COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Bottle from footbalm. Borbon notes predominate. If this werenít the BA version, I donít know that it would have much flavor. Good, but not great.

Hazy red brown with a sizzling whitish head. Tangy nose with some red wine and clear alcohol presence, touches of caramel, and some roasted malt notes. Quite sweet tasting, some nice smoky hints, a good dose of dry, nutty bitterness, and more vinous notes. A bit too effervescent, but after several years, that may dissipate, that bitterness settle down--should be very worthwhile as a cellar beer. Balance is reminiscent to me of young Hardyís.

2006 version. Dark reddish brown pour with a diminishing off white head. Aroma is very strong in bourbon with not much else. Lots of bourbon flavor throughout the taste. A lot like doing a watered down shot of whiskey. Will aging do this beer well? I hope so. I think this beer needs have other flavors come out to taste more like a beer and less like whiskey. I enjoy beers with a touch of bourbon, but to have it dominate as it has in this beer, it is out of place.

Pours a dark brownish color with hardly any head to stay around. Aroma is of coconut, chocolate, caramel, and whiskey. The aroma actually reminds me of those coconut, chocolate, graham cracker bars. Taste is fruity with intense sugary flavors, spices, and again the whiskey flavors. These beer is very lightly carbonated but it seems to tickle the nose a bit. A good brew but not a daily drinker as itís too syrupy for me. HIdes the alcohol exceptionally well though.

Beautiful, mahogany brown pour with a mid-sized tan head that dissipates leaving some nice foam on the side of the glass. Aromas are sticky sweet, but a little weak. Flavor picks up what the aroma lacks. Wonderful peppery spicing that dominates over a toffee/caramel body with some dark fruit lingering in the background. Has a bit of a syrupy feel to it (as to be expected) and finishes with a little pepper reprise that leaves a bit of a sting that goes nicely with the alcoholic warmth. Very nice.

UPDATED: OCT 28, 2011 Hazy, red color, a touch of brown with an almost nonexistent head. Very fruity, candy-like, taffy, and pina colada in the nose. A very unusual flavor profile. Coconut prevails. Tropical oil, candied sugar, alcoholic warmth, and a balancing bitterness to a nicely syrupy palate of jaggery? sugar-like flavors.

Great flavor to this one, before I even took a sip, I thought "Scotch" it smelled like a scotch, malty, had a nice scotch flavor to it, even though I think its bourbon. Peppery, warming, nice brew. Alcohol is well hidden. Thanks to Duane for this great brew.

12oz bottle f/Archer Liquors, Bottled April 3 according to the site, no date on bottle. Pours a copper brown with a medium, thick tan head. Aroma is of rum, somewhat fruity, with some burnt caramel and raisins. Taste is much the same with some vanilla with a little bitterness midway through, alcohol warming throughout. Soft carbonation, very creamy mouthfeel. Been waiting a while for this one. Very good.

Wonderful nose -- bold and vibrant, with hints of rum and fresh-cut coconut. Cloudy, deep amber. Super smooth with a milkshake-like texture; mild carb. Malts exuded with sugar water-soaked wood and vanilla, with lesser hints of caramel and powdered cocoa. Moderate bitterness. Curious background aromas of perfume, seaweed and mysterious spices. Alcohol was hidden well on the front end, but it was affectionately warming on the back end. Curiously enough, it tastes more like this beer was aged in rum barrels rather than bourbon barrels. Nevertheless, itís a nice sweet-sour addition.
