COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This Old Ale conjures up thoughts of classic sea fairing ports, there local pubs and the weathered fisherman that frequent them. In traditional style Curmudgeon is brewed with an intense focus on the malt bill creating a very strong, rich, malty characteristic and a sweetness indicative of its cousin the barleywine. We are especially proud of the balance in this beer making it deceptively smooth and drinkable at 9.8% alcohol by volume.
Editor’s Note - The 2006 bottled version has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Draft to glass at the Vintner. Beautiful transparent pour with a nice red hue. Mild head with great lacing. Smells like a dry barelywine. Tastes of yeast, dates, and molasses.

1/3 pint, keg. Pours medium dark brick red amber and very opaque, turning brown within. Perfect white tan head subsiding average slow. Scent is herbs, maybe oregano. Cumin and cinnamon both. Gingerbread scent - ginger? Old ale. Taste is very dense bourbon cask with a surprising fire on the way down considering the lack of ethanol taste, in spite of high ABV. Very intense. Finish is whiskey. Impressive. Great.

0.355 l bottle from ’P&M Getränke’, best before October 2016 (according to the import label which does not allow me to read anything from the original back label). Clear, deep reddish amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish, malty and a bit boozy aroma of caramel, molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, honey, candied fruits and some plasticine. Very sweet, malty and a little alcoholic taste of lots of toffee, molasses, brown sugar, some honey, a touch of vanilla and some plasticine, followed by a medium long, slightly bitter, a little alcoholic finish. Full body, sticky and oily mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Heavy stuff, not that easy to drink, not completely round as wel. Still nice, but expected something more sophisticated.

Här var de alkohol! Det märks att det är nästan 10% i denna. I övrigt en rund och en aning söt smak. Fint brun med hyfsat skum.

This ale has it nailed. Aroma of sweet caramel. Just enough hops to balance the rich molasses flavor. Mouth feel is big, rich and smooth. The best in class.

Hazy amber color. Aroma has yeast, spice and some hops. Dominated by a malty taste, it has a nice layer of sweet caramel and a slight bitter hoppy finish. Well balanced.

What a beautiful aged ale!, dark golden color, with light brown head, showcasing the sensational malts, and the molasses been used to brew this amazing beer, the aromas of sweet malts, with elegant hits of oak, and spices from the barrel aging, taste of lightly roasted malts, and the taste of the barrel aging is breath taking, the texture is full bodied , and very creamy, smooth and very easy to drink.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass. Aroma is mild bread, caramel. Appearance is mainly clear light brown with some large dark sediment floaters, huge sparkle, finger-width creamy beige head with poor retention and decent lacing. Taste is mellow sweet caramel and bread with perfect amount of oak to complement the flavors and take it to a whole new level. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with creamy texture and nice smooth finish. Overall, an understated aroma and unfortunate dark floaters but taste and mouthfeel really shine. Founders knows oak.

Bottle from Systembolaget. The nose is soy, smoke and coffee, made me think of sushi. It pours very dark with a dirty, two finger head. Tastes sweet, molasses, coffee, chocolate, red wine and raisins. Great after-dinner-drink. I actually drank it in bed as my girlfriend had some wine. A bit too sweet at first but develops into something awesome. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, CA. Aroma is sweet caramel, light molasses. Taste is caramel with light oak...gets a little wimpy on the end but overall delightful.

Bottle. Hazy dark amber with large foamy light beige head, oak aroma with a bit of caramel, medium carbonation, woodsy caramel taste, lightly sweet with alcohol undertones, thickish smooth body, long bitter woodsy finish with alcohol aftertaste. Strong and interesting.
