COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Pours a rusty brown with a thin ring of a head. Aroma is of sweet roll dough, slight toastyness, some hops behind the malt, and some mild alcoholic fumes. Flavor is of sweet toasty bread, brown sugar, full bitterness in the middle and finish, some fruiy hops riding underneath the malty sweetness A slight burn alcoholic warmth in the back of the throat.Ful body, velvety palate with a little bit of syrupynes. Aftertaste is Sweet toasty bread with a bit if residual sweetness staying on the tongue.

Bottle, presumably 2006 vintage. Amber body, good sized creamy beige head. Earthy, musky aroma, boiled potatoes, some malt. Bitter and alcoholic flavour, dry caramel malt. Rough. Strange acerbic alcohol. Average palate. A fairly massive disappointment.

Thanks Tim. Nose is dill pickles, hoppy hoppy spice. Odd. Sweet caramel, dill, hops, bubblegum. Alcohol in an odd finish.

Sampled at the Odds and Ends Tasting on 8/16/06: Dark amber/brown color with a thin beige head that starts fizzy but calms quickly. Thin spotty lacing. Aroma of whisky, coconut and dark fruits. Rich, smooth body with pungent malt, bourbon and other spicy alcohol flavors. The finish is all coconut and whisky. Definitely different from the norm, and seems pretty raw all around. I would be curious to try an aged bottle.

Duane shared a bottle of this with a few of us. Some whiskey in the nose, some sweet malt flavor. This was not my style of beer. I haven’t warmed up to barleywines or old ales yet, so this wasn’t a favorite of mine.

The beer poured a rusty red color with little head. The aroma was sweet with toffee, vanilla and wood. There was also some dankness that made me think of cellars. Nice aroma that I like in this type of beer. The taste was toffee with some herbs and a little medicine. There was also some leather in there. A good one I woudl love to try with more age on it.

pours a light red with a small off white head. aroma of oak malt and alcohol. taste is much of the same with a stronger malt prescence. I know that was spelled wrong. damn fine beer. Kind of drunk though.

2006 bottle. Smells like whiskey, thought without a tart sour-mash smell; finishes instead with alluring vanilla notes. Light cherry-cola appearance, with minimal head and lacing. Full, viscous mouthfeel showing plenty of bourbon and maple syrup, balanced with a toasted vanilla softness. A very well-balanced oak-aged ale, which would hold up nicely against a cigar. Impressive.

Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown with a thick off white head. The aroma is of caramel, sweet fruits and a hint of bourbon. The flavor is really rich. A really warming beer. Dark fruits, a hint of wood from the aging. The alcohol is well hidden, but hits hard.

mahagony pour thick off white head nice lace. Bourbon notes toffees & buttered popcorn. Palate is light creamy well coated. Flavor is mellow to the point of non descript bourbon butter, sweet.. pretty boring.
