Commercial Description:
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

12oz bottle via trade with Acknud. This brew did not live up to its rating for me. Pours a mostly clear rusty brown with a small beige ring. Nose was faint with candied apricots with the flavor being sweet and malty.

12oz. bottle, with thanks to alexsdad06 for the great bonus. Pours a iced tea color with a thin off-white head, moderate retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet malts, dark fruits, caramel, toffee and honey. Flavor is malty, with more caramel, toffee, and candied dark fruits. Enjoyable enough, but everything just didn’t quite seem to come together as well as it could for some reason. Thanks again Brad!

12oz bottle pours deep brown with a creamy tan head. Big time malt, sweet, bread, honey and some smoke in the aroma. Very sweet body with alot of caramel and dark fruit like raisin and plums. There was also some oak and bourbon in there. Great beer.

Sweet malty and cheesy yeast aromas with some honey and fruits. Foamy tan head and rose colors. Flavors are malty and slightly bitter. Yeast is present. Some orange peel and dried fruit cheesiness. Bitter finish with some bark and woodiness in the flavors. Palate is medium rich. Solid but not syrupy. Pleasure increases as the palate acclimates.

12 oz bottle courtesy of tjthreh. Pour is cloudy orange amber, with a thin off white head, nice lacing after a quick swirl of the glass. Noticeable floaties in the glass. Aroma of dusty resin maltiness, a bit of alcohol heat. Some floral honey sweetness. Taste is resin, nutty, maltiness - a sharp twinge of alcohol to the finish. Palate is dry, medium, mouth coating, alcohol present. There really is none of the sweetness from the nose in the flavor, in fact this beer did not really taste like it smelled at all. Decent enough beer, but not too complex and a bit harsh for my liking.

12oz bottle pours a hazy orange amber with no head, but a small white collar. Aromas of heavy caramel, vanilla, honey and malts, and booze. Flavors of sweet malts up front, honey and vanilla, with a long warm finish.

Poured cloudy amber with a thin head. Malt and oak aroma. Oak and bourbon up front with notes of malt, vanillla caramel and some alcohol burn. Quite sweet.
