This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

12 oz bottle, Andersons. Red-copper pour, diminutive tan head dissipates into nothing and cannot be easily revived. Aroma is weaker than expected; peppery spicy, wood, brown sugar candy, booze. Flavor really heavy on the malt; oak is more evident here; light vanilla and caramel; blatant alcohol warmth but no astringency and probably could pass for a lesser 7% beer. Nothing here blows me away but this is well done.

Mahogany with fast-fading, coarse, off-white head. Fades to placid surface. Aroma is sweet wood, french toast with maple syrup, bit of blueberry. Flavor is caramel, some medicinal aftertaste (rather light) resulting in a short, unique bitterness. Yummy. A neat old ale. Some wood, but not too much vanilla in there. Body is medium-heavy, light-medium carbonation, moderate sized bubbles, yet some burn, oily/lightly creamy mouth feel.

Draft at Bricks. Pours clear copper with very little head. Nose is caramel and some whiskey. Taste starts with some caramel sweetness and fades into whiskey. Kind of watery mouthfeel but you can taste all 9.8%.

Bottle. A month to go until BB runs out. A bit hazy copper body with a medium head. Aroma has whiskey and some vanilla. This is very nice. Taste has smooth whiskey with interesting malts. Finish is sugary and very smooth, and at times feels too light. However, the alcohol is not very well covered in this light finish. A bit more complex than the two Bastards I tried before but still lacks roast/bitterness and flavour intensity to support all the booze.

Bottle from Pothole in Tallinn (€ 4,60 I think). Pours a beautiful translucent, somewhat cloudy, coppery orange with a small light beige head, leaving some lacing and sticking around the edge. Nose... beeeaaaautiful, makes me twitch in excitement. It’s got a strong whiskey-like oaky and peaty character combined with "raw" caramel, but also more delicate sweet aspects like vanilla, and tart red berries, indistinct spicy hops and some warmth coming from the alcohol. I honestly would just like to sniff this the whole night and then not show up at work tomorrow. Taste... equally mesmerising... Sweet like some plum wine, dark dried fruits there definitely, caramel too, raisins, alcohol, but also grainy malts in the background. Good bitterness giving it an extra kick.

Body relatively light, palate smooth and slippery, maybe even too much so for 10% - makes it kinda dangerous I think. Carbonation modest. Finishes with intense resinous bitterness amplified by alcohol, and somewhat balanced out by its raisiny sweetness.

I love such stuff. A bit less complex though than for example Ola Dubh 16, but still terribly enjoyable.

Very mellow and drinkable for the style and high alcohol. Amber pour. Notes of honey and maple.

Copper, small beige head. Nose is fruity, lots of caramel, malt, spice, hop tones. Flavor is malt, caramel, sweet-fruity hints, hoppy bitterness and alcohol notes in the finish. Lingering caramel and hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel, slightly oily. Nice.

Very tasty, malty ale. Pours out a murky, orange copper color with spare head. Malty, musty, woody aroma, fall leaves and decay. Taste is some sweetish malt, a hint of alcohol, maple syrup, toffee, caramels. Very delicious and very easy to drink. Gone before you know it....

Sample at The Answer The Old Ale poured a clear golden brown color with smallish head. There is some limited lacing. You detect sweet caramel malts and citrus. Your flavors are similar to the aromas. Hop bitterness builds into the finish for a clean, tidy swallow. This is my first Old Ale. The very smooth ale was well-balanced which hides the 9.8 % ABV very well.

Pours a reddish brown, with a fine, foamy, white head that dissipate to film in 2-3 minutes. Nose is malt and caramel with some floral hop hints. Taste is mildly bitter. Full bodied richness; lively carbonation. Very nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
