raindog (558), Evansville, Indiana, USA Sep 14, 2009 Lightly chilled:Kasteel glass. Great looking dark orange/brown liquid. Small creamy, head. Very slow rising bubbles and nice, lacing. Overall earthy aroma. Caramel based aroma with wood, soil, light hops and tasteful alcohol. Texture is very soft, almost light, though this is a thick beer. Upfront caramel, wood, fruit, and soil. Before the finish is more wood, caramel, and a little alcohol on the sides of the mouth. Finish is long with light earthy hop, with strong caramel, wood, toast, and light alcohol. After opening up a bit, becomes a very well put together, mellow, but flavorful and interesting shot at the old ale style. Very Respectable Narnad (682), Wonder Lake, Illinois, USA Sep 13, 2009 Pours a deep dense hazy red-amber color. No head but a few bubbles that make a white sparse film on top of the brew. Aroma has a light floral and citrus hops character, very heavy caramel nose, a lot of rich toasted malt (Vienna or Munich) that contributes to the overall fruity and sugary profile for the brew and a very smooth light alcohol note. Flavor starts with a rich toasted malt note, light orange citrus note with it finishing with a very sweet caramel candy and toffee flavors. The feeling of the beer is very dense with a heavy sugary feeling, a moderately high fine carbonation, lots of alcohol that is hidden pretty well and a light dry finish. Nice lacing on the glass from the thin film of the beer. A great long lasting flavor and the beer as a whole is very well done and follows the style superbly. Excellent brew. Skinnyviking (4142), Copenhagen, Denmark Sep 11, 2009 Bottle. Low and quickly disappearing off-white fluffy head. Hazy red brown body. Sweet barley malt caramel fruity aroma. Heavily carbonated, high alcohol malty caramel fruity flavor with a fair amount of hops bitterness. Long bitter alcohol aftertaste. ansermadide (496), Kyle, Texas, USA Sep 10, 2009 Sample from July Beer Club Meeting. Looks bottle-conditioned. Almost like a Belgian. Aroma of anise. Flavor is anise as well... or licorice. Odd, neat flavor! Easy going down. I love it. LOVE IT! Also has a slight pit fruit flavor. Founders rocks. Enough said... areyouinning (72), North Carolina, USA Sep 8, 2009 Cloudy with the appearance of a red tinted cider, and very little carbonation or head. Slow foamy legs, high viscosity. Aroma similar to apple cider with cinnamon. Very smooth mouthfeel, with excellent aftertaste. Alcohol nicely disguised. Note of cloves in aroma and taste. Bestemt drikbar men alt for endimensionel. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 4, 2009 12 oz. bottle - pours brown-amber with slight off-white head; stale, mild sugar aromas; lemons and candy canes; body is clear and thin, almost juice-like; flat and syrupy; flavors of belgian candy sugars; musky, oak and fruity; smooth going down and could see being better fresh; a little thin for my liking corby112 (677), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 4, 2009
Pours a murky dark chestnut brown color with a slightly yellowish jaundiced looking hues with a thin beige head that quickly disappears leaving no lacing.
Very earthy, swampy aroma with a little bit of creek water and old boot. Slight chocolate maltiness with subtle hops and a sweet alcohol presence which is very strong.
Again, the flavor is very earthy and leathery with a strong sweet alcohol presence, leathery maltiness, subtle hops, slight chocolate, brown sugar and dirt. There’s also a strange vegetable presence with is quite unpleasant and a dirty bitter finish.
This was quite a disappointment for me especially since I love pretty much everything from Founders and enjoy the occasional old ale. I will have to revisit again in the future.
