This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

The bourbon barrel aging is easily apparent here; this lovely beer provides a breathtaking sweet woody aroma with mellow bourbon notes. The mouthfeel is splendid, full and creamy, gently sweet in the flavor, lingering long with dry oak and sweet vanilla, coming splendidly into its own as it approaches room temperature.

For this was perhaps the highlight of an evening filled with extraordinarily good beers. Splendid. 9/4/9/5/16=4.3

Rerate March 15, 2008: Another í06 bottle. Pours out a rather light caramel with almost no head. Woody bourbon (vanilla, not booze) dominates the aroma, some caramels coming through as well; the aroma is indeed really nice. Relatively mild sweetness, bourbon notes, lots of vanilla, butterscotch, subtle banana and other fruits. Mouthfeel seems thin today and maybe a touch too hot, woody dryness very late in the finish. The first sip was not so impressive -- certainly nowhere near the 4.3 that I gave it the first time around -- but as I progressed through the bottle I enjoyed this one well enough. Iíd go about 8/4/8/4/15, and Iíll go straight to that score as this rating was based on a full bottle and the first beer a night, whereas the previous one was one of my few ratings added from a tasting situation.

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2007 Had this on draught at the "Founders at Dilly Deli" night on 9/21/2006... Color is dark brown and kind of murky - quite intriguing in an inviting way. This beer has quite a combination of characteristics in the aroma and flavor - strong and sweet at first, then a little spicy and fruity like raisins, and then slightly dry and bitter toward the end. There are some hints of caramelized sugar, nuts, and wood in there as well. Mouthfeel is medium to full and quite smooth. A very interesting brew that has much complexity and tends to cause some pondering to sort out all the great flavors wafting around in it. I definitely need to grab up a bottle of this to try it again and explore it deeper...

10/11/2007: Founderís Curmudgeon Old Ale has a sophisticated sweet brandy-like aroma that contains deep caramelized malt, a rich cherry quality, and hints of alcohol and oak. The color is a nearly opaque deep ruby color with a subtle level of carbonation, specks of suspended sediment, and a thin beige head. The flavor is rich and very malty. The sweetness drawns one in and the complexities really capture oneís interest and attention. The fruity (mostly cherry) maltiness is accompanied by caramel, vanilla, dry oak char, and a warming brandy flavor. Some bitterness, candied citrus, and chocolate come through in the finish. The alcohol is nicely tucked away under all the other flavors. This beer has a medium-full to full body and is really quite smooth despite its thickness. This particular Old Ale definitely improves with age...

muzzlehatch (4424) - Burlington, Vermont, USA - SEP 20, 2006
12 oz bottle from Bello Vino in Ann Arbor, MI (August 2006), consumed at cellar temperature from a Unibroue glass. A faint thin tan head tops hte muddy dark brown body, laces very little....raisins, licorice, lots of oaky vanilla and a redolence of spice shop (allspice, ginger, cardamom, etc) in the complex nose....burnt caramel and espresso character in the body, sweet only at the front and tending towards ashy, dry and bitter-harsh at the finish, light hints of alcohol....as it goes down and as it warms to room temperature, some sugars return to ward off the bitter attacks, Frangelico and Amaretto sensuous liqueur notes mmmm.....low carbonation, lightly sticky mouthfeel, very full and thick.

Bottle, from Julioís. bought when first came to Mass consumed, er, today. Good nose, Malibu & coke, whisky, oak. Hazed dark orangy brown color, small head that rose up slowly and faded quickly to a ring. Ok lace. Bittersweet flavor, like aroma. Medium body, litely creamy, smooth mouthfeel, dry biting finish. Well for something that doesnít mention barrel aging it sure has bite. Certainly one for a cold winter night on the U.P.

Thin dense beige head. Light carbonation. Interesting aroma with some spruce, flowers, sweet apple cider, caramel and lavender. Strangely floral. Dark copper brown in color. Malty and thick on the palate. More floral notes with some vanilla, spruce, alcohol and caramel. Slightly pasty in the mouth. Finish is creamy and smooth with a nice alcohol kick. A pretty good old ale with some interesting flavors and aromas.

12 oz bottle. Deep amber in color with a nice off white head. Malty whiskey like aroma. Oaky vineous notes. Fruity malty sweet flavor. Finish is woody. Full bodied. Very drinkable.

12 oz bottle. Not much head but the aroma you can smell at arms reach. At first I thought the aroma is scotch but it really is whiskey, maybe too much so. Almost like itís spiked with it. The body is spot on and the flavor is just a bit too boozy. Iíll age a bottle for a decande or so and see what happens.

Beer pours murky reddish amber color with a mostly retained beige colored head. Aroma is quite rich rich oak and mild bourbon notes also a vinous aroma. Flavor is sweet with wet wood, a mellow vinous flavor and the alcohol is restrained for this ABV. Has some commonalities with one of my all time favs De Dolle Oerbier Reserva. Yummy.

bottle purchased sep. 2006. poured nice and thick,deep amber, hazy, forming avery nice cream colored head. Great lacing. Aroma of mixed fruit. mild baked apples, bourboun and apple. Malty and subtle sweetness lends way to a huge blast of bourboun charred oak and caramelly sweet malty goodness followed with a warming smooth alchohol. Awesome beer...

2006 version. Deep stained wood color with very little head or carbonation for that matter, but itís not that itís gone flat so much as itís just low carbonation. The aroma is richly malty: caramel, walnuts, carrot cake sans the icing, oak and a touch of smoke. The flavor is full-bodied with that rich maltiness avoiding being overly sweet. The taste of the char inside the barrel only comes through as a hint in the finish. Interesting, complex beer.
