs out in a clear reddish amber appearnace with a small bubbly off-white foam. Rich malty aroma of prunes, figs, molasses, almonds and nust with dryish underones of black chocolate, black pepper and alcohol. Full-bodied withnotes of fudge, molasses,, prunes and burnt caramel with rough undertones of grass and peppery alcohol. Long warming finish of bitter nuts, grass, and peppery alcohol with strong undertones of molasses. Feels a bit young.

Dark copper colour with a small off-white head leaving some lazing on the snifter. Aroma is very sweet malty with notes of dark fruit, caramell, alcohol and pure sugar. Flavour is sirupy malts, various fruit, alcohol heat with notes of raisins, caramell and carmelised sugar. The finish is woody, hot and somewhat dry. Not very balanced but still quite tasty, mouthfeel is smooth.

Twelve oz bottle. Thick and sweet with a thin amber foam layer and small but sticky lacing. Aroma has bourbon, hickory, toffee candy. Smooth on the tongue, not a huge amount of carbonation, almost barleywine syrupy. Bourbon, black fig, plum, sweet almond paste. Slight snap of hops at the back of the throat on the finish, and a bit of residual alcohol heat on the sides of the tongue.

Smells of raison, honey, and butterscotch. The first sip is funky, very unique tasting beer. Has a creamy body. Tastes like a butterscotch candy mixed with vanilla, caramel, and rum. This is a peculiar beer, with lots of interesting flavors. Has a moderate bitterness, some sugary notes as well, with a lasting alcohol finish. It is low on my drinkability scale though due to its buttery, honey characteristics.

Bottle 355 ml
Appearance: ruby red with touch of amber , mid shaded top , vintage ivory.
Nose: deep woody with sweetness of caramel paired with oak and alcohol. Touch of Bourbon ? Great depth. 8+
Flavor/Palate : Mid full bodied. Woody , cask character , hint of Bourbon noted. Light bitterness with wet old wood feel on sides. Alcohol is well covered with some apparent warmth at finish. High quality sipper.

Had the bottle in my fridge for a good while. Poured small, smooth tan head that mostly diminished, no lacing, minimal carbonation, semi-transparent, and an orange brown hue. Aroma was of oak, caramel, vanilla, malty, sweet, alcohol, and earthy. Flavour was malty, caramel, vinuous, vanilla, and sweet. Dangerously smooth, tasty beer. Too bad I only had the one.
