This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

12 oz bottle, Andersons. Red-copper pour, diminutive tan head dissipates into nothing and cannot be easily revived. Aroma is weaker than expected; peppery spicy, wood, brown sugar candy, booze. Flavor really heavy on the malt; oak is more evident here; light vanilla and caramel; blatant alcohol warmth but no astringency and probably could pass for a lesser 7% beer. Nothing here blows me away but this is well done.

Poured a very clear dark amber color with a minimal head. Aroma of fruit and bourbon with some coconut and vanilla notes. Kind of smelled like a pina colada at first. Light tartness in the aroma. The flavor led to more coconut, bourbon and malt. Light alcohol with a nice warming sensation. It was more like drinking a coctail than a beer but it wasn’t bad because of that. Medium to full bodied

Pours a decent bubbly head, with an amber, rubinred color. Aromas of caramel malts with a lot of toffee and a small raisin infusion, while cane sugar and molasse build the foundation with hints of vanilla and rum on top. Begins sweet, with bready hints, which get swallowed by even sweeter sugar and molasse. These stay in balance with wooden, leathery, heavy malts, wrapped up by a slick bitterness. Has an oily, spicy maltiness to it, with vanilla and cream underneath, which defines the character of this brew. It is still pretty sweet on the palate, but without loosing its balance, as it finishes with a gentle, hoppy bitterness of matured hops and oaky hints. The alcohol gets perfectly hidden by the sweet malts, creating a smooth mouthfeel with a slick finish, while being medium-bodied.

Bottle pour amber copper. Nose toffee, molasses, and slightly boozy. Taste similar to the nose, sweet malt, and some alcohol. Mid palate light bitter and hint of tannin. Finish revisits the toffee.

Bärnstensfärgad med litet ljust skum. Doftar grönsaker och spritigt.. Smakar bättre med maltig dominans men väldigt söt och lite alkohol.

An explosion of grape upon first taste. I prefer this flavor to the raisin that is commonly found in these types of beer. The fruit tastes more alive. Strong caramel nose with secondary licorice Boozuness is obvious and not recessed. Very sweet though with almost no bitterness. You can tell it s not a barley wine because the hop flavor doesn’t really exist much here. I like that about it though. Malt purity
