This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editorís Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

I think itís an 05í bottle, but Iíve been lazy about labeling bottles before they go into the cellar, so I donít know for sure. A very pretty beer, add a tiny bit of cloudiness and a bit more dynamic of color (I like when itís red in the middle, yellow at the edges) and maybe a bit better head retention and this would look perfect. The aroma is a bit weak in the glass, but powerful while drinking, and itís that of liquor. Whiskey, somewhere between bourbon and Irish whiskey to my limited understanding, but I like it. It makes me suspect this is an early 06 bottle that was barrel aged. And itís quite enjoyable a result with the delicious caramel, vanilla, barrely flavours over a nice thick ale maltiness. Prettymuch no hop profile. Substantial body without any syrupiness. A bit of alcohol on the finish is appropriate for the experience.

Bottle via trade with Illinismitty. Pours a moderately clear brown colow with no head or lacing to speak of. Aroma is medicinal with pineapple like sweetness notes. Flavor is sweet and full of bananas, almost has a medicinal like flavor to match the aroma. Coating and sticky/sweet on the palate. Kind of a let down for me but iíd like to try another bottle and re-rate.

Sampled at Dutch 70ís "Tasting in the Woods; Part Deux". Cloudy dark amberish brown with an off-white head. Nice aroma of wood, alcohol, caramel and butterscotch. Flavor has notes of pipe tobacco, dark caramel, lots of oaky woodiness, whiskey and butterscotch. Sweet with balancing bitterness. Alcohol present but it doesnít detract from the experience. Full, round and creamy with moderate carbonation - very silky smooth. Really nice stuff.

UPDATED: MAR 19, 2008 Bottle via trade with bgburdman9. Funny pured clear caramel color and immediatly became hazy. Aroma of toffe and caramel malts, also alcohol. The taste was thick, rich, and chewy almost doughy. Taste was the same as the aroma with warming alcohol finish. Thanks, Brian.

TITW Part Deux - Hazy caramel color, thin white fizzy head. Rich nose of buttery bourbon, chocolate chip cookie dough, oak, and toasted coconut. Flavor is much the same with interwoven notes of cookie, sweet bourbon, coconut, and oak that ends with a light hop bitterness. Medium to full bodied, light carbonation, soft bittersweet finish. Founders always seems to deliver. Great sipper....

2005 Bottle. Deep, cloudy plumb-colored pour with no head. Sweet, earthy, roasty-oak aroma. Complex flavor of dark fruits, wood, cane sugar, red wine, and honey. Sticky on the tongue with a nice finish. This is a good one.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2009 Has a sweet, oaky aroma. Tastes primarily of oak with a sweet, slight caramel taste. Very well balanced with no noticeable heat. A good beer, but in no way a session beer both due to alcohol content and the overwhelming oakiness. Re rate 11.20.09 Aroma is citrus hoppy, caramel, a bit of alcohol, and butterscotch. Taste is bittersweet caramel, explosive citrus hoppiness, with a resinous melding of the two. Not extremely complex, but very well made. Finish is sweet, hot, and a bit cloying. Very good. 848416

Pours cloudy brownish red color with very little head. Aroma is big and fruity, a deep plum with some caramal and toffee notes behind the dark/dried fruit. Taste is significantly earthier, but the fruit is there as well. Caramel, toffee notes, with some dark rye bread flavors too. Finishes fruity, then dries out immensely with a burnt breadlike taste. Lasts a long time, kind of like the Traquair beers. Thick mouthfeel, very low carbonation. Excellent.

Weird beer. I swear, it tasted like someone shoved 25 pieces of bubblegum in my mouth. The finish was a strange medicine flavor. In the end, i got a little bourbon flavor. If this is what Old Ales taste like, iíll pass. Thanks.
