MoDog (910), Griffith, Indiana, USA Oct 10, 2008 Poured from a 12oz bottle and served in a snifter. This beer poured a ruddy orangish brown hue with a thin head of light tan foam that lingered for a while. A small amount of lacing was left around the glass. The aroma consisted of toasted caramel, dried orange, apricot, and some earthy/herbal charateristics. Let this one warm up and breath a bit. The flavor was made up of toasted caramel, brown sugar, dried dark fruits, citrus, and just a hint of alcohol. Not sugary sweet, but big and balanced. The mouthfeel was heavy and full-bodied. Mild carbonation. Thick and lush, but not quite sticky. A very complex but smooth brew. A great sipper for the cooler months. hombrepalo (748), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2008 12oz bottle. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is woody and malty with hints of oak and bourbon. A medium to full bodied old ale. Very smooth. Nice balance. Interesting old ale. It is a smooth blend of the sweet malt base, sharp and quick to fade bitters, and a consistent oaky and tannic overtone. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a lingering alcohol bite. Very interesting.
alexsdad06 (1056), Ohio, USA Oct 10, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy copper color with a small white head that disappears quickly. The aroma is sweet, somewhat fruity, with a caramel malt backbone. The flavor, which opens with moderately sweet chewy caramel malt, is right in line with the best Old Ales. A slight fruit presence accompanies the malt, but is overtaken in the finish by a hoppy bitterness. The balance of this beer is quite impressive. Regardless of serving temperature, this one instantly has a warming effect as it travels down your throat. Surprisingly though, the alcohol is not very noticable. Full bodied and very smooth drinking. 17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 7, 2008 [2008 Bottle 9.8%] Pours a glowing dark red tinted orange with a fine white froth on top. Spicy rich malt aroma, it really smells like bourbon. The spiciness continues in the flavor, smooth rich glassy lightly toasted caramel malt, lots of bourbon and barrel, buttery oak and a light hop bite. Covers the 10% beautifully. Medium body, buttery, with fine sizzling carbonation. ChuxBeer23 (10), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Sep 30, 2008 Interestingly rich pour that doesn’t allow any carbonation to form. It won’t even allow you to see into the glass. Malty, with a refreshingly clean and snappy finish. Butterscotch. Alcohol. Well-crafted. Awesome. HonkeyBra (1279), Lemont, Illinois, USA Sep 27, 2008 Pours a deep red with a thin off white head. Aroma is sweet, like candied apples. Some caramel and other fruits as well. THe malts profile is very flavorful and impressive. Rich, A bit of hops in the finish. Considering the alcohol, the balance is very impressive. I can barely taste any. Saving a bottle for The Dude, and he better love it. MAP (1085), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Sep 27, 2008 Hazy amber-brown color with pretty much no head, looks like unfiltered apple cider....I like that. Aroma is sweeter than I expected, caramel, fig and berries. Flavor is, in a word, warming. Lots of woody sweetness and lasting caramel flavor. The palate has a slight crispness at first, then is almost chocolaty smooth. I love old ales. The softness of them, rich flavor and all good grounded flavor. I sure do love them old ales. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Sep 27, 2008 I guess I’m one of the few that thinks this beer really sucks. It actually sucked so bad that I’m somewhat convinced it was a bad bottle.....but then again, I did buy a 4 pack and the others weren’t any better. Whatever the reason, this beer just doesn’t sit well with me. Didn’t enjoy the aroma or the flavor at all.
